[users] Open office as default

2011-11-01 Thread Yvonne Sinnott

Hi,
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate and would like to have Open Office as default. I
want photos, etc to automatically open with 'office' as opposed to Windows.

Can this be done and if yes, how?

It was easy with XP.

Thanks, Yvonnne

[users] Open Office as default to open .doc files

2008-10-20 Thread Bob Burton

Dear Users,

I want Open Office 3.0 to be my default programme to open Power Point
and Microsoft .doc files. In 2.4 on installation you had the choice
of making it the default programme (program!). No such option with
version 3.0 The result is when I double click on a .doc e-mail
attachment, instead of opening it with Open Office, it brings up a
message with the file path of the attachment then invalid menu handle.

I can open Open Office Writer and then trace the file path through to
the attachment, and then open it, but is there a way of organising
Open Office 3.0 so that it is, as was version 2.4, the automatic
default program to open such files?

You can select the default application for various file types, by
following these instructions. You'll choose OpenOffice as the default app.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With Choose Program...
Check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file and
choose the desired application.
If that method is not available, follow the directions listed here:

Bob, does your e-mail client have its own path information for opening
attachments? If so, it may be trying to get to your old OOo. What
happens when you double-click on a .doc file from Windows Explorer?

Thank you, James. Your first option worked. Thanks also to Barbara

A PDF file is not HTML. You need to download and install something like Acrobat
Reader.

RE: [users] open office as default html

2007-09-22 Thread sales
.pdf files are not .html files... You need to download a .pdf reader from
one of the reader designers like http://adobe.reader-downloads.org/us/

That will let you open a .pdf and print it. If you want to edit it
directly, you'll need something like Adobe Acrobat which allows you to
create and edit .pdf's.

Think of a .pdf as an envelope you ship other files in...not like a
programming or display language as is HTML.

Good luck!

Neither OpenOffice nor Wordpad should be reading PDF files, though
OpenOffice can create them. Do you have Adobe reader installed? It's a
free download. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html .

I suspect you mean default application. When you right click on a Word
document, what is the first application listed? If it's not OpenOffice
or Writer, the file association has not been set. If it has been set,
then there's some other problem, that requires further investigation.

I'm not quite sure what's happening. It seems you may have more than
one problem. When you start OpenOffice, without clicking on a file,
does it still ask you for a language?

Thanks, James. I opened OO and clicked on a text document and everything was
fine It didn't ask for a language). I also redownloaded Adobe but it couldn't
complete the download because it said one of the files are corrupt. Here's
another weird thing: When I open files that I saved from when I had OO
before, they are fine, but anything new I try to download or open is
gibberish and opens in Word Pad.

What files are you downloading that causes this problem?
Also, as I mention, you may have some problems with your system, that
are causing so many problems. I couldn't say what though.

[users] Open Office as default writer

2007-09-02 Thread Julie James

Dear OO colleagues.
I have recently installed OpenOffice v. 2.2.1under Windows XP v.5.1
with latest updates. I use MS Office extensively and have much WIP.
While I intend to progressively migrate all relevant applications to
OpenOfiice, I do not (just yet) want it to be my default writer. I need
time to replicate custom styles in OO. How do I override OO as default
for opening all files in *.doc. format? I cannot find any such option
via the Writer options menu. Do I need to reinstal and if so how do I
control the defaults?

Cheers,
Julie

Open Windows Explorer find a .doc file right click openwith select Word
make sure the check box to always open with this app is checked.

That is controlled by file associations and they're easy to change.
