 OpenOffice.org is freely available to everyone. You do not need to 
contact anyone to get permission to download and install it. Enjoy!
  There is one thing to remember though. Version 1.1.3 and 2.0 use 
slightly different file formats. (*.sxw for 1.1.3, and *.odt for 2.0) 
However, any text document you created using 2.0 can be saved in either 
the *.sxw or *.odt formats.
  One last point: you might want to suggest to the college that a new 
version of OOo is available.

You can download your own copy free, also download the Installation guide, 
getting 
started then whatever other guides.  All this information plus something about 
a 
download manager if on dialup is at the openoffice.org web site.
