[ovirt-users] OVA Import - Failed to convert VM

2016-12-04 Thread Nate T. Llaneza
Hey All,

I am trying to import a VM into oVirt. I am attempting to use the web interface
to do so. I started by exporting a ova file directly from VMware Workstation. I
uploaded the file to the local hard disk of a virtual host. Changed the
permissions on the file to 36:36. The last step from what I can see was to go
into the web interface and "import" the VM. I used the VMware Virtual Appliance
as the source and specified the local path to the ova. It detected the ova, and
I was able to move it into the "Virtual Machines to Import" box. After oVirt
starts the import of the VM it ends up failing with the error "Failed to
convert VM", and then shortly after it deletes the VM.

I am attaching a snippet of the engine.log, but I can't really make heads or
tails of the error messages in there. I am on oVirt 4.0.5. The virtual host is
running CentOS 7. Thanks in advance!

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt 4 and external networks

On Dec 3, 2016 11:18 PM, "Chris Cowley" wrote:

Evening all

I am struggling to get VMs on a tagged VLAN with oVirt to communicate
with a physical machine that is 'untagged' on that VLAN.

This VLAN is tagged on the port for my ovirt host, and any VMs attached
to that network work perfectly within oVirt (single host). On that host
I have added an IP on that VLAN too.

On a couple of host other physical machines, it is connected on to that
VLAN untagged and another is on it tagged. They communicate fine, and
also with the oVirt host on that VLAN. No traffic goes to or from the
VMs however.

https://www.draw.io/i/EiXgaUi

As my switch is doing tagging/untagging should I be importing the
network? If that is the case, err, how?

When you define a VM network in ovirt, it either globally has a vlan tag,
or has not. This cannot be con trolled per host.

However, you could set a before-network-setup vdsm hook. When Engine asks
the host to create a tagged network, the hook would modify the request to
an untagged network.

Then, traffic from vms running on that host would be tagged only by the
switch (I assume that now it ends up q-in-q).

If you end up writing this hook, please share it with us. You can look into
vdsm-hook-fcoe for a (completely different) network hook.

The manager is handling the HA. Without it the HA will not work.
I suggest to use self hosted engine to give the manager HA.

We do plan to expose the RO file system via API.
This is not yet scoped, but I hope to get it in within the year.

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

The only error I see in engine.log is

2016-12-04 11:34:07,945 INFO
[org.ovirt.engine.docs.utils.servlet.ContextSensitiveHelpMappingServlet]
(default task-1) [] Context-sensitive help is not installed. Manual
directory doesn't exist: /usr/share/ovirt-engine/manual

Eventually after closing the error dialogs the dash board is displayed.

Most of the UI tabs then work normally, however 'Virtual Machines' tab
doesn't display any information, just the progress 'dots' on the first
line, it then cycles through the null query error dialogs.

This error also appeared in the log while I was writing this:

If I restart the ovirt-engine process, the UI works for a while before the
Operation Canceled dialogs start appearing again.

Any suggestions ?

It will probably start faster if you install haveged in the hosted
engine VM.
I run a similar setup and it goes a lot faster that way.

My setup is usally up in about 10min if I do nothing and if 'helping' it
I can get it up in around 6-8min. I usally don't bother and have another
cup of coffee :-)

About shutting down. I have a small script that shuts down the
ha-agent/ha-broker, then the engine and then vdsm/sanlock/nfs-server.
Search the ML for it and I can post it again if needed.
Putting the host into global maintenance and then shutting down will
work too but then you need to script --maintenance --mode=none during
startup.

problem :
how can I change Storage.Misc.excCmd _getPathsStatus " /usr/bin/taskset
--cpu-list 0-7 /usr/sbin/dmsetup status" to :

   /usr/bin/taskset --cpu-list 0-7 /usr/sbin/dmsetup status --target
multipah

I think add iscsi type storage , if supervdsm scan mulitpah will solve
my problem .(my environment have other dm devices, use "dmsetup status"
will show them, and vdsm get dm path status will occur error )

so I changed some as follow :
 (1)
   I define EXT_DMSETUP_STATUS in
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/vdsm/constants.py
:

/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/vdsm/constants.py:EXT_DMSETUP =
'/usr/sbin/dmsetup'
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/vdsm/constants.py:EXT_DMSETUP_STATUS =
"/usr/sbin/dmsetup status --target multipath"

 (2)
 /usr/share/vdsm/storage/devicemapper.py add :
from vdsm.constants import EXT_DMSETUP_STATUS

and changed getPathsStatus cmd to " EXT_DMSETUP_STATUS" :

def _getPathsStatus():
cmd = [EXT_DMSETUP_STATUS]# before : cmd=[
EXT_DMSETUP,"status"]

Why not change this to:
cmd = [EXT_DMSETUP, "status", "--target", "multipath"]

Y.

rc, out, err = misc.execCmd(cmd)

===

but log in supervdsm log also not change . Please help me ,how to change
code to let supervdsm exec "/usr/sbin/dmsetup status --target multipath"
in function  getPathsStatus() 。

Its not really an issue since on three tests now I have recovered fine but
it required some manual intervention on at least one occasion but otherwise
it just flaps about until it can settle on one and actually bring it up

Clocking it today its usually like this:

7 minutes for HE to come up on node 1 and access to web UI
+6 minutes while hanging on logging in to web UI
+9 minutes for one of the two storage domains to get activated as master

Total around 20 minutes before entire cluster is usable.

Can you please verify DNS, both forward and reverse resolution, is properly
configured?
Which oVirt release are you using?
Y.
