[ovirt-users] Hosted-engine --deploy FQDN questions

2016-12-06 Thread Mark Steckel
Folks,

I'm an OVirt newbie having troubles setting up my first Hosted Engine and am
stumbling. In this case I think it may be because of the following two set-up
questions.

Enter the name which will be used to identify this host inside the
Administrator Portal [hosted_engine_1]:
Please provide the FQDN for the engine you would like to use.
This needs to match the FQDN that you will use for the engine
installation within the VM.
Note: This will be the FQDN of the VM you are now going to create,
it should not point to the base host or to any other existing machine.
  Engine FQDN: []:

My read of this is that the first question is asking for the name of the host,
while the second question is asking for the name (FQDN) of the guest vm which
will be the hosted-engine. Is this correct?

I'm also presuming that a) the first question should be the hostname of the
host, and b) that both the host and guest hostnames should resolve to IP
addresses.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Devin,

That's good to hear!

On the ovn-northd node, you need TCP ports 6641 and 6642 open (as mentioned in
Marcin's blog), on the ovn-controller nodes you need to allow packets with
destination UDP port 6081 (Geneve tunnels).

 Hi Sandro,
just tried to install self hosted engine in a nested environment (host

Still under testing: if something goes wrong you could just reinstall vdsm,
libvirt and ovirt-hosted-engine-setup rpms to get the missing files.

Based on asking around about the "dropping duplicate flow:", it's a
known issue that is harmless (other than the noise). I'll try
to find out if someone has a fix in the works.

It seems your node1 has no port bindings... is that expected?

>From the counters, it looks like node2 and node3 have attempted
to send packets on the geneve tunnels, but neither has received
anything.

Could you verify that node2 and node3 have connectivity on the
IPs used for the tunnels, e.g. by trying to ping 172.10.10.75
and 172.10.10.73 from node2?

If that works, the issue might be iptables rules dropping
geneve packets, the simplest way around that would be to
"systemctl stop firewalld" if that's running (ok for a lab
environment anyway).

Re: [ovirt-users] HE working fine, but still strange messages in /var/log/messages

2016-12-06 Thread Yanir Quinn
Hi Juan,

You probably see these repeating messages since ovirt-ha-agent is opening
and closing multiple connections.

see BZ:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1349829

This is probably harmless in the overall picture.

Hi Sandro,
just tried to install self hosted engine in a nested environment (host is
free ESXi 6.0 where I also have a working nested oVirt cluster of 3 HCI
gluster hosts).

The host is CentOS 7.2 updated with CR repo enabled (so it should be an
upcoming CentOS 7.3).

I used the provided appliance in
ovirt-engine-appliance-4.1-20161202.1.el7.centos.noarch

the deploy command arrived at this point and then failed

Hi Devin,

OK, some small progress then. I think the best next step would be to look
at the current state of your system. Could you send the output of the
following commands?

On the nodes running ovn-controller:

   ps -fwwC ovn-controller
   ovs-vsctl show
   ovs-dpctl show -s
   ovs-ofctl -O OpenFlow13 dump-flows br-int

On the node running ovn-northd:

   ovn-sbctl show
   ovn-sbctl dump-flows

I didn't said it is the right design, i guess that i can get nothing from
such bond and you are right, but,
This is was long discussed a year ago(maybe more) with network DEV when we
planed this feature and it was decided to allow to create bond from VFs.

Thanks,

As far as I know, it's not possible to do that. The reason is that the
bond normally creates new (logical) interface, what you are doing is
assigning "part" of the bond directly to a VM and the driver within VM
 isn't aware of the bond.

This is what I supposed, UI should prevent us to create VFfrom when nic

This could be explained by previous statement: bonding PFs at
hypervisor level and then assigning VFs to a VM can most likely cause
 undefined behavior.

The issue is the same when the PF is not attached to a bond, so in an

At hypervisor level? I believe it doesn't make sense.

I wonder this because UI allows to do it. The same as above, user

The use case for SR-IOV is maximum performance at the cost of
convenience while still (somewhat) allowing you to scale.

That doesn't mean we have the right design: there is no problem in
bonding 2 VFs belonging to 2 different PFs; but every sane software
warns you if you try to bond 2 VFs from the same PF together (what do
you get by such bond?) -- this applies to both host and guest.

Comparing to a large number of restrictions (migration and others), my

This snippet is not enough, and the attached logs are too new. Can you
check/share
more of the relevant log? Thanks.

Re: [ovirt-users] web-ui issues

2016-12-06 Thread Maton, Brett
Ok thanks.

I've restarted the ui a few times today, still nothing ( at all ) in
ui.log

The errors do look like 'iffy' queries, no errors in PostgreSQL logs
though.

Interesting, those aren't actually UI failures, those appear to be failures
from backend requests. As in, get me some data, and the query fails for some
reason, there should be something in the engine log. Let me dig up the ones
you posted again and take a closer look.

Re: [ovirt-users] OVA Import - Failed to convert VM

2016-12-06 Thread Shahar Havivi
Thanks Nate,
The Engine log is correct but the vdsm one is without the error, it maybe
the wrong host, the log that we expected is the one you named CTI04.
If you try to import again please make sure you select the right host in
the import dialog.

 Shahar.

Re: [ovirt-users] feedback and questions about SR-IOV feature

2016-12-06 Thread Martin Polednik

On 06/12/16 12:14 +0100, Nathanaël Blanchet wrote:

Hello,

My new 10G NICS support now SR-IOV, and I've played with this new
feature as passthrough device, so as to reduce my host CPU
consumption.

At the origin, I set up a bond on both 10G PF nics.

After many configurations, the only way I manage to use a VF into a
VM, is to get out of the bond one nic.

So does it mean that it is impossible to run a VM with VF with PF
attached to a bond?

As far as I know, it's not possible to do that. The reason is that the
bond normally creates new (logical) interface, what you are doing is
assigning "part" of the bond directly to a VM and the driver within VM
isn't aware of the bond.

Moreover, something strange happens : during the boot of the VM, the
passthrough device gets an dhcp IP on the native vlan of the bond, and
once finally up, the real vlan used by this device is on the different
predifined vlan. It implies to me to reconfigure the network to ping
something on the wanted vlan. Really crazy.

This could be explained by previous statement: bonding PFs at
hypervisor level and then assigning VFs to a VM can most likely cause
undefined behavior.

Other question is : In which case can it be useful to be able to bond
2 VF? UI let us to do so, but it is impossible to add any bridge on
that virtual bond.

At hypervisor level? I believe it doesn't make sense.

If you require bond between 2 PFs, you can assign 2 VFs each from
different PF to a VM and bond them within the guest.

Comparing to a large number of restrictions (migration and others), my
opinion is that this feature seems to be very difficult to use in
production...

The use case for SR-IOV is maximum performance at the cost of
convenience while still (somewhat) allowing you to scale.

[ovirt-users] feedback and questions about SR-IOV feature

2016-12-06 Thread Nathanaël Blanchet

Hello,

My new 10G NICS support now SR-IOV, and I've played with this new
feature as passthrough device, so as to reduce my host CPU consumption.

At the origin, I set up a bond on both 10G PF nics.

After many configurations, the only way I manage to use a VF into a VM,
is to get out of the bond one nic.

So does it mean that it is impossible to run a VM with VF with PF
attached to a bond?

Moreover, something strange happens : during the boot of the VM, the
passthrough device gets an dhcp IP on the native vlan of the bond, and
once finally up, the real vlan used by this device is on the different
predifined vlan. It implies to me to reconfigure the network to ping
something on the wanted vlan. Really crazy.

Other question is : In which case can it be useful to be able to bond 2
VF? UI let us to do so, but it is impossible to add any bridge on that
virtual bond.

Comparing to a large number of restrictions (migration and others), my
opinion is that this feature seems to be very difficult to use in
production...

[ovirt-users] API req to update power mgmt options

2016-12-06 Thread Emil Flink
Hi,

Can someone please provide an example request to edit the power management
options of a host?

Ie. the options contained in
host['power_management']['agents']['agent'][0]['options']['option'] and
host['power_management']['options']['option']

Currently I have:

"option": [
  {
"name": "power_wait",
"value": "4"
  },
  {
"name": "lanplus",
"value": ""
  }
]

I need to change the value of "lanplus" from nothing to 1 or "on".

I have tried replacing the entire host['power_management']['options'] set
and the host['power_management']['agents'] set with PUT requests to the API
endpoint for the host, with no change or errors - I just get a 200 OK
response with the details of the host as if I had just done a GET request.

This patch does not affect the issue that we have with duplicate multipath
entries created during vdsm start.
However, looks like the latest version of lvm2 disables lvmetad when
duplicate PVs are found and pvs command no longer hangs as originally
reported in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1303940 when
tested on RHEL 7.3

Not sure if we should be worried about this warnings or not.

The benefits of passthrough are

a) performance,
b) avoiding host stack (e.g. nic could only have guest OS drivers).

If your host is capable of passthrough[1], you can navigate to the VM
tab -> host devices subtab and assign the nic there.
