Re: [ovirt-users] Passing VLAN trunk to VM

2017-03-09 Thread Rogério Ceni Coelho
Hi,

Ovirt user interface does not allow to input 4095 as a tag vlan number ...
Only values between 0 and 4094.

This is useful to me too. Maybe any other way ?

Have you tried use Vlan 4095 ? On VMware it used to be the way to pass
all Vlans from a vSwitch to a Vlan in a single port. And yes I have used
it also for pfSense.

[ovirt-users] Passing VLAN trunk to VM

2017-03-09 Thread Simon Vincent
Is it possible to pass multiple VLANs to a VM (pfSense) using a single
virtual NIC? All my existing oVirt networks are setup as a single tagged
VLAN. I know this didn't used to be supported but wondered if this has
changed. My other option is to pass each VLAN as a separate NIC to the VM
however if I needed to add a new VLAN I would have to add a new interface
and reboot the VM as hot-add of NICs is not supported by pfSense.

Hi Simone,

I tried to change the number of cores and, after a reboot, the cpu model has
changed to Nehalem. The HostedEngine vm is now migrating correctly.

I will open a ticket anyway pointing to this specific behavior.

Thank you very much for the support!

Yes, i know. The network is defined by neutron, which has it's own dhcp server.

What do you mean?

there is no firewall between openstack controllers and ovirt
engine/hosts. My doubt is about configuration, i've configured in this
way:

Name: openstack-networks
Type: OpenStack Networking
Description:
Provider URL: http://openstack.example.com:9696

Flagged read-only and requires authentication

Set the authentication and tested, reports everything ok.

Nothing else has been configured. I didn't found any documentation
that clarified if is enough.

After powering on i see on openstack this:

[stack@opstrio1101 ~]$ openstack port list | grep 00:1a:4a:16:01:51
<-- this is mac address of oVirt VM
| 86c46fed-dddf-4776-a765-27d4e52e861c | nic1

Max memory is a version 4 feature, it isn't/won't be available in

In rest api v4 it's

Yes. We are working to integrate our engine and vdsm logs as well.
Hope you will find it helpful and would appreciate your input once we have

Thanks for reply Jakub Niedermertl,

 I would like the explicitly specifying in my script , but i dont know
the parameters for use for max memory.
Can you help me ?

Very Thanks.

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add permissions for LDAP users

2017-03-09 Thread Richard Neuboeck
Hi,

I seem to experience the same problem right now and am at a bit of a
loss as to where to dig for some more troubleshooting information. I
would highly appreciate some help.

Here is what I have and what I did:

ovirt-engine-4.1.0.4-1.el7.centos.noarch
ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-1.3.0-1.el7.noarch

I executed ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup. My LDAP provider
is 389ds (FreeIPA). I can successfully run a search and also login
from the setup script.

After running the setup I rebootet the Engine VM to make sure
everything is restarted.

In the web UI configuration for 'System Permissions' I'm able to
find users from LDAP but when I try to 'Add' a selected user the UI
shows me this error: 'User admin@internal-authz failed to grant
permission for Role SuperUser on System to User/Group .'.

In then engine.log the following lines are generated:

So far I've re-run the ldap-setup routine. I made sure all newly
generated files in /etc/ovirt-engine/[aaa|extensions.d] are owned by
ovirt:ovirt (instead of root) and have 0600 as permission (instead
of 0644). That didn't change anything.

I've also found an older bug report but for oVirt 3.5
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1121954
That didn't reveal any new either.

Any ideas what I could try next?

Thanks!
Cheers
Richard

I didn't mean that saving memory isn't useful. It is very useful, for
certain use cases. For the backup use case I think it is better to
disable it.

Re: [ovirt-users] cannot exceed maximum memory size

2017-03-09 Thread Jakub Niedermertl
Hi all,

Since engine 4.1 there is new property of VMs/templates - max memory
[1] that is required to be larger than (or equal to) memory size. The
problem is probably caused by the fact that the specified memory (I
assume that value of `memo` is 20480MB) is larger that max memory
that is implicitly copied from template (Blank in this case). I can
see two possible solutions:
* Explicitly specifying size of max memory in the script.
* Increasing max memory in the template.

Jakub

2017-03-09 Thread Marcin Mirecki
Hello Luca,
The osn provider basically only connects the vnics to the osn networks,
items like dhcp must be handled on the osn networks itself.
Have you tried connecting any nics manually and checking connectivity
between them?
No connectivity with static IP's could hint at some configuration problems.
Are osn/ovs set up correctly? Firewall blocking traffic?
Can you please send us a more detailed descirption of your env (ip addr,
brctl show, ovs-vsctl show)?

Thanks,

 Saving memory is essential in some apàplications like DB, so you
 won't bypass vm pauses for such a stuff

Yes, indeed, the important thing is to have an option so that you can
set it True or False, depending on the VM you are saving, the
application that is running isnide it and the way you want to do backup
of the application.
Nevertheless, RDBMS and also other applications often have some
mechanism to be "frozen in a consistent state" so that you can save what
you have on disk without need to save memory to have a consistent backup.
Oracle for example has functionality to be put in "backup mode" where
you issue "begin backup" before the snapshot and "end backup" right
after snapshot completion.
I see that POstgreSQL has similar functionality (not tested myself):
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/continuous-archiving.html#BACKUP-LOWLEVEL-BASE-BACKUP
and the same for other ones.

Gianluca

Just wanted to add that freezing activity is not only important for
databases, but also for plain file systems. In order to do a consistent
backup it is important to freeze the file systems before creating a live
snapshot, and thaw it afterwards. oVirt does that automatically, but
only if the guest agent is installed and running. So, remember to have
the guest agent installed and running in the virtual machines that you
plan to backup using this mechanism.
Very useful piece of information, so does that mean memory save feature
not to be really useful? if so, it shouldn't be the default, so that vm
never go into pause state unusefully.

I have a similar problem creating VM's with the API, but no solution.

  It seems that by default oVirt uses custom 'Instance Type' ( you can see

  The default RAM limit for custom Instance Type is 4096MB.

  I haven't found where you can change the settnigs for the custom instance
type though.

Not sure, adding Shahar as the owner of this seemingly-similar bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1425089

I guess 4.1 enforces some memory limits that 4.0 didn't. If I am
right, you'll have to increase these limits.

I don't think it will work.
We rely heavily on LVM when working with iSCSI and FC and I am not sure how
LVM will handle this kind of operation.
A storage domain is a VG that contains PVs (LUNS), and each disk is a LV.

 Are you sure your hosts are on the same DC ?

Yes, indeed.
I forgot to write it before, but I did verify that my VM with guest agent
installed had this inside its /var/log/messages file:

Mar  9 10:49:36 T-ORACLE73 qemu-ga: info: guest-fsfreeze called

Mar 9 10:49:37 T-ORACLE73 qemu-ga: info: executing fsfreeze hook with arg

Also, with vm_backup.py utility, I verified that inside the VM where the
snapshotted disk was attached (c7testovn1), I got this:

Just wanted to add that freezing activity is not only important for
databases, but also for plain file systems. In order to do a consistent
backup it is important to freeze the file systems before creating a live
snapshot, and thaw it afterwards. oVirt does that automatically, but
only if the guest agent is installed and running. So, remember to have
the guest agent installed and running in the virtual machines that you
plan to backup using this mechanism.

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt VM backup and restore

2017-03-09 Thread Maton, Brett
My 2cents

  I think it would be very handy to be able to choose to save the memory
state or not.

  As for anything requiring the memory state depends very much on what your
recovery procedure is.

  Gianluca, PostgreSQL pg_start / end backup works very well. I can't
remember exactly how it works but it's something along the lines of
stopping (disk) writes to the database and storing change in WAL (redo in
oracle speak) until the backup is complete then applying any changes to the
database files on disk.
  Basically means that the database files won't change during the backup
process.

Yes, indeed, the important thing is to have an option so that you can set
it True or False, depending on the VM you are saving, the application that
is running isnide it and the way you want to do backup of the application.
Nevertheless, RDBMS and also other applications often have some mechanism
to be "frozen in a consistent state" so that you can save what you have on
disk without need to save memory to have a consistent backup.
Oracle for example has functionality to be put in "backup mode" where you
issue "begin backup" before the snapshot and "end backup" right after
snapshot completion.
I see that POstgreSQL has similar functionality (not tested myself):
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/continuous-archiving.html#BACKUP-LOWLEVEL-BASE-BACKUP
and the same for other ones.

In a database, you actually want to ensure all transactions are complete
for an application-complete snapshot. I don't think memory is needed.

It might not be clear from the bug content, but:
1. It only affects RHV, not oVirt.
2. It does not fix your problem. It only allows the upgrade tool in version
4.1 to migrate a 3.6 engine to a _4.0_ appliance (not 4.1).

Indeed.

If you want to "fix" that, you can try to patch engine-backup - search in
it for VALID_BACKUP_RESTORE_PAIRS, there is a comment about enabling
4.0->4.1 upgrade. But as I wrote, this is not supported, and I am not aware
of anyone testing it - so things might break later on.

problem (the 3.6 api deprecation still in place... ;-):

$ diff backup.py backup.py.orig
123c123
<
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm,persist_memorystate=False))

---
>
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm))

The snapshot doesn't include memory and no problem at VM OS side now

Tested also getting the parameter from config file

Modifications needed in this case:

1)
$ diff backup.py backup.py.orig
123c123
<
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm,persist_memorystate=config.get_persist_memorystate()))

---
>
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm))

2)
$ diff config.py config.py.orig
34d33
< self.__persist_memorystate =
config_parser.getboolean(section, "persist_memorystate")

113,116d111
<
<
< def get_persist_memorystate(self):
< return self.__persist_memorystate

And in config file called add:

# Save Memory in snapshot
persist_memorystate=False

It could be further improved if one wants to differentiate save memory
for some VMs and not for other ones

HIH other ones,
Gianluca

[ovirt-users] "patched upgrade" from 4.0 (not appliance) => 4.1 (appliance) fails

2017-03-09 Thread Nelson Lameiras
Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade our ovirt-engine from 4.0 (centos manually installed) to
4.1.0 (appliance) using "hosted-engine --upgrade-appliance".

Our test setup :
2 hosts with centos 7.3 with ovirt4.0 (latest updates)
1 ovirt-engine 4.0 (latest update)

This method uses a manual backup from current engine and injects it to new
appliance. Since "old" ovirt-engine is a manually installed 4.0 (latest
version) as opposed to an appliance, upgrade process warns that it doesn't
recognise the current engine with a somewhat deprecated message :

[WARNING] Unable to detect engine version
[WARNING] Unsupported upgrade path
This procedure has been designed and tested only for upgrading the engine VM
from ['3.6'] to ['4.0'].
Any other usage is highly experimental and potentially dangerous:
Current engine: unknown
Selected appliance: 4.1-20170201.1.el7.centos
Do you want to abort the upgrade process? (Yes, No) [Yes]: no
[WARNING] Proceeding on an unsupported and highly experimental path

This fails, according to a bug already posted on
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1420283 which is resolved in future
4.1.1

So I tried to manually patch the file corrected in gerrit
https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/71965/ and - after multiple tries - it still fails
at the end with the following error :

...
[ INFO ] Running engine-setup on the appliance

|- HE_APPLIANCE_ENGINE_RESTORE_FAIL
[ ERROR ] Engine backup restore failed on the appliance
[ ERROR ] Failed to execute stage 'Closing up': engine-backup failed restoring
the engine backup on the appliance Please check its log on the appliance.

start using appliances.

I see that you already have a gerrit.ovirt.org, so it shouldn't be
difficult. The initial setup should be like this:

  $ git config --global user.name youruser
  $ git config --global user.email your@email
  $ git clone ssh://youru...@gerrit.ovirt.org:29418/ovirt-engine-sdk
  $ gitdir=$(git rev-parse --git-dir); scp -p -P 29418
youru...@gerrit.ovirt.org:hooks/commit-msg ${gitdir}/hooks/

Then, to submit the patch:

  $ cd ovirt-engine-sdk
  $ Edit the vm_backup.py file, and make your changes.
  $ git commit -a -s
  $ git push origin HEAD:refs/for/master

I already verified (on a 4.1 infra) that changing vm_backup.py downloaded
yesterday from master this way (apart connection paramters):

$ diff vm_backup.py vm_backup.py.orig

I get the backup result and snapshot is correctly without memory saved (and
no pause at VM side)

I have almost no experience in gerrit/github, unfortunately... only a

If you give me some pointers I can try to apply what you asked...

Very good point Gialuca, you are right, the 'persist_memorystate' flag
is 'true' by default, and that makes the pause longer. Would you be so
kind to add it to the 'vm_backup.py' example that is part of version 4
of the SDK?

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/blob/master/sdk/examples/vm_backup.py#L143-L151

using gerrit.ovirt.org).

Possibly the default changed at some point in time, so that now it saves
memory and so this implies pause of VM

In the mean time I verified changing backup.py this way solves the problem
(the 3.6 api deprecation still in place... ;-):

$ diff backup.py backup.py.orig
123c123
<
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm,persist_memorystate=False))
---
>
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm))

The snapshot doesn't include memory and no problem at VM OS side now

Tested also getting the parameter from config file

Modifications needed in this case:

1)
$ diff backup.py backup.py.orig
123c123
<
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm,persist_memorystate=config.get_persist_memorystate()))
---
>
vm.snapshots.add(params.Snapshot(description=config.get_snapshot_description(),
vm=vm))

2)
$ diff config.py config.py.orig
34d33
< self.__persist_memorystate =
config_parser.getboolean(section, "persist_memorystate")
113,116d111
<
<
< def get_persist_memorystate(self):
< return self.__persist_memorystate

And in config file called add:

# Save Memory in snapshot
persist_memorystate=False

It could be further improved if one wants to differentiate save memory for
some VMs and not for other ones

Re: [ovirt-users] Shrink gluster logical volume under Ovirt 4.0

2017-03-09 Thread Ian Neilsen
Hi Sahina

I was shrinking the underlying LV/filesystem of bricks associated with the
gluster volume.
Im successfully all the way through doing this now.

I place cluster into global maintenance and went about resizing the
lv/filesystem for each server.

I think it's working. :-)

Thanks for the reply
Ian
