Nothing, if you don´t have any special packages that you´d like to add.

Subject: VM hanging at boot - [drm] Initialized qxl
To: users@ovirt.org

Hello everyone,
I have some Centos7 vms created from template ( CentOS 7 Generic Cloud
Image v1802 for x86_64 )
I have alocated planty of resources to them, but they all have this issue
when starting, they hang with the following message in console about 5-7
minutes.

[drm] Initialized qxl 0.1.0 20120117 for :00:02:0 on mirror 0

After a while, vm eventually boots up...
Running self-hosted ovirt-node 4.2
Does anyone know what could be the issue for this behavior ?
Thank you !

Best regards, Leo David

So i have installed both ovirt-guest-agent-common and spice-vdagent. It
makes no difference, kernel hangs exaclty 5 minutes at each reboot, with
this message.
Any thoghts on this ?
Being a bit stucked on this issue, I can't move forward in configuring vms
and getting them into testing/production.

2018-06-13 Thread Leo David
Hi,
I've just managed to install guest agent by installing epel-release first.
yum -y install epel-release
yum -y install ovirt-guest-agent-common

At this moment is getting ovirt-guest-agent-common.noarch 0:1.0.14-1.el7

[ovirt-users] User agent for Ovirt 4.2

2018-06-13 Thread Jim Kusznir
Hi:

I haven't managed to find the new / current repo/source for the ovirt guest
agent for the 4.2 upgrade. All my VMs now say that they need the agent.
Googles keep referring me to old / broke / non-existent repos. Where do I
find the 4.2 agent (or does the 4.2 agent even exist?)

Thanks!

Which does work for under-utilized threshold where normal situation is
when free memory is above the threshold (or used memory below it). But
it does not work for over utilized threshold where normal is when free
memory is above the treshold.

There are many ways to describe those (above, below, used memory, free
memory) and it is too late to change it anyway.

2018-06-13 Thread Alastair Neil
when the free memory is below defined maximum value

this is the problem, this statement is veiled in double negatives

When a quantity is below a "Maximum" value then this is should be
considered normal
when a quantity exceeds a Maximum value this should be considered an error
condition

but this is not the case - when free memory falls below the threshold of
MaxFreeMemoryforOverUtlized we are overutilized

Hi, it is just a matter of perspective:

MaxFreeMemoryforOverUtlized - the host is considered over utilized
when the free memory is below defined maximum value
MinFreeMemoryforUnderUtilized - the host is considered under utilized
when the free memory is at least the defined minimal value

[ovirt-users] VM hanging at boot - [drm] Initialized qxl

2018-06-13 Thread Leo David
Hello everyone,
I have some Centos7 vms created from template ( CentOS 7 Generic Cloud
Image v1802 for x86_64 )
I have alocated planty of resources to them, but they all have this issue
when starting, they hang with the following message in console about 5-7
minutes.

[drm] Initialized qxl 0.1.0 20120117 for :00:02:0 on mirror 0

After a while, vm eventually boots up...
Running self-hosted ovirt-node 4.2
Does anyone know what could be the issue for this behavior ?
Thank you !

[ovirt-users] Question re: MaxFreeMemoryforOverUtlized and MinFreeMemoryforUnderUtilized

2018-06-13 Thread Alastair Neil
Can someone clarify these setting for me, I am having difficulty parsing
what exactly they mean. They seem to me to be backwards.

If I wish to set a threshold at which I want my host to be consider over
utilized, not schedule any new VMs, and migrate VMs away, then surely I
should specify a minimum threshold of free memory. I.E. if free memory
drops below my threshold (OR memory use exceed a maximum threshold) migrate
VM's off of this system.

Conversely if a system is underutilized I should set a maximum threshold of
free memory (Or minimum used memory).

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] Re: Moving from thin to preallocated storage domains

2018-06-13 Thread Bruckner, Simone
Hi,

I have defined thin LUNs on the array and presented them to the oVirt hosts.
I will change the LUN from thin to preallocated on the array (which is
transparent to the oVirt host).

Besides removing “discard after delete” from the storage domain flags, is there
anything else I need to take care of on the oVirt side?

All the best,
Oliver

Hi,

it actually does not make much difference unless you need some special
customization. Node is plug and play, CenOS + oVirt repos might have
fresher packages (snapshots, nightlies) and allow live changes.

[ovirt-users] RHEL 7.5 as an oVirt host - missing packages

2018-06-13 Thread jasonmicron
Hello everyone,

I believe there is a potential issue with the RHEL 7 yum repos and at least one
missing RPM to convert a pre-existing RHEL 7.5 system into an oVirt host node.

I have the following YUM repos enabled in my RHEL 7 system, according to the
documentation:

rhel-7-server-rpms
rhel-7-server-optional-rpms
rhel-7-server-extras-rpms

I installed the oVirt 4.2 RPM:
ovirt-release42-4.2.3.1-1.el7.noarch

I then go to the engine GUI to add the new host, and during the installation
process I am informed that there is a YUM transaction error with the following
package being unavailable:

python-qpid-proton (as a dependency install for the python-gofer-proton package)

I dug around Red Hat's YUM repos and discovered that this package only exists
in the rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.{1..3}-rpms YUM repos from the official
Red Hat site.

I tried enabling this repo (specifically the
rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.3-rpms repo) to see which version of the
package would be installed, and it appears to be a custom spin for Satellite in
the release version:

=
 Package Arch Version Repository
 Size
=
Installing:
 python-gofer-proton noarch 2.7.7-3.el7sat
lab1-rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.3-rpms54 k
Installing for dependencies:
 python-gofer noarch 2.7.7-3.el7sat
lab1-rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.3-rpms 132 k
 python-qpid-protonx86_64 0.16.0-7.el7
lab1-rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.3-rpms 216 k
 qpid-proton-c x86_64 0.16.0-7.el7
lab1-rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.3-rpms 131 k

Transaction Summary
==
Install 1 Package (+3 Dependent packages)

Since I shouldn't even require this repo according to the official oVirt
install documentation for hosts, and the fact that these packages appear to be
custom spins (el7sat) versions, I was curious if this is OK to use for oVirt or
if I have encountered a dependency bug with RHEL 7.5 and oVirt 4.2?

Any advice would be welcomed.

I would suggest to file a bug and attach the engine and ansible logs so we
can investigate why it fails for you.
It generally works in 4.2.3 but there were some fixes we've made in this
area - you may have encountered some of those issues or discovered a new

[ovirt-users] Re: OVA export/import

2018-06-13 Thread RabidCicada
Thanks for the quick reply,

I am using 4.2.3 and Ovirt cannot import it's own generated OVA. That
is why my whole investigation started. Is it known to work for anyone
else? Based on your statement it seems like it should be capable of
importing it's own; But my install, perhaps JUST my install and
no-one elses :), cannot do so. Can anyone verify import of ovirt
generated OVA's works on ovirt 4.2.3?

No, you can provide OVAs that were generated by oVirt as an input as well.
See examples [1] and [2] for doing this via the python-sdk. Doing that from
the webadmin is trivial is exactly like importing OVA that was generated by
VMware.

Well, we now use the same code for parsing OVFs that were generated by
oVirt and ones that were generated by VMware. So that's an evidence for
being compliant with the specification to some degree.

Indeed, there may be things that we don't use when reading the OVF, like
the field you mentioned, and therefore there may be some gaps here and
there.

Is this the only gap you found so far? if so then I would say we are in a
really good place since fixing that should be trivial, see [3]. You are
more than welcome to send a patch!

Depending what you're looking for.
If you want to *move* your entities (VMs/templates) from one deployment to
another then sure, detach the domain (that will cause those entities to be
deleted from the source environment), attach the domain to the new
deployment and register the entities you want. That is relatively quick
operation since no copy is needed.

Export domains/OVAs are targeted for different scenario - when you want to
*copy* you entities from one deployment to another. You export them
somewhere and than import them from that place.

[ovirt-users] trouble with hosted-engine vm.conf after upgrade to 4.2

2018-06-13 Thread Reznikov Alexei

Hi list!

I upgrade my ovirt test lab from 4.1.9 to 4.2.2, and i have trouble with
the hosted-engine...

I can not start the hosted engine with my vm.conf...

/hosted-engine --vm-start --vm-conf=/root/vm.conf/

/Command VM.getStats with args {'vmID':
'a19b9120-4f87-4a04-8cb6-c3e192a98052'} failed://
//(code=1, message=Virtual machine does not exist: {'vmId':

/

VM HE start is Ok, but without my parameter, i change emulated_machine
to *pc-i440fx-rhel7.5.0* in my vm.conf, but i see this:

/ps ax | grep Hosted/

/./

/r-key.aes -machine
//*pc-i440fx-rhel7.3.0*//,accel=kvm,usb=off,dump-guest-core=off -cpu
Nehalem -m size=2097152k,slots=16,maxmem=8388608k -realtime mlock=off
-smp 2,maxcpus=16,sockets=16,cores=1,/

/./

My ovirt packages:

vdsm-4.20.30-1.el7.x86_64

libvirt-3.9.0-14.el7_5.5.x86_64

qemu-kvm-ev-2.10.0-21.el7_5.3.1.x86_64

Centos 7.5.1804

This is critical for me, please help fix this!

Thanks, Alex.

[ovirt-users] Ovirt Nested in VMWare (Working approach)

2018-06-13 Thread RabidCicada
I worked through this previously and posted in IRC yesterday about
working around running ovirt nested under VMWare. I figured i'd post
it to the mail group so that it would be available in it's entirety
here for future reference:

The following gists explain the 3 major adjustments that have to be
made currently to get nested virt under vmware working:

https://gist.github.com/RabidCicada/993349b3a7eaf35637122f0122fdedb3
https://gist.github.com/RabidCicada/bc01eb0b13195faa26520c0fb666ec34
https://gist.github.com/RabidCicada/37ff6f1ed2afd8dd4edefac735536c69
https://gist.github.com/RabidCicada/40655db1582ca5d07c9bbf2c429cdd01

Hopefully it can save others the huge amount of time it took me to
figure it all out.

Specifically it's a problem with the --machine type at 3 major parts
of the vm creation for the hosted-engine.
1) You have to fix the virt-install to use --machine pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0
2) You have to fix the guestfish spinup of the partially configured vm
to use --machine pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0, where they edit the nic config
among other things
3) You have to tell vdsm on the node to use --machine pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0

I don't know the underlying reason why a --machine type >
pc-i440fx-rhel7.2.0 breaks the system but it ends up resulting in a
bios freeze.

Again, Hope this helps someone. Suggested only to use for a test/dev system.

2018-06-13 Thread femi adegoke
Since this is a single node gluster install, you have to add the gluster volume.

Log into the HE web gui
go to Storage, Storage Domains, click on "New Domain" (it's located at the top
right side)
Storage Type: select GlusterFS
Export Path: enter in this format "myserver.mydomain.com:/my/local/path"
Click ok

Wait for it to do it's thing

[ovirt-users] OVA export/import

2018-06-13 Thread RabidCicada
All,
I recently tried to used the OVA export/import functionality. It
seems I misunderstood the intentions. I expected OVA export/import to
be reciprocal functionalities. I expected what we export as OVA to be
importable as OVA in ovirt.

What I have found is the following:

* It seems OVA export does export an OVA, though the format is not
spec compliant
  * We use 'disk/' in the HostResource xml field instead of '/disk/'
for example in the ovf.
* It seems OVA import is intended specifically for VMWare OVA's?
* I thought I read about export domains being deprecated, and
incorrectly assumed the recently added OVA export/import was to make
things better for one off import/export.

Can anyone clarify the following:
* Is OVA import really just VMWare OVA's?
* Are we really not spec compliant with the OVA/OVF format as my
example above shows? OR do I misunderstand something?
* After spending my time yesterday, I recall now that the deprecation
of export domain is in favor of detaching and re-attaching ANY data
domain.
* What is the purpose of our OVA export if we ourselves indeed cannot
import our own OVA? Or can you tell me how we import our own if I'm
wrong.

Please feel free to overshare details :), as any context will help
prevent more confusion on my part.

[ovirt-users] Moving from thin to preallocated storage domains

2018-06-13 Thread Albl, Oliver
Hi all,

I have to move some FC storage domains from thin to preallocated. I would set
the storage domain to maintenance, convert the LUN from thin to preallocated on
the array, remove "Discard After Delete" from the advanced settings of the
storage domain and active it again. Is there anything else I need to take care
of?

All the best,
Oliver

2018-06-13 Thread Leo David
Finnally !!!
Femi, thank you so much !!! I wouldn't have been able do solve this
without your help.
So, just as info:
In this version ( iso ovirt-node-ng-installer-ovirt-4.2-2018053012 ) ,
multipah.conf seems to be alrady configured to blacklist all devices.
It already has configured :
# VDSM PRIVATE- as second line and,
blacklist {
devnode "*"
}

HE installation went fine, but after reboot the gluster volumes were not
present - glusterd daemon was not enabled at boot, so the ansible playbook
did not changed that.
Now, I am trying to figure out wat it would be the best procedure to create
a new gluster volume on sdc drive, and put some vms to run on it.
Cockpit UI won't let me, because its asking for 3 nodes and "No two hosts
can be the same" .
Should i just format the drive as xfs, mount it ( fstab ) under
/gluster_briks/spinning_storage, create the gluster volume from cli and
add it as a new storage domain ?
What it would be the best approach to accomplish this ?
Again, thank you very much !

That's better, but please run them in parallel.
Open two windows, run 'vmstat 1' in one of them, see that you get
close-to-zero
'bi', then run 'dd' in the other, see that 'bi' gets higher, wait a few
minutes,
then check oVirt metrics.

Thanks and good luck,

You only wrote 300 MB, are you sure it was enough to cause an actual
 write (and not cached)?

 Did you check vmstat/iostat?

Perhaps try reading instead of writing.

 dd if=/dev/somedev of=/dev/null

Gluster volumes are started, so I assume that the gluster part is fine.
Would'nt make more sense to add everything to black list, reboot the server
and continue with ovirt-engine vm setup ( and adding 10.10.8.111:/engine
for vm storage ) ?
ie:

blacklist {
devnode "*"
}

Thank you !

You keep reading virtual devices that read only from the kernel/memory...
Please try reading from your disk. It's likely /dev/sda, or you can check
using e.g. 'df /', 'lsblk', etc.

And please check with vmstat/iostat that you see the reads. If you don't,
try until you do. Only then check what oVirt has to say.

Not sure I understand. "Creating the file" - which one?

 Perhaps try something like:

 dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/myfile1

In any case, please test that the OS sees your IO. Use e.g. vmstat,
 iostat
or something like that. oVirt (and metrics) will only show what the OS
reports - if you see there '0', that's what you should get in metrics.

It's blacklist { not kblacklist (remove the "k")

run this command to find wwids: ls -la /dev/disk/by-id/

Is the existing gluster setup installed correctly?

Greg, thank you for the referral. I will post my question there.

Since oVirt uses spice it seemed like a good shot to ask fellow admins
here in the hope somebody has come across something alike.

Kind regards,

Dear all,

We are running the following setup:
ovirt-engine host:
- CentOS release 7.5.1804
- ovirt-engine-4.1.9.1-1.el7.centos.noarch
- spice-html5-0.1.7-1.el7.noarch

We have noticed problems with the Spice console. When it opens and
displays the information presented by the VM's console it is OK at
first. But as soon as any part of the display changes, that part
gets replaced by random pixelated noise.
For example I open the console of a standard CentOS server. When I
type something at the login prompt the text is invisible and
random pixels are displayed at the position of the blinking
cursor. Please see attached screenshot
spice-1-login_typing_and_cursor_waiting.png.

Please also see other the attached screenshots.
Login prompt after VM reboot: spice-2-login_after_boot.png
Login prompt after hitting Enter a few times:
spice-3-login_2x_enter.png

We have tried and succesfully reproduced the issue on OSX (Chrome,
FF, Safari) and Windows (Chrome, FF).
VNC works fine.

Why would this be happening? Help would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Mitja

2018-06-13 Thread Leo David
Thank you,
The playbook just finnished successfully.
Now:
1. Should I create the blacklist acordingly:
kblacklist {
wwid INTEL_SSDSCKHB120G4_BTWM65160025120B
wwid eui.0025385171b04d62
wwid SAMSUNG_MZ7GE960HMHP-000AZ_S1P8NYAG123827
}
- but not sure what to put as wwid

2. How to deploy self-hosted engine vm, since when I hit any of the "Hosted
engine" or "Hyperconverged" it does not recognize the already gluster
setup ?
3. Will I be able to create some future gluster volumes using the other
unused hdds ? From Cockpit, or again using gdeploy ?

I am really sorry if i put stupid questions, but i just don't understand
how to proceed further

Can you run command lsblk
What's your output?

What is the "-h" for?
[script1]
action=execute
ignore_script_errors=no
file=/usr/share/gdeploy/scripts/grafton-sanity-check.sh -d sdb -h

But now I am encountering this "invalid number format \"virt\" in option
\"brick-uid":
