Not sure when OSX would accept a standard OOo install but I think 10.4+

That's good - since they are the same! The file formats are identical, the
different extensions merely indicating what you want to happen when the file
is opened. Documents with the .ppt extension open in Powerpoint as if for
further editing; those with the .pps extension display as a slide show,
which is neater when you are delivering the presentation. The option to save
as .pps is not present in my version 3.1.1 of OpenOffice, so I'm guessing it
must be new in version 3.2; in any case, you can simply rename these files to
 change the extension as needed.

 I trust this helps.

U I tend to save files in directories for projects or clients or the like

A suggestion if you are using Windows, find and install the free version of
PowerDesk. It's a file manager that WinExplorer is starting to catch up with
but that is a side issue. There is a mini program called pdhelper (some
versions a .dll and others a .exe) which helps navigate when opening saving
files. It adds 2 icons to the top bar of the open (or save as) dialogue box
where it 'keeps track' of opened files and folders.

Eg to open a file you have used in OOo before, click open and click the 'new'
file icon and you get a list of files you have used. Similarly, if you want to
open a file in a folder that you use often, click open|folder icon and get a
list of folders. Sadly it doesn't (or didn't last time I tried) work with MS
apps - MS in their wisdom disable its function somehow.

It's one of the utilities that I miss since moving away form windows.

I guess the big difference is that these are all individual programs designed
to work independently. (Yes I know MSWord is presented as part of a package,
but check where the files appear on your task bar or equivalent. When I open
MSWord MS Exell at work the files appear separately. In OOo they are all
together.) OOo is a program that allows different formats of file - text,
spreadsheet, slide show etc

[users] Top posting should be allowed

2010-02-11 Thread Keith R Bainbridge
Good afternoon all, particularly the moderators

I have been criticised a few times for top posting on this list. I haven't
participated much since the last critic.

I started work in 1963. I was told that I just missed out using nibs that you
dip into an ink well.

My first recollections of keeping records were handwritten notes on plain
paper. I progressed to typing and then computerised records. Back to the paper
- we wrote down the page (of course). However the pages were filed latest on
top. The idea being that when I opened a file I wanted to see the most recent
notes to remind me what had happened recently. When I needed to know more
history I opened the older pages.

When I moved to computerised record keeping this principle has proven better
than the concept of scrolling to the bottom of the 'page' to see what happened
in my last discussion. I am not alone in this thinking. Some data managers
built specially for my work follow this principle.

Which leads me to why some dislike top posting. If I am following a long
thread the last thing I want to do is page down over the information I have
read before. I want to simply read the new bit that some kind person has added.
(If I need a reminder of what has gone before, I simply scroll. But if I am
interested in the thread this rarely happens.) If a thread becomes complex,
answers should be inserted where they are relevant.

Surely if I thank somebody for their help, they are entitled to see my thanks
quickly.

I suspect this will start a flame or two, but I am passionate about this.

Comments please.
