[users] How To Open Microsoft Works Database (.wdb) File
Greetings, We are a new user of OpenOffice. For a many years now we have been using Microsoft Works to create our word-processing, spreadsheet and database files. We are sure it will take us sometime to acquaint ourselves with OpenOffice, we have started using the word-processing and spreadsheet areas. We have had no problem converting/opening our Microsoft Works word-processing and spreadsheet files to OpenOffice. The OpenOffice Base is very unfamiliar to us. We have tried many times and are unable to convert/open our Microsoft Works database files (Microsoft Works Database (.wdb)) to the OpenOffice Base. To date we have not been successful at doing so. If it is possible to convert/open our Microsoft Works database files (Microsoft Works Database (.wdb)), could you describe the procedure to do it? But you can access the data in your existing database files. Go back to your copy of Microsoft Works, open the databases in that, and save copies in dBase (*.dbf) format. (Works will do this.) Then create a new Base database, in the first panel of the Database Wizard select Connect to an existing database, scroll down to dBASE, and browse to your database copy. Your new Base database will be able to access the data from your old database. Alternatively, save the data from Works as Text Commas (*.csv). You can then either connect to this document from Base or else open the .csv file in Calc and then copy and paste the data into the Tables panel of Base, creating a new table in the process. I trust this helps. Brian Barker - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OpenOffice.org Base does not support the .wdb file format. To work the data contained within those files you must export the data, just open each and select save as, to a CSV, TXT or dBase IV file format, from within Works, first. Dbase is the best choice, IMO, and files will be named .dbf When you start Base then, select 'Connect to existing databse and in the drop down for type select dBase. On the next page select the directory where you saved the .dbf files and finish up. When the Base file is opened the files will each be listed as a separate table. NOTE - at this point the data is NOT in a native Base relational database, but simple dBase flat files. If you want to take the process to the next step and import these to a relational database that can be done also. The best thing would be to get the files to this stage first, then let the list know you are ready and one of us can help you with the last step. ( for that matter you might want to look at why you might want to do that, it may be that there is no benefit to it actually and leaving the data as is, is the better choice - again just ask on the list here ) Drew -- OpenOffice.org User Community Forum: http://user.services.openoffice.org United States PostgreSQL Association: http://www.postgresql.us/ - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
