Please allow me to step in as someone who worked on the extensions API as well,
There are more "missing bits" here.
You are referring to the "webapp side", but this is not enough.
We have also the engine side which has to become more pluggable.
In addition, we will probably need to handle all kinds of issues that rise from
our singletons at engine - class loading might be an issue here, no?
You don't want the "X-ton" (doubleton, tripleton, etc..) phenomena in your
setup - you don't want for example X instances of AsyncTaskManager.
I think that in general we should strive to turn engine into way more
pluggable/modular than it is now, imagine an "engine microkernel" (for those of
you who did not hear the term microkernel, I am referring you to jboss
architecture) - we should have a "thin microkernel" and the rest of the code
should be pluggable, using the extension API (and perhaps web fragments as
well).
What do you think?

Re: [ovirt-users] How to do Simulation of huge ovirt setup

2014-10-31 Thread Liran Zelkha
Hi

This is the correct forum, and you according to the problem description you
should use VDSM_Fake.
Your problem is that when you install a host from API, it tries to connect
via SSL and install the agent. You need to update your VDC_OPTION table.

   1. Shut down the ovirt process
   2. Run psql on your postgres machine and run the following command:

update vdc_options set option_value='false' where option_name='InstallVds';
update vdc_options set option_value='false' where
option_name='EncryptHostCommunication';

You should be able to connect to the hosts now.

[ovirt-users] Any way I can obtain an oVirt T-shirt?

2014-10-31 Thread Yair Zaslavsky
Hi guys,
I signed up to some meetups in my residential area, and I am considering to
give lecture that relates to oVirt.
Can I obtain an oVirt t-shirt somehow so I can wear for the presentation?
(Well, I can wear one of my Red-Hat T-shirts, but as I plan it be in context of
open source, I would prefer oVirt)

Cheers,
Yair

relying on changes in the UI table is a bad idea:

(1) potentially missing events:
the UI displays paginated data; if my VMs are sorted by name, and
I have 1000 VMs in my setup, and I just added a VM named "z", it will
be added to the last "page" which is not displayed right now, so I
wouldn't even be aware that something was added.

(2) potentially "creating" "fake" events:
changes in the displayed data in the UI can occur due to change in the
Search query; if I have 50 VMs in my setup, and I initially had the
"Vms:" search query, and now I change it to "VMs: name = a*", which
results in displaying only 10 VMs, this may falsely hint on removal
of 40 VMs from the system.

>
> 2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events

not sure if this is referring to VM-related events in the code (e.g.
hooking to the click on "OK" within the New VM / Remove VM dialog,
or hooking to the "Success" callback of the action response, or
something similar), or to the VM-related "Events" (i.e. the ones that
are displayed in the GUI within the Events main-tab / bottom section).
If the former: can be done, I assume, though not sure how complex it
would be to implement the infrastructure for that.
If the latter: this will "catch" actions that were performed either
via the GUI or outside the GUI; in this case, it would probably be
better to use an Engine extension API (solution "0" above) rather
than a UI plugin, since it will be more reliable, will be active
even when the GUI is not in use, etc.

Ovirt 3.5 is running well for me and I have freeIPA controlling access to
the user portal. I would like to provide templates of various linux setups
that all have freeipa for user authentication in the VM for my developers
to be able to create a new VM from and then log in using their freeIPA
access and sudo control. I'm wanting to group developers by project and use
freeIPA to set sudo commands as needed (group A get oracle, group B get
postgresql, etc). Wanting to maximize developer ability while minimizing my
clean up time :-) They will be able to delete VMs they create.

It's possible to do a kickstart deploy with freeIPA registration but a
template from that will be a problem as it will have the same keys for all
VMs.

Is there a post-creation scripting process I can attach to in ovirt or
should I look at a default root user and script that personalizes the new
VM?

Hi,

Please if somebody can help me because I am pretty stuck. As I said in
previous posts I used this Python example
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Cloud-Init_Integration to set root password,
hostname and resolv.conf. It worked without any problems for 3.4 oVirt
version and equivalent Python SDK (ovirt-engine-sdk-python-3.4.x.noarch).

Then, I have tried to write through yuml scripts more conf files than just
resolv.conf to configure guest. I also saw this post on the list:
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-October/028539.html. So based
on that, I decided to upgraded oVirt and SDK
(ovirt-engine-sdk-python-3.5.0.7-1.el6.noarch) to 3.5 version. The upgrade
itself passed without any problem.

>From that point forward I tried to use custom_script parameter (as
suggested by Shahar) inside Initialization class and CloudInit class
without any luck.

Can somebody please provid

Excellent idea! Could we get such notifications and publish them to some
event bus within Engine backend (exposing them to other webapps running
within Engine EAR context) + have WebSocket webapp that pushes them to
connected clients? (or, if we don't want WebSocket, some other push-like
alternative)

Imagine a different way to build JavaScript web applications - it first
fetches all relevant data, caches it, and then just receives updates that
modify its cache.

Re: [ovirt-users] webhook

2014-10-31 Thread Vojtech Szocs
Hi,

if I get this correctly, you'd like to be notified when certain event
happens (VM created/deleted/etc.) and react upon that. I see multiple
possible approaches here:

0, improve Engine extension API (refer to Alon Bar-Lev for details)
   - if extensions can be packaged as JARs and these JARs could include
 web fragments [1] it would mean the possibility to deploy custom
 servlets onto existing Engine instance (in context of webapp that
 processes extensions)
   - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be notified
 once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented yet)
 and do whatever logic is needed
   - once I asked Alon about ^^ but never got response from him
   - IMHO this would be a nice way to deploy custom Java code on Engine

[1] https://blogs.oracle.com/swchan/entry/servlet_3_0_web_fragment

1, improve UI plugin API
   - add "VirtualMachineDataLoaded" event fired upon each refresh of
 VM data in UI table (generalization -> "{Entity}DataLoaded")
   - this is similar to existing "{Entity}SelectionChange" events

2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events

The disadvantage of 1, and 2, is that WebAdmin GUI must be open.
In any case, if you'd like to explore the possibility of doing this
via UI plugin, I'm here to help.

[ovirt-users] How to do Simulation of huge ovirt setup

2014-10-31 Thread suyog jadhav
Hi All,

I am writing a solution to monitor ovirt/RHEV manager which will list out all
the entities and thier properties/statistics.

My setup consists of manager running on virtual machines and 2 physical
machines acting as hosts.

However I am interested in creating a setup where I will have hundreds of hosts
and thousands of vms.

I have looked at following tutorials.

http://www.ovirt.org/VDSM_Fake

http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers#Fake_KVM_Support

However I faced problems such as manager not recognizing hosts/setting their
status to "Install Failed/Non-responsive".

Is there a detailed step-by step guide available to do the fake/simulated PSR
setup.

I have availability of VMs but not of physical hardware.

Please let me know if this is correct forum or should I ask on the devel list.___

ok, now it seems that broker runs fine, so I need the recent agent.log

This what I have done; remember you need to add the 3.5 repos otherwise
VDSM will be (re)installed from the latest 3.4 repos and not upgraded to
the '3.5' version. Also, this process went like a charm without any
issues (let alone loosing guest)

One question related to host reinstall vs "yum update vdsm*" comes into
my mind now..

On one of my all-in-one environments, which started from 3.0 days and
now is at 3.5 through progressive updates, I recently noticed some
*.rpmnew packages related to both engine and vdsm components.
I always updated the host part through "yum update" on this all-in-one
server.
This situation forced me to compare running .conf file vs .rpmnew ones
and to clean then the situation.

The question is: in general when you run "reinstall host" from engine
gui, does this process run a "yum update" and so you should care about
possible change in .conf files format, or does it go through
uninstall/install?

change in .conf files format, or does it go through uninstall/install?

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt 3.5 and FreeIpa

2014-10-31 Thread Marcelo Donato
Below the solution. Resolved By "Alon Bar-Lev"

1. install ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap, it is available in
ovirt-3.5-snapshots repository.

2. create /etc/ovirt-engine/extensions.d/din.intranet-authz.properties

ovirt.engine.extension.name = din-intranet-authz
ovirt.engine.extension.bindings.method = jbossmodule
ovirt.engine.extension.binding.jbossmodule.module =
org.ovirt.engine-extensions.aaa.ldap
ovirt.engine.extension.binding.jbossmodule.class =
org.ovirt.engineextensions.aaa.ldap.AuthzExtension
ovirt.engine.extension.provides = org.ovirt.engine.api.extensions.aaa.Authz
config.profile.file.1 = /etc/ovirt-engine/aaa/din.intranet.properties

3. create /etc/ovirt-engine/extensions.d/din.intranet-authn.properties

ovirt.engine.extension.name = din-intranet-authn
ovirt.engine.extension.bindings.method = jbossmodule
ovirt.engine.extension.binding.jbossmodule.module =
org.ovirt.engine-extensions.aaa.ldap
ovirt.engine.extension.binding.jbossmodule.class =
org.ovirt.engineextensions.aaa.ldap.AuthnExtension
ovirt.engine.extension.provides = org.ovirt.engine.api.extensions.aaa.Authn
ovirt.engine.aaa.authn.profile.name = din.intranet
ovirt.engine.aaa.authn.authz.plugin = din-intranet-authz
config.profile.file.1 = /etc/ovirt-engine/aaa/din.intranet.properties

4. create /etc/ovirt-engine/aaa/din.intranet.properties

include =

vars.user = uid=admin,cn=users,cn=accounts,dc=din,dc=intranet
vars.password = 123456
vars.server = ipa1.din.intranet

pool.default.serverset.single.server = ${global:vars.server}
pool.default.auth.simple.bindDN = ${global:vars.user}

5. restart engine.

Thanks a lot Alon.

I do not understand how it is related, not sure I follow. The local admin aka

This went fairly well with me. I did not loose a single machine and the
process was transparent for them (I even had a script running lots of
queries against a web server in one vm).

The Engine and VDSM are fully backward compatible to each other [1]. So
you should not see any problems there; only missing some features maybe.

This what I have done; remember you need to add the 3.5 repos otherwise
VDSM will be (re)installed from the latest 3.4 repos and not upgraded to
the '3.5' version. Also, this process went like a charm without any
issues (let alone loosing guest)
>
> Thanks in advance.
Please keep in mind, upgrading your datacenter(s) to 3.5 might lead to
some issues, some of them already fixed for 3.5.1 (I had some more
severe ones). I would be careful with this setting in a production env.
Also, some featues are available on cluster versions only; not requiring
the more invasive datacenter upgrade [2].

Hello Iordan,
I see that the bug report is ON_QA since 3.5.0_rc2.
Are you going/planning to update Opaque so that we will be able to verify
proxy support?
I also posted a comment into the bug report itself to ask clarifications
about changes in 3.5.0

Regarding console - I guess this link has to do with how to display a web page
in native app (I asked a mobile developer friend of mine) -

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebView.html

And this ovirt page can help with spice client for html5 ?

Hello!
I was asking because I use my 3 hypervisor also as providers of glusterfs
bricks (replicate) and I have some issue when I upgraded Hypervisor (think
about glusterfs packages and vdsm-gluster).

In your configuration you you shouldn't have any problems if you do it as
per your e-mail.

It would be nice to understand if this is related to that host only or if this
is a common case and we should increase the limit within setup.
Never seen this issue before.

Sorry, I was very excited about the news, so I forgot to answer the rest.
I agree about "user portal" - sounds good to begin with.
Another idea I had in the past is to have an app (push-based) that will push
events to a special client.
We will have a push sever that will get notifications from the event notifier,
and this server will push the events to registered clients.

What do you mean "is that possible"? technically sounds feasible to me (well,
we'll need to figure out about the console, but an mgmt app without the
console, why not?) )

Yes exactly, so you can safely backup the first disk.
You have a consistent point in time backup.

But it depends on your workload, if you run dbs inside the vm
you want to have an agent for backups in the vms.

there is plenty of documentation on this topic available.

I don't remember any particular doc regarding it, it could be nice to have
something related to it added to the great doc we now have on oVirt:
http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide

oVirt already runs some optimizations/configurations by itself, but if your
hosts are based on CentOS/Red Hat 6.x I think you could also refer to these
docs
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Virtualization_Host_Configuration_and_Guest_Installation_Guide/index.html

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Virtualization_Tuning_and_Optimization_Guide/index.html

and put questions and write answers here, if you find something useful not
already covered in oVirt semi-automatic setup

2014-10-31 Thread Mohyedeen Nazzal
Thanks Sven,

Detaching the domain is not an option, sorry if did not make it clear i
meant to backup the storage domain while VMs are running.

Also regarding the Live Snapshot option, The live snapshot simply create a
second hardisk for the VM and start to write on it.. it does not do any
backup just a restore point.

Thanks,
Mohye.

Just detach the storage domain (for consistency).
Than you can "tar" the whole thing, maybe other methods
work too, but most do not very well when it comes to sparse files.
Use tar with the "-S" flag.

HTH

PS: There is also a backup api and you can try to backup running
vms with live snapshots.

[ovirt-users] NFS Storage domain backup

2014-10-31 Thread Mohyedeen Nazzal
Hi ,

I'm using NFS storage domain, is it possible to backup the domain manually?
or is there an api in ovirt which support this?

For manual backup, is possible to use tools like rsync ? or the data will
not be consistent ?

Any idea of possible solutions for this?;as we don't have dedicated storage
box.

Thanks,
Mohyedeen.

afaik ovirt does reserve some portions of memory for itself, so there's

interesting

what about engine side? when will support get dropped there?
This is very important because it most likely requires to install a new
server with el7 and recover engine db there, which needs some planning.

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted engine deploy failed 3.5 centos 6.5 host FC20 vm

2014-10-31 Thread Jiri Moskovcak

Hi Alastair,
I need the engine.log to debug it, because the actual problem is logged
there.

Thanks,
Jirka

OK I seem to be having some fundamental confusion about this migration.

I have an existing ovirt 3.5 (upgraded from 3.4) setup with a Data
Center containing four clusters, 3 VM clusters for 3 differenc classes
of CPU hosts (Penryn, Nehalem, and SandyBridge). I also have a gluster
storage cluster.

There are 4 storage domains, an Export domain (Export-Dom1) nfs v1, and
ISO domain (Gluster-ISOs) posix FS v1, a Data domain (Gluster Data)
GlusterFS V3, and a Data (Master) (Gluster-VM-Store) GlusterFS v3.

As Gluster replica 2 is not considered adequate for the hosted-engine
storage I created a volume in the gluster store and exported it as NFS.
This is what I planned to use as the storage pool for the hosted
engine.  So far so good.

I have tried the deployment several times now, and it fails with the
following:

[ ERROR ] Cannot automatically add the host to cluster None: HTTP
Status 401
[ ERROR ] Failed to execute stage 'Closing up': Cannot add the host
to cluster None

The hosted-engine host cluster name it seems is set to "None", and then
fails to add the host as there is no cluster "None" in the restored
engine. Presumably the storage domain would need to be added too,
however I don't ever seem to see any message about this

I recall being prompted for a data-center name and even a storage-domain
name, but not a cluster name, so am I missing a step. I could use some
guidance as I am stumped. Is there some pre-migration tasks I am
failing to do in the original engine?
