[ovirt-users] Let's get oVirt in Stack Overflow's Open Source Advertising again

2018-02-22 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi all,

With Eldan's help, we have an advert for oVirt [1] suggested on Stack
Overflow's traditional Open Source Advertising campaign [2].

Like always, we need the upvotes to get it up there.

Want to see oVirt on Stack Overflow's sidebar again? Hope over and upvote.

Sure - create a custom role for your users (configure->roles->new), and
give it permissions only to your Cinder domain (storage->select the

Hi lists,

Thanks to Eldan, we have a community ad for oVirt proposed on Stack
Overflow [1].
Now, we need some upvotes (current threshold is 6) before SO starts serving
it.

Have a SO account?
Want to help?
Just drop by and upvote.

Have a great weekend,

Re: [ovirt-users] The number of LVs on the domain VPLEX_DATA_DOMAIN exceeded 300, you are approaching the limit where performance may degrade.

2017-05-14 Thread Allon Mureinik
The 300 is a rule-of-thumb number we benchmarked back in the day, and is
probably quite outdated. In fact, in oVirt 4.1.2, we intend to increase it
to 1000 [1].

If you don't want to wait till then, and you aren't suffering any
performance hits when creating/removing disks/snapshots on this domain, you
can increase it yourself by using the engine-config tool:

[~/ovirt-engine-home/] ./bin/engine-config -s AlertOnNumberOfLVs=1000

Not sure I understand the the issue - is this local storage (in the sense
that oVirt defines it as local, not in the sense of it being a drive on the
same host vdsm is running from) or glusterfs?

Could you add some logs please?

Re: [ovirt-users] Issue creating a new Domain

2014-10-26 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi Sean,

This error is usually associated either with a storage failure or a permissions
foobar on your newly created domain.
Could you please attach the logs from the ovirt engine and vdsm?

Also, what version are your working with?

The proposed VDSM patch should work, but it does not resolve the situation
properly wrt selinux.
A proper fix should be provided to the underlying layers (see BZ 1147923 for EL
and BZ 1147910 for Fedora).
I'd like to hear more voices here, but IMHO, not supporting enabled selinux
envs on EL7/F20 is a no-go for GA.

This bug requires two (simple) patches, both of which are acked and verified on
upstream/master.
I think they can be backported and merged by EOD, unless Daniel or Ravi (the
respective patch authors) see a problem I don't.

We're unable to confirm this issue (seems as though it's caused by a bug that
was there since 3.1, at least).
It's targeted for 3.5.1, and should not block the GA.

This is already MODIFIED.

This is an edge case of an edge case.
Although this technically is a regression, there's no real-world situation that
would lead to this,
and it should not block 3.5.0

I did some scrubbing here. The only two remaining storage issues are the ones
mentioned above, that are indeed blockers.

Re: [ovirt-users] Should we add 'cow' format disk in file domains in frontend UI ?

2014-09-14 Thread Allon Mureinik
Offhand, sounds both useful and easy to do.
I marked the BZ with 3.6.0, and we'll revisit when we plan the 3.6.0 version.

Of course, if someone wants to contribute patches *wink wink, hint hint*.

If we decide to move forward with this patch, we'll definitely provide
qemu-kvm-rhev in the repo - the concern was indeed for users who don't have
this enabled.
Unlike 3.5, the 3.4.z repo doesn't seem to provide any "3rd parties" that can't
be built from oVirt's sources - so, theoretically, it can be installed without
the repo enabled - and the discussion here is whether this is an interesting
usecase or not.

My personal tendency is to go forward (with a release note, as suggested), but
as noted, there is some disagreement (e.g., Dan's comment), so we're looking
for additional opinions.

[ovirt-users] qemu-kvm-rhev on EL machines for oVirt 3.4.z ?

2014-09-10 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi guys,

We've recently started shipping qemu-kvm-rhev in oVirt 3.5's repos and
requiring it by VDSM in order to allow oVirt users on EL server to enjoy the
live snapshot capability which isn't available by the default qemu-kvm
available for these machines [1].

On a different BZ, Sven raised the request to backport this to the 3.4.z stream
as well [2].

In the discussion on the patch [3], Dan raised the concern that 3.4.z is a
mature z-stream, and adding this dependency on resources.ovirt.org's repos will
effectively blocks all vdsm updates for users which don't have these repos
enabled in their production environments.

We'd like to get some more input from the community before deciding whether to
move forward with this or abandon the idea.

Thanks,
Allon

Upon further research, it seems as though we were able to solve this without a
manual procedure (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1132086).
This fix will be delivered as part of the engine's upgrade in 3.4.4 (and 3.5.0,
of course), so ultimately, no release notes are required.

This was discovered internally last week and should be solved by tomorrow.

[ovirt-users] oVirt 3.5 2 nd test day report

2014-07-29 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi everyone,

For this test day I revisited the two UX RFEs I looked at in the previous test
day:
Bug 987953 - OVIRT35 - [RFE] [oVirt] [webadmin] Tree doesn't refresh
Bug 1110566 - OVIRT35 - [RFE] when viewing a grid that contains only one item,
*automatically* select that item

I started out by verifying the bug I opened last time was indeed fixed:
Bug 1114990 - Search: Clusters main tab is not sorted by name by default

I then proceeded to play around with both features.
I found one bug regarding the tree's refresh:
Bug 1124407 - Adding a cluster partially collapses the tree

And a couple which weren't related to these changes:
Bug 1124375 - Can't search DCs according to compatibility version
Bug 1124378 - Can't sort DCs according to compatibility version
Bug 1124426 - Wrong sorting of DC's storage type

Re: [ovirt-users] Migrate between 3.3.4 and 3.4.1

This sounds a lot like a https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1069772
which we solved for 3.4.1.
I wonder if we should backport it to 3.3.z

Re: [ovirt-users] Add a Direct Lun via rest API (Oivrt 3.3.5)

2014-04-28 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi Gary,

Your are correct in your hunch - there's no need to specify size for a direct
lun.
However, you have a mistake in your XML - the lun storage clause should be
defined in a element, not .

[Users] What component to use when reporting bugs on engine-managed-domains?

2014-01-23 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi list,

I'm taking a look at engine-managed-domains as part of the oVirt 3.4 Test Day,
and was wondering what component I should use to report bugs on it.
The closest available component seems to be ovirt-engine-installer, as this is
a "setup" flow in some sense, but it doesn't really feel right.

Any better ideas?
Or, alternatively, is there any way to add an ovirt-engine-managed-domains
component to bugzilla?

Thanks,
Allon

For one snapshot? Are you sure?

What version are you using?
And on what storage?

You could just copy all three of your volumes.
A more robust way, though, would probably be to export the disk to an export
domain.

Unfortunately, not while the VM is still running. If you shut it down, you can
merge the snapshot back.
Go to VMs -> Snapshots -> select the snapshot you want to remove, and click
delete.

After some reassessment, this patch isn't s bad, and was backported to
3.3.1.
Keep your eyes open for the upcoming release :-)

Hi Jakub,

what exactly are you trying to achieve here?
Are you just trying to change the IP of your storage server, or do you really
need to copy all the data too?

Re: [Users] user can not create a snapshot

2013-06-11 Thread Allon Mureinik
The required action group is MANIPULATE_VM_SNAPSHOTS.
It can be found in the roles UserVmManager, SuperUser, ClusterAdmin and
DataCenterAdmin.

If that does not do the trick - check the user's quota - maybe he's out.

Subject: [Users] user can not create a snapshot

Hi,

I have a user with VmCreator rights in the datacenter. He can create, edit,
manipulate his own virtual macihnes, but he can not add a snapshot to his own
virtual machines. What rights do I have to give him also, so he can have the
snapshot functionality as well? Right now he does get a " Error while executing
action: User is not authorized to perform this action." message. The Virtual
machine is powered down at the time of taking a snapshot.

Thank You.

Generally speaking - yes, but it's probably a good idea to brainstorm about the
specific feature you had in mind on the mailing lists and/or have add feature
page to the wiki before bucking down and coding.

Re: [Users] NFS Export Doamin

2013-05-04 Thread Allon Mureinik
Frankly, the host status shouldn't depend on any domain status, as a series of
recent patches fixed.
I don't think got into oVirt 3.2, however.

I'm wondering if this work should be backported to 3.2.1/3.2.2, but it's quite
a major change, not sure the risk justifies it...

It's a new ability, regardless of AIO.
I'm suggesting that AIO could utilize it, since it will remove the dependency
on nfsd.

Re: [Users] NFS ISO DOmain

2013-04-23 Thread Allon Mureinik
Not completely on-topic, but somewhat related:
I just merged a couple of patches by Mark Wu (thanks Mark!) that remove the NFS
limitation for ISO domains, and allow creating them on any file-based domain.
Perhaps we'd like to allow the installer to create the ISO domain on local
storage?

2013-04-22 Thread Allon Mureinik
arg, I always think of the easiest things last.

I reproduced this exact error on my env when I chowned the SD's directory to
vdsm:kvm, but left the parent directories with no permissions.
Since your directory is /home/virtualisierungs/vms
please check the permissions for /home, /home/virtualisierungs and
/home/virtualisierungs/vms

2013-04-21 Thread Allon Mureinik
I'm not familiar with any specific XFS mount options that work better/worse,
but it all boils down to what you're trying to achieve.

BTW - why local storage?

Run and protect: connectStorageServer(domType=4,

Is it possible you created the directory on the engine's server instead of the

Re: [Users] Where is live block migration?

Hi nnex,

To add to Ofri's comment - Live Storage Migration only works on domains in the
same DC, so they must be of the same type - you cannot migrate a disk from an
NFS storage to a block device or vice versa.

In a nutshell - yes.

It can convert RHEL and windows guests running on Xen or ESX to KVM-based

Are you trying to re-use a directory you previously used for a different

Because I saw this error repeated in the log:

mStatus Class Name: org.ovirt.engine.core.vdsbroker.vdsbroker.StatusForXmlRpc

Seems like you some old .class files lying around, for some reason.
Have you tried manually removing your "target" dirs before building?

Hi Eric,

AFAIK, backing up the database should do the trick:

Premature CTRL+ENTER, sorry about that.

Can you verify your DB is up and running in a proper fashion?

Re: [Users] How to resize physical disk size with virt-p2v

2012-08-30 Thread Allon Mureinik
Hi Sven,Have you tried qemu-img?From: "Sven Knohsalla" To: users@ovirt.orgSent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 5:48:45 PMSubject: [Users] How to resize physical disk size with  virt-p2vHi,we’re currently using oVirt engine3.0 and have about 50 VMs successfully running ( thanks for your great work!!)  At the moment we do migrate ESX/KVM VMs and baremetal servers to oVirt. For p2v migration we’re using virt-p2v 0.87 (iso created from rpm virt-p2v-image-builder)Migration is working fine, but the vdisk size is accordingly to original physical hdd size. For example:Server with 500 GB HDD size, partitions (swap,/,boot) shrinked to ~50 GB.(df –h will show only 50 GB for / )  First I thought, shrinking partitions of the server will help out,But unfortunately, the tool is using the whole hard disk space to convert (using dd ?)…and so we have a successfully migrated VM in oVirt with 500GB vHDD size. Is there any way or alternative software we can use for P2V migration? Thanks in advance,Sven.  Sven Knohsalla | Systems Administration Netbiscuits - Enabling the mobile experience.  Update: Netbiscuits is hiring mobile specialists in sales, marketing and development     Recent awards & accoladesMobile Entertainment Award Winner 2011Deloitte Technology Fast 50 2011, ranked #28Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award 2011  Register Court: Local Court Kaiserslautern | Commercial Register ID: HR B 3604Management Board: Guido Moggert, Michael Neidhoefer, Christian Reitz, Martin Suess ___Users mailing listUsers@ovirt.orghttp://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users___
