Subject: [ovirt-users] searching vm disks according to vm tags
To: "users@ovirt.org"

Hello,

Is there a possibility to filter (in manager) all disks which belongs to
vms with certain tag? If not I think it would be useful. What do you think?

Currently the Disks TAB in webadmin does not support searching by tag, you may
open a RFE for that

ok, I'll open a RFE.

I am trying this: I have about 50 vms with disks on different storages. I
have tagged some from this vms by tag "migrate_to_new_storage" and then I
would like to move all appropriate disks to new storage. It seems it is not
possible from manager (in simple way - it looks like I have to filter vms
by tag, then click on every of them, choose disks tab, select them, click
move,...).

It would also be nice to have possibility to filter by tags also with
boolean operator "AND" and not just "OR".

There is already a RFE for that
For doing so we should add a TAB in the webadmin for Tags that will enable that
The challenge is that the result can be mixed entities (hosts, vms etc...), not
trivial to display in one result list ...

understand, it sounds really challenging.

Thanks, Jiri

Cheers,

Jiri

[ovirt-users] Network statistics shown in ovirt doesn't look correct.

2015-09-07 Thread Ramesh Nachimuthu

Hi,

I have a strange issue with the network traffic shown in oVirt
webadmin portal. I have 2 10 Gb network card and I have created bond out
of them. I have used *'iperf*' command to generate10 Gbps traffic and I
can see that getting reflected in my nagios monitoring. Also iperf
command confirms that it transferred the data at the rate of 9.38
Gbits/sec. But oVirt Ui shows only 1500 Mbps. I am not sure how oVirt
shows very low traffic. Anyone experiencing the similar problem?

VDSM Version: vdsm-4.16.20-1.3.el6rhs.x86_64
Ovirt release : both 3.5 and 3.6

I have attached the relevant screen shots here.

Ramesh

Re: [ovirt-users] Ovirt problem

2015-09-07 Thread Roy Golan
If your ovirt engine service is stopped then that's normal. The hosted
engine agent is constantly checking a servlet on your ovirt-engine.

If you want to stop this till you bring back all your setup into working
shape do this -

  hosted-engine --set-maintenance=global

Don't forget to revert it when you are done:

  hosted-engine --set-maintenance=none

Can you provide the output of

  vdsClient -s 0 getVdsStats

when iperf is running?

Could you see if a similar issue happens with a new 3.6 vdsm?

Dan.

 Hi all,

I just updated my existing oVirt 3.5.3 installation (iSCSI hosted-engine on
CentOS 7.1). The engine update went fine. Updating the hosts succeeds
 until the
first reboot. After a reboot the host does not come up again. It is
 missing all
network configuration. All network cfgs in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
 are
missing except ifcfg-lo. The host boots up without working networking.
 Using
IPMI and config backups, I was able to restore the lost network configs.
 Once
these are restored and the host is rebooted again all seems to be back to
 good.
This has now happend to 2 updated hosts (this installation has a total of 4
hosts, so 2 more to debug/try). I'm happy to assist in furter debugging.

Before updating the second host, I gathered some information. All these
 hosts
have 3 physical nics. One is used for the ovirtmgmt bridge and the other 2
 are
 used for iSCSI storage vlans.

[ovirt-users] Support for QinQ

2015-09-07 Thread Sigbjorn Lie
Hi list,

I've been looking around the web for QinQ support in Ovirt. I see that QinQ is
supported in CentOS
6.x and above. However I cannot see any documented support in Ovirt. I've come
across the page
below which details QinQ as a future feature.

Is QinQ still a future feature, or is it possible to use QinQ with Ovirt today
somehow?

http://www.ovirt.org/Networking

Regards,
Siggi

[ovirt-users] [ANN] oVirt 3.6.0 Fourth Beta Release is now available for testing

2015-09-07 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
The oVirt Project is pleased to announce the availability
of the Fourth Beta release of oVirt 3.6 for testing, as of September 3rd,
2015.

oVirt is an open source alternative to VMware vSphere, and provides an
excellent KVM management interface for multi-node virtualization.
This release is available now for Fedora 22,
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7, CentOS Linux 6.7 (or similar) and
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1, CentOS Linux 7.1 (or similar).

This release supports Hypervisor Hosts running
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1, CentOS Linux 7.1 (or similar),
Fedora 21 and Fedora 22.
Highly experimental support for Debian 8.1 Jessie has been added too.

This release of oVirt 3.6.0 includes numerous bug fixes.
See the release notes [1] for an initial list of the new features and bugs
fixed.

Please refer to release notes [1] for Installation / Upgrade instructions.
New oVirt Node ISO and oVirt Live ISO will be available soon as well[2].

I'm afraid we do not support QinQ, and it's not on our immediate
roadmap.

However, we would love to understand your use case (do you want to
tunnel VM traffic within QinQ? why?)

I believe you can use network custom properties and
before/after_network_setup hookpoint in order to tinker with this
yourself.

Dan.

[ovirt-users] Ovirt 3.6 Beta testing hosted-engine : no VM engine on Webui

2015-09-07 Thread wodel youchi
Hi,

I tried many setup of hosted-engine and so far I couldn't get the VM engine
to show up on webui.

trying to import the hosted_storage to ovirt worked, but trying to attach
this domain to the *Default DC*, causes the

*VM engine to crash.*
I am doing something wrong?

Another thing

the engine-setup fails when ovirt-vmconsole is configured, whith this error
[ INFO ] Restarting ovirt-vmconsole proxy service
*[ ERROR ] Failed to execute stage 'Closing up': Failed to stop service

I can just confirm this weird behavior with our latest beta release.
I'm still trying to understand why it's suddenly dying.

setup is referring to ovirt-vmconsole-proxy, more specifically to the unit file:

$ rpm -ql ovirt-vmconsole-proxy | grep service
/usr/lib/systemd/system/ovirt-vmconsole-proxy-sshd.service

Nice that you solved! But this means we need an engine-setup patch to handle
this case.

Hi again,

I tried to added hosted_storage but* I didn't select* "Activate domain in
data center", but ovirt went with the activation, which caused the VM
engine to crash.

[ovirt-users] strange iscsi issue

2015-09-07 Thread Demeter Tibor
Hi All,

I have to create a test environment for testing purposes, because we need to
testing our new 10gbe infrastructure.
One server that have a 10gbe nic - this is the vdsm host and ovirt portal.
One server that have a 10gbe nic - this is the storage.

Its connected to each other throught a dlink 10gbe switch.

Everything good and nice, the server can connect to storage, I can make and run
VMs, but the storage performance from inside VM seems to be 1Gb/sec only.
I did try the iperf command for testing connections beetwen servers, and it was
9.40 GB/sec. I have try to use hdparm -tT /dev/mapper/iscsidevice and also it
was 400-450 MB/sec. I've got same result on storage server.

So:

- hdparm test on local storage ~ 400 mb/sec
- hdparm test on ovirt node server through attached iscsi device ~ 400 Mb/sec
- hdparm test from inside vm on local virtual disk - 93-102 Mb /sec

The question is : Why?

ps. I Have only one ovirtmgmt device, so there are no other networks. The
router is only 1gbe/sec, but i've tested and the traffic does not going through
this.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Tibor

Unless you're using a caching filesystem like zfs, then you're going to be
limited by how fast your storage back end can actually right to disk. Unless
you have a quite large storage back end, 10gbe is probably faster than your
disks can read and write.

Re: [ovirt-users] strange iscsi issue

2015-09-07 Thread Demeter Tibor
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I'm sorry but I don't think so. This storage is fast, because it is a SSD based
storage, and I can read/write to it with fast performance.
I know, in virtual environment the I/O always slowest than on physical, but
here I have a very large difference.
Also, I use ext4 FS.

Thanks

Tibor

My suggestion would be to use a filesystem benchmarking tool like bonnie
++ to first test the performance locally on the storage server and then
redo the same test inside of a virtual machine. Also make sure the VM is
using VirtIO disk (either block or SCSI) for best performance. I have
tested speeds over 1Gb/s with bonded 1Gb NICS so I know it should work
in theory as well as practice.

Oh, and for the record. IO doesn´t have to be bound by the speed of
storage, if the host caches in RAM before sending it over the wire. But
that in my opinion is dangerous and as far as I know, it´s not actived
in oVirt, please correct me if I´m wrong.

Re: [ovirt-users] strange iscsi issue

2015-09-07 Thread Alex McWhirter
Are we talking about a single ssd or an array of them? VMs are usually large
continuous image files. SSDs are faster delivering many small files over large
continuous file.

I believe ovirt forces sync writes by default, but I'm not sure as I'm using
NFS. The best thing to do is figure out whether it's a storage issue or network
issue.

Try setting your iscsi server to use async writes, this can be dangerous if
either server crashes or loses power so I would just do it for testing
purposes.

With async writes you should be able to hit near 10gbps writes, but reads will
depend on how much data is cached and how much ram the iscsi server has.

Are you presenting a raw disk over iscsi, an image file, or a filesystem lun
via zfs or something similar?

Alex sent the message, but his phone sent the typos...

I do not recommend it, as it would not reflect real life usage later on.

Some tips when using iSCSI and general IO performance:
- The VM should be using VirtIO for both disk and NIC.
- I recommend XFS over EXT4, but both are OK generally. If possible,
however, I'd test with a raw block device first.
- Ensure you have enough paths to the storage and/or multiple iSCSI
sessions. You may wish to configure the iSCSI target portal with
multiple IP addresses (not only for redundancy, but for multiple
connections).
- I highly recommend 'fio' as an IO tool over Bonnie or hdparm.

Is the VM CPU the bottleneck, perhaps?
Y.
