[Users] Native GlusterFs Storage domain and prereqs

2013-09-16 Thread Sven Knohsalla
Hi,

I'm very interested in using libgfapi to get rid of the FUSE overhead, as read
here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/GlusterFS_Storage_Domain

The pre-reqs for HVs are:

- libvirt version 1.0.1

- qemu version 1.3

Currently I just can find these packages for fc19, I'm running FC18 based nodes
with older packages (productive, not testing).
So, am I right in this position I need to migrate to fc19 based hosts for this
functionality?

I'm running an oVirt Engine with version 3.2.1-1.fc18, here I don't have the
option to choose GlusterFS_Domain, just POSIXFS.
Which version do I need here ?

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Sven.

Thanks a lot for your answer and sorry for my late response - I was sick
leaving last week.

>
> - Would you share the output of your `brctl show`?

# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
;vdsmdummy; 8000. no
dmz 8000.0025901ad140 no eth0.200
ovirtmgmt 8000.0025901ad140 no eth0.100
vnet1
vnet2
setup 8000.0025901ad140 no eth0.500
test2 8000.0025901ad140 no eth0.602
vnet0

vnet1 is a Debian 7 vm which has a perfectly working network.
vnet2 is the Solaris 11 vm which can't communicate over the network.

> - Particulalry, does the host device with 10.0.100.42 sit on the same
> bridge as your Solaris VM?

10.0.100.42 is the ip of the oVirt host and it's ip is configured on
this bridge (and reachable from the Debian 7 vm):

# ip a | grep ovirt
5: ovirtmgmt: mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue
state UNKNOWN
inet 10.0.100.42/24 brd 10.0.100.255 scope global ovirtmgmt

> - Do you see the who-has packet when sniffing the bridge device?

Yes, I can see them:
12:24:16.311218 ARP, Request who-has 10.0.100.42 (Broadcast) tell
10.0.100.123, length 46
12:24:16.311246 ARP, Reply 10.0.100.42 is-at 00:25:90:1a:d1:40, length
28

I can also see the MAC of the Solaris vm in arp cache of oVirt host:
# arp -an
? (10.0.100.123) at 00:99:4a:00:64:83 [ether] on ovirtmgmt

But I can't see the MAC address of oVirt host (10.0.100.42) in arp table
of the Solaris 11 vm. To be more clear: I can't see any MAC address in
ARP table of Solaris vm except the MAC of the vm itself.

> - Have yout tried guest-to-guest communication (over the same bridge)?

I can communicate from the Debian 7 vm to all hosts in my network, but I
can't reach the Solaris 11 vm.
The network of the oVirt setup is workin

Thanks a lot for the information!
It's great to know that this is/will be available.

Great work - thanks a lot for the Debian and Ubuntu packages!

Just one little thing:
Can you add python-apt to the dependency list (it's missing in the
Debian Wheezy package - didn't test the Ubuntu packages but maybe it's
missing there, too)?

If python-apt isn't installed it's not possible to fetch installed
packages:

MainThread::INFO::2013-09-16
15:23:22,977::ovirt-guest-agent::37::root::Starting oVirt guest agent
MainThread::INFO::2013-09-16
15:23:23,015::GuestAgentLinux2::101::root::Unknown package management.
Application list report is disable

GuestAgentLinux2.py requires this python module to get the package
information.

All other features like system shutdown, nic information, memory,... are
working fine.

Regards,
René

Re: [Users] Resize VM disk

2013-09-16 Thread Eduardo Ramos

Hi friends!

I thought resize my VM with
http://centoshelp.org/resources/post-install-options/shrink-a-default-install-lvm-pv-to-create-another-partition/
and after use lvresize on SPM, in order to shrink VM disk volume.

What do you think?

In oVirt 3.3 you can do it by clicking on VM, select Disk tab on the
bottom, select disk, click edit and add GB in extend array. ;-)

thanks.
Uhm, not so easy. It seems it wants to downgrade to 0.10.2.2-3 (why?)
and not 0.10.2.6 and vdsm complains about that
Where to eventually find intermediate updates? I only found latest
ones (so the broken ones...) on mirrors?

That was a typo on my part while writing the email NM_CONTROLLED=no is
what appears in ifcfg-ovirtmgmt

I tested your ovirt-guest-agent PPA which you provided and it works on

Would you be so kind and provide even Debian packages on your PPA? :-)
I dont know if sysvinit style file for launching daemon is included by

Two good news.

Developers fixed the bug in latest master, so I updated the
ovirt-guest-agent package for Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring) to 1.0.8. This
package should be OK to use with 12.04 (Precise) as well.

I also wrote a Debian specific SysV init script for the guest agent.I
tested in my Debian Wheezy guest. There is a small problem,
luanchpad.net does not support hosting Debian packages, and for each
package per Ubuntu release, it hosts the latest version. So I upload the
Debian specific oVirt guest agent package as a Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)
package.

You can dowanlod them from the following link.
https://launchpad.net/~zhshzhou/+archive/vdsm-ubuntu/+packages

In all, the ovirt-guest-agent-1.0.8 (Raring) package is for both Ubuntu
Raring and Precise. The ovirt-guest-agent-1.0.8 (Precise) is for Debian.

Dear Zhou Zheng Shen,

thank you for creating Ubuntu and Debian packages! I owe you a beer :-)

Thanks again.

Good point - here's the command line of Sol11 with virt-manager on this

I'm using f19 for engine enabling beta repo, that today provided

BTW: nice to see some more languages; how can I help to have Italian put in...?

Could it be that the
-cpu Nehalem

in some way can influence the problem? It only appears in oVirt

Hi,

I'm very interested in using libgfapi to get rid of the FUSE
overhead, as read here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/GlusterFS_Storage_Domain

The pre-reqs for HVs are:

- libvirt version 1.0.1

- qemu version 1.3

Currently I just can find these packages for fc19, I'm running
FC18 based nodes with older packages (productive, not testing). So,
am I right in this position I need to migrate to fc19 based hosts
for this functionality?

No, you can add the virt-preview repo which should get you the f18
packages. Sorry don't have the URL handy right now. If you can't find
let know and I'll post it.

Yes, virt-preview would work with f18, but that feature is only
available in the 3.3 release (coming very soon). 3.3 will run on Fedora
19 hosts.

I'm running an oVirt Engine with version 3.2.1-1.fc18, here I
don't have the option to choose GlusterFS_Domain, just POSIXFS.
Which version do I need here ?

3.2 doesn't know about libgfapi, you'll need to do the lowlevel
gluster stuff yourself, I think.

Right, for 3.2, you need to use POSIXFS for gluster. native gluster
domains are added in 3.3.

I am not sure either, but just in case - it would be great if you can check
from a different machine, maybe use VNC for remote access rather than xrdp
(ideally, of course, it would be great if you can work directly with your
CentOS 6.4 machine, rather than connect to it remotely via a different machine)

No, you can add the virt-preview repo which should get you the f18 packages.
Sorry don't have the URL handy right now. If you can't find let know and I'll
post it.

3.2 doesn't know about libgfapi, you'll need to do the lowlevel gluster stuff
yourself, I think.

My resolution is 1280x768.
Indeed only when the browser window is quite full screnne I'm able to
see the window correctly.
See here a screenshot with the minimum width I have to put to get clean view...
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvTWJJSUU3Um9DUTQ/edit?usp=sharing

perhaps too much? Only an impression.
The newbye could think it is a problem with the application and
the first sight a user gets is quite important
It could be fine to put something inside the welcome window related to
both minimum resolution and better usability in full screen mode...
Just my opinion

Thank you for your feedback, Gianluca. we are aware of the issue - we already
have several BZs that document the problematic layout of the application in
low resolutions, and we are planning to solve it.

firefox-17.0.8-1.el6.centos.x86_64
I'm using default set after installing firefox, that I see is UTF-8
and auto-detect is put to off
see here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvcHoteVNIb09pNGc/edit?usp=sharing
On the server where I run the browser I configured xrdp and I'm
connecting to its display from a windows 2008 R2 via mstsc; donna if
this can influence layout..

I'm going to try the steps for the transaltion... thanks.

strange - looks like an encoding-related issue
[for some reason, all-and-only the Asian locales
(Japanese, Korean, Chinese) appear with squares).
Which FF version that you are using on your CentOS 6.4?
Can you verify in your FF Menu that the selected Character Encoding is "Unicode
(UTF-8)"?
@Alexander - any additional thoughts?

you can go https://translate.zanata.org/zanata/project/view/ovirt, sign up,

[Users] page layout scrambled in 3.3?

2013-09-16 Thread Gianluca Cecchi
Firefox on CentOS 6.4 ( version firefox-17.0.8-1.el6.centos.x86_64)
gives these kinds of layout, just after engine-setup phase.

This is when selecting "Default" datacenter icon:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvVGhxck9kTGJtLXc/edit?usp=sharing

This is when I select the main "System" icon:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvcU11czRsTW1yX1k/edit?usp=sharing

the engine is freshly installed fedora 19 where to day I ran update
and engine-setup after enabling beta ovirt repo
(ovirt-engine-3.3.0-4.fc19.noarch installed)

Anyone else?
What would be recommended browser for upcoming 3.3 and its version?

Thanks,
Gianluca

Hello,

Is there any recommended procedure for updating from 3.2 to 3.3 (namely on a
CentOS 6.4 system), or anything one should be careful when doing such update?

Thanks,

What about using ATA over ethernet (AoE) as an optional storage transport
within ovirt? Is this feasible? It seems that the protocol is fast and
efficient.

Every time I reboot ovirt-engine the VMs will disappear. No matter what

host to maintenance - it's always the same.

One interesting thing to note: Only VMs created from my custom template
will disappear! If I create a VM from the "blank" template, it will NOT
disappear.

Hi frank,
I verified that commit c54353b11fb9ac2cb59cbc3e04b58e9114cbecba solved this
issue as well.

also worth mentioning this was fixed for 3.3 GA prior to its release.

Of course, the VM Disks can still be found in the filesystem, but it's a
nightmare trying to guess what disk should be attached to what VM... I
consider these VMs lost, since it's (fortunately) my test server, but
still a day of work is lost.

These messages exist for every missing VM. A show-stopper for 3.3 if you

Be careful when you use glusterfs, not nfs over glusterfs, but read the
release-notes. It should have something to say about glusterfs domain
not (yet) working on el6.
Saw a small discussion on irc just yet and my two cents are that you
can't add el6 support to ovirt in release 3.2 and then withdraw it with
3.3 and say well just wait for Centos/Rhel-6.5.

We haven't removed any functionality in 3.3. In 3.2, we added support
for gluster domains through a POSIXFS interface. In 3.3, we're adding a
feature where we support gluster natively. This works in Fedora, but is
not available on EL6. The POSIXFS option still exists

The kernel can come from elrepo so that is not a burden for the ovirt
team, qemu/libvirt should be build by the ovirt team and be available
from the ovirt repo. At the moment I also see/saw Jboss-7.1.1
qemu/libvirt wouldn't be the first packages to be in the ovirt-repo
which are also in the main distributions repos.

We're trying to work out a way to do this in a consistent manner going
forward. We should have a solution soon, but in the meantime, the other
functionality and features should work on both Fedora and EL6.

Thanks

Mike

Betreff: VM Crash at end of disk move

Hello,

Thanks for the assistance to get this all running. But now
I'm working on the next error on my new ovirt cluster.

I migrated a Windows 7 64Bit VMware VM into ovirt using
virt-v2v. VMWare tools were deinstalled in advance. After
two boots on ovirt everything seems fine. Just for curiousity
I moved the boot disk to another storage domain. At the
end the machine crashes without any indication of the
reason. ovirt webinterface log reads:

2013-Sep-10, 21:32 User admin@internal have failed to move disk
colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test_Disk to domain NAS3_IB.
2013-Sep-10, 21:32 VM colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test is down. Exit
message: Lost connection with qemu process.
2013-Sep-10, 21:19 User admin@internal moving disk
colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test_Disk1 to domain NAS3_IB.
2013-Sep-10, 21:19 Snapshot 'Auto-generated for Live Storage Migration'
creation for VM 'colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test' has been completed.
2013-Sep-10, 21:18 Snapshot 'Auto-generated for Live Storage Migration'
creation for VM 'colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test' was initiated by
admin@internal.
2013-Sep-10, 21:17 VM colvm40_1IB_win7x64_Office2010_Test started on Host
colovn1

After this crash VM can be started again. The disk image is
taken from the target storage domain. So it seems as if the
move was successful. Another (SLES 11 SP3) VM that was
newly created inside the cluster does not show this problem.

As I did not find qemu logs, what would be the best place to
start analysis with.

Best regards.

Markus

Memo for myself: Install ALL Windows VIRTIO drivers. virt-v2v
only does the basics to get the VM up after the migration.

Following up. Thanks to Assaf Muller for the tip: running a yum update on a
host works around the "The Hosts emulated machines are and the
cluster is [rhel6.4.0, pc-1.0]}". I guess it's just best to do that on all my
new hosts from now on. Not sure if it's officially recommended or documented to
do that.

Follow BZ1008243 if you're interested in the root cause.

looks like the resolution on your browser window is too low. If you make the

Saw a small discussion on irc just yet and my two cents are that you

The kernel can come from elrepo so that is not a burden for the ovirt

Re: [Users] FC19 upgrade, oVirt 3.3 and node problems

2013-09-16 Thread Itamar Heim

On 08/29/2013 10:44 AM, Alin Dragomir wrote:

Hello,

I need a little bit of help to get my setup in a stable state... ;( I
used to have this configuration on three physical machines:
- engine - oVirt 3.2.1/FC18
- host1 - FC18
- host2 - FC18
- NAS with NFS data domains

It all started with my mistake: upgrading the engine to FC19 without
checking oVirt compatibility first. Of course, afterwards ovirt-engine
wouldn't start anymore, but I had my VM's running on the two hosts and I
thought I'd wait it out until 3.3 is released.
Today my email server VM crashed and I cannot start it manually (tried
variations of the qemu-kvm command line, created tap devices, tried a
few other things without success).
After a while, I bit the bullet and enabled the oVirt 3.3 repo, and did
engine-upgrade. This seem to have worked fine except for a missing link
for Java which I fixed, so now I can access the web admin portal. I can
see the hosts and VM's that are running or stopped but I cannot start
any VM, error message is:

qemu-kvm: -drive file... Permissions denied

I checked the path and everything is accessible on the host.

Since I didn't have any other critical VM's on one of the host I made
possibly the second mistake: downloaded the oVirt node ISO and
reinstalled from scratch. First it wouldn't register due to a UUID
collision (crappy motherboard manufacturers) but I was able to make it
report a valid UUID and worked around that.
When I try to Approve the node, it goes through most of the steps but
fails with:

I downgraded the node from 3.1.0-0.999.5.vdsm.fc19 to
3.0.0-5.1.6.vdsm.fc19 but ran into the same error.
I noticed the Python scripts being run during the deployment come from
ovirt-host-deploy.tar, but I don't know where that comes from. I renamed
it and it was recreated.
I checked the Python packages and the node does have pygobject2 v2.28.6
installed. Import gobject from Phyton doesn't report any errors and I
even tried to run a modified persist.py on the node and it works just
fine, imports the functions and persists a file I gave it as a parameter.

At this point, I'm lost; the only thing I can think of would be to
reinstall Fedora (FC19?) on the bad node and to try to re-add the node -
but I have a guess I'll see the exact the same error. Or maybe enable
the nightly repo?...

Thank you.

PS. I set up a temporary mail gateway so I don't lose incoming mail but
it's getting a lot of spam, plus I don't have IMAP access to emails as
that server was doing amavisd spam filtering and IMAP besides Postfix. A
way to start the VM manually on the "good" host would definitely be a
workable temporary solution.

import an existing data domain is very high on the list for next version.
if you upgraded your db to 3.4, the upgrade should have kept a backup

It worked after I reinitialised the DB like this:

Might be nice to be able to specify/force this from /etc/sysconfig or

This is strange!

We use standard way to create the database:
fedora: /usr/bin/postgresql-setup
rhel/centos /etc/init.d/postgresql initdb

Both run:
 $SU -l postgres -c "$PGENGINE/initdb --pgdata='$PGDATA' --auth='ident'" >>
"$PGLOG" 2>&1 < /dev/null

So we cannot provide parameters to this process...
And we cannot specify locale environment variables as it uses su.

Eli, is there any solution for this?

Eli - ping?

I understand the complaint, honestly. And we're working on a solution

From the perspective of whether we should release with this limitation
or not, I'd point out that by not releasing, we'd be preventing everyone
from using any of the new features until we get a solution for this.
I'd rather release and make it available for everyone now and say that
the Gluster domain for EL6 will come as soon as we can work out the
dependency issues.

There have been a few considerations for solving this including
rebuilding pure upstream or fedora packages for EL6. That is a risky
solution in my mind since there are rather large deltas between Fedora
and EL6. We're looking at whether we can have a "virt-preview" type of
repo for EL6 similar to what exists today for Fedora[1].

Re: [Users] Problems with RHEL 5 x86_64 VMs in oVirt 3.3

Hello all,

Please, I'm performing tests with oVirt 3.3 and it has been working
really well, except the fact that the installation of RHEL 5 VMs is not
happening, not sure why. Does anybody else is experiencing the same
issue? Details:

Reproducible steps:

1) Start the VM via 'Run once" option.
2) Insert the boot parameters, for instance: linux text
3) vmlinuz and initrd are loaded without errors.
4) Black screen with a blinking cursor.
5) Anaconda never come up, Kernel is not loaded apparently.

The same behavior occurs with the following versions:

RHEL 5.9 x86_64
RHEL 5.8 x86_64
RHEL 5.7 x86_64

VM definitions:

Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x x64
Optimized for: Server

If I simple change to a RHEL 5.9 32Bits ISO (Even with the 'Operating
System' field defined to work for x64), I am able to carry on with the
VM installation and everything goes ok.

Fedora 18 and 19 for x84_64 works well, also RHEL 6 builds for x86_64.

Packages in use:

ovirt-engine-3.3.0-1.fc19.noarch
qemu-1.4.2-7.fc19.x86_64
qemu-kvm-1.4.2-7.fc19.x86_64
libvirt-1.0.5.5-1.fc19.x86_64

Details and data collected:

VM name: tests-rhel5-64bits
engine.log
vdsm.log
qemu process arguments
libvirt relevant logs

Last test timestamp: 2013-Sep-05, 12:09
VM tests-rhel5-64bits started on Host dell-pe2950-1

Should I file a bug?
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi!

I´ve trying to use qemu-ga in several different guests, Win7, 2008R2,
Fedora 18, and haven´t been able to get the agent to respond to
anything. Have managed to have the Windows version log some debugging:
1378199587.125000: debug: check
1378199587.125000: debug: prepare
1378199587.656250: debug: check
1378199587.656250: debug: prepare

But when installing the agent in Fedora, even when editing the
service-file to include "-v (for verbose logging) -l (log file)
/path/to/file.log", it doesn´t say anything at all. The only messages
logged are from when you stop the service:
1378206062.602118: debug: received signal num 15, quitting
1378206105.557416: debug: received signal num 15, quitting
1378206245.844695: debug: received signal num 15, quitting

No other messages logged. Information about the agent is sparse, and
uncertain if relevant since development progresses rapidly, which is a
good thing, but makes it harder to wrap your head around. Have tried to
use examples on "http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/QAPI/GuestAgent";
 for ways to test from
Host if agent is responding, e.g:
echo "{'execute':'guest-info'}" | socat stdio,ignoreeof
unix-connect:/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channels/TestVM.org.qemu.guest_agent.0

Yielded no "return" and nothing logged in any guest. Have installed
ovirt-guest-agent and spice-vdagent in both Windows- and Fedora clients
and that works perfectly, so the virtio-serial config/drivers are OK in
general, it´s just qemu-ga that´s troublesome.

Is there anyone here that´s managed getting qemu-ga working in any guest
at all?

Be careful when you use glusterfs, not nfs over glusterfs, but read the
release-notes. It should have something to say about glusterfs domain
 not (yet) working on el6.
Saw a small discussion on irc just yet and my two cents are that you
can't add el6 support to ovirt in release 3.2 and then withdraw it with
3.3 and say well just wait for Centos/Rhel-6.5.

The kernel can come from elrepo so that is not a burden for the ovirt
team, qemu/libvirt should be build by the ovirt team and be available

qemu/libvirt wouldn't be the first packages to be in the ovirt-repo

No, yum update won't upgrade ovirt packages.

If you're running on Fedora, you need to update Fedora first, then run
engine-upgrade. If you're on EL6, a simple engine-upgrade should work.

Ofer, any other gotchas? Can you have someone create a 3.2 to 3.3
upgrade page on the wiki?

We haven't removed any functionality in 3.3. In 3.2, we added
support for gluster domains through a POSIXFS interface. In
3.3, we're adding a feature where we support gluster natively.
This works in Fedora, but is not available on EL6. The POSIXFS
option still exists

You're right but what about users who want to use the (much)
improved speed of the gluster domain over the POSIXFS interface?
They are left out or they should move to Fed19 which I would do
but I need to convince a couple of other people as well and they
aren't going to agree.

I understand the complaint, honestly. And we're working on a
solution so that it will work for people on EL6.

From the perspective of whether we should release with this
limitation or not, I'd point out that by not releasing, we'd be
preventing everyone from using any of the new features until we get
a solution for this. I'd rather release and make it available for
everyone now and say that the Gluster domain for EL6 will come as
soon as we can work out the dependency issues.

The kernel can come from elrepo so that is not a burden for

We're trying to work out a way to do this in a consistent
manner going forward. We should have a solution soon, but in
the meantime, the other functionality and features should work
on both Fedora and EL6.

Thanks for the clarification and I'm waiting eagerly for
what/when the solution comes out.

There have been a few considerations for solving this including
rebuilding pure upstream or fedora packages for EL6. That is a
risky solution in my mind since there are rather large deltas
between Fedora and EL6. We're looking at whether we can have a
"virt-preview" type of repo for EL6 similar to what exists today
for Fedora[1].

Thanks

Mike

Yes, you can "git clone" this:

You´ll get with a directory called "ovirt-guest-agent", and inside of that is
another directory also called "ovirt-guest-agent" where there is a

Hi Itamar,

yes it was. Sorry for making it not clear. Reason was
that I missed to install ALL virtio drivers in the imported
Windows VM. For whatever reason qemu did not like
that and crashed at the end of a disk move.

I have found a few references to rhevm having the tools iso but
nothing on ovirt.

Is there a guest tools iso for ovirt as well?

Yes, you can "git clone" this:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-guest-agent

You´ll get with a directory called "ovirt-guest-agent", and inside of
that is another directory also called "ovirt-guest-agent" where there is
a README-windows.txt with instructions on how to intstall. HTH

is this wiki-fied somewhere?

The engine reports the network configuration as VDSM reports it. If the reported
network exists on the engine (by Logical Network definition), the admin will be
able to edit that network via the engine, else the engine considers a network
which doesn't exist on the engine to be non-managed and the only operation the
admin
can perform is removing it from the nic.

By bridges I meant logical networks marked as VM network (current vm network
implementation
by ovirt) as presented on the image in [1] marked by 2 "assigned networks".

I haven't tested that scenario since ovirt doesn't supports such topology.
I might expect that if the visible interface is down, although the hidden nic
is operational, the host will be set to non-operational, unless the network
isn't marked as required (on Cluster --> networks sub-tab).

I'd follow the next steps:
1. Via setupNetworks attach the LN to the visible nic.
2. Manually add the hidden nic as another leg of the bridge.

There is downside for this: If you decide to remove the network from the
engine-side,
you'll have to remove it manually from the hidden nic as well.

The above is experiential and based on assumptions of how ovirt should
behave with such configuration. I'd use it only on test enviroment.

Not that I´ve seen at least, this is what I found out from digging around a
little.

Exactly! But you still need the rest of the tree to actually install anything
anyway, which is why I wrote that you need to clone the tree first.
