Might be worth mentioning that OOo doesn't have an Outlook equivalent, as
Outlook is an important part of MS Office for many people, but that there are
good equivalents, such as Mozilla Thunderbird and the diary addon.

Re: [users] Open office/ms Office

2010-01-17 Thread Harold Hauge
I'm still learning OpenOffice.org but the following helped me get started.
Use wikipedia as a start.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org

If you need some lessons to follow:
The book, A Conceptual Guide to OpenOffice.org 3 (and download the lessons)
is worth a look.

Download some of the manuals as PDF files.
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/
While you can view these with your browser I prefer to download (free)
copies. They are good for looking stuff up while using the program. I also
found that $20 for a printed guilde was worth it.

Solveig Haugland's book, OpenOffice.org 2 Guidebook, (you can order the book
from the author). I found the book easier to read that the guides and has
lots of screen shots. Check out here blog for examples.
http://openoffice.blogs.com/openoffice/

If you use Macros, and you should, I found "OpenOffice.org Macros Explained"
by Andrew Pitonyak to be very helpful. If you buy the book you can download
a PFD version plus chapters with working macros.

The main reason for me to learn OpenOffice is to convert some of my MS
Access applications to Base. However, Base is not as easy to learn as the
others (Write, Calc, etc). If you have some backgound in SQL and Basic
programming then "Database Programming" OpenOffice.org Base & Basic by
Roberto Benietiz will be helpful.
I am still learning how to program Base but I have converted one of my
Access applications.

I have made one of my computers a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system. I have
found Ubuntu to be very user friendly so one day I may leave M$ for good.

Is it really free?

Yes.

Does it compare to MS Office.

Yes. In some areas it's even superior (e.g. it has a standalone vector
drawing progam, Draw, which MS Office lacks, AFAIKT), but in some other
areas it's still behind (e.g. Base is not as powerful nor easy to use
like Access, IMHO).

Can they both be run on the same computer?

Yes, and the good part is it's platform independent. This means that if
you fire up a Linux live cd or even install it on your PC, you'll find
the same OpenOffice you have on Windows (differences between versions
are negligible if numbers are not too different).

Will it run on Windows 7?

Haven't tried myself but a quick search on google brought me to the
conclusion that some (solvable) issues can show up due to the "improved"
separation between user and administrator roles in windows 7.

Anything else you can share will be helpful. Thanks, Jim

Some points that come to mind right now:

- OOo document format is an ISO standard (ODF)
- ODF files are just zip archives, where text, binary data and format
metadata are clearly separated, thus you can get to your textual
information even with just 7zip and Notepad
- no license costs: download it for free, install it wherever you want,
any times you want. Legally.
- platform-independent: runs on almost any Windows version (starting
with Win2000, I belive), Macintosh, Linux (preinstalled on almost all
distros), etc.
- OOo itself can't go out of business; also, no company can forbid
access to previous versions of the OOo suite

- a new OOo release doesn't force you to upgrade
- doesn't pollute the system as MS Office does (IMHO, of course)
- etc.

Calc, Writer, and Impress can all read and write the corresponding

proprietary formats Microsoft uses. Access files can't be used
transparently, though, the underlying structures are too different. Base
can connect to such databases, and the tables can be seen and to some
extent used. But other things (queries, forms, reports) are not
available. Other files, like those from Publisher, are not readable. So
... it depends on what people are sending.

Writer is like Word

Base is like Access

Impress is like Power Point

OpenOffice has a commercial sister, StarOffice by Sun. Unless you are
wanting an enterprise version or use an Asian language, I don't think you
would notice any difference between the two. My understanding is that any
extras packaged with StarOffice are available as free downloads. Many
Microsoft templates work just fine with OO.

I would like to suggest a great site:
http://openoffice.blogs.com/openoffice/ There are also many others.

For Outlook many people use Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora (which are being
combined into one program at some future date). Also, many people use
Mozilla Firefox for a browser.

I use Base to manage my client files. If you are referring to a software to
manage the files on your computer, I think there are several open source
options available, but perhaps someone else can provide that information.

Good luck, it's a great office suite!

Yes, yes, yes and so on.
Well, it's free. Just download it (from http://www.openoffice.org/),
install it and see for yourself.
It's free as in ”gratis” and it's free as in ”freedom of speech”. You
can install it on how many computers as you like. In fact, the more
the better. You can contribute with code (the source code is
available, of course), ideas and bug reports if you like. In fact
quite a few of my bug reports through the years has resulted in
changes, so it seems like the developers are at least listening a
little bit.

Just remember that OpenOffice.org is NOT MS Office and doesn't want to
be (why would it? MS Office already exists…), so some things are done
differently. OpenOffice.org is more Style oriented, so learning how to
manage styles will pay off and save you quite a lot of time in the
future, if you use it properly. You don't have to use styles, but it
makes things easier once you learned working the OpenOffice.org way
with styles…

I get the following message
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is

folder containing the installation package openofficeorg31.msi in
the box below. I am unable to find that file. I have deleted all
files containing OOo, but Open Office still shows up in the program
files but will not delete. I even tried uninstalling Network Magic
but that didn't help.
I am able to use a jump drive with the portable version of OO but I
would prefer to have it on the computer itself. I had no problem
with the upgrade on my desktop which is running XP.

Other error messages I get when trying to dl OO are:
The installed product does not match the installation source. Until
a matching source is provided or the installed product and source
are synchronized, this action can not be performed.

It's a fact about Windows that it needs the .msi file in order to
install *or (properly) remove* a product. Some applications (e.g.
Microsoft Office) salt away a hidden copy of the .msi file so that it
is available when you wish to remove the product. OpenOffice appears
not to do this. In any case, Windows remembers where the .msi file
was when installation took place and looks there to find it when you
ask it to remove the product. If it cannot find the .msi file, it
asks you to point it to where it is now available. In your case, it
appears that the drive or folder is no longer available: it may be a
shared network drive that is no longer connected, or an external hard
disk, or perhaps just a optical drive in which you no longer have the
original CD.

There should be an easy solution. If you kept the 3.1 download, run
it again to unpack it (no need to continue with the
installation). You will find the .msi file amongst the unpacked
files. Now remove the product in the normal way, browsing to the
.msi file when challenged for it. If necessary, download the
installation file again from the web site to do this - but take care
that it is exactly the same version that you download. You may still
have problems if you have been deleting files manually, as it
appears. If all else fails, run the installation process again to
create a clean installation and then perform the removal.

Incidentally, don't let anyone tell you - as sometimes happens - that
once you have installed OpenOffice you can safely delete the
installation files. You need this .msi file if you ever need to
repair or reinstall OpenOffice. You also need it if you upgrade
OpenOffice, since this process often involves removing a previous
version. The safe way to work is to unpack the installation file
somewhere it can live permanently - either out of sight on your local
drive or perhaps on a CD or external drive. If the installation file
unpacks to the desktop, move the resulting files elsewhere
immediately. Only then attempt the installation. Windows will then
remember where the .msi file is and was, and you will not see
problems later. If you saved these files to an external device, e.g.
a CD, you merely need to reinsert or reattach it when you need to
remove the product (or when challenged).

But you don't want to remove 3.1, do you? You want to install it
properly. I cannot guess what is happening here from what you say; I
hope someone else can. ("It wouldn't run" is a little vague.) Is
the problem connected to removing or replacing version 2.4 when it
was installed under a different operating system (Vista instead of
7)? I don't know. Have you tried removing version 2.4 separately first?

There also exists a brute-force technique for removing recalcitrant
Windows applications: use this as a last resort. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en and download and run the
Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Select either or both of the
OpenOffice versions you have from the list it displays and see what
it will do. Then install 3.1 again.

I trust this helps.

Probably a mis-configuration of your Linux version (missing dictionary, language
not set...)

Please get help on the users@openoffice.org
support mailing list.

Also please always use a current version (3.1 is too old) when reporting here.

[users] unable to uninstall OO

2010-01-17 Thread Audrey Bucher
I was using 2.4 on my laptop and it was working well. I heard about the
update to 3.1 and dl'd it. It wouldn't run. I had just upgraded from
Vista to Windows 7. I tried to uninstall 3.1 but am unable to do so.

I get the following message
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a
folder containing the installation package openofficeorg31.msi in the
box below. I am unable to find that file. I have deleted all files
containing OOo, but Open Office still shows up in the program files but
will not delete. I even tried uninstalling Network Magic but that didn't
help.
I am able to use a jump drive with the portable version of OO but I
would prefer to have it on the computer itself. I had no problem with
the upgrade on my desktop which is running XP.

Other error messages I get when trying to dl OO are:
The installed product does not match the installation source. Until a
matching source is provided or the installed product and source are
synchronized, this action can not be performed.

FWIW, I still have a copy of "Footprint Works" (which later became IBM
Works in OS/2 Warp 3 & 4). ;-)

Re: [users] writer: margin trouble when numbering

2010-01-17 Thread Cor Nouws

Hi Guy,

Guy Voets wrote (12-01-10 19:08)

Let me explain: I create a page style with 0 margins all around and a

background colour. Result is a page with colour all over, no
colourless border.
I then create a paragragh style with indents of 1cm to emulate the
suppressed margins.

All went well until I wanted a numbered list. I can't impose the list
to respect the right indent. The text in the numbered paragraphs
continues till the border of the paper.
The only way I found to solve this, was adding to the page style a
distance of 1cm to the content (under borders tab).

Is there a more elegant solution?

I am not sure if there is a elegant way at the moment.
I noticed the same behaviour, but still have to find out...

Cor

Hi,

Just wish to share my experience so far on this version. Very stable,
hardly crash in Fedora 12. but the performance is not very good, quite
slow.

Warmest regards,
