Re: [ovirt-users] Glusterfs storage

If you are managing the gluster volume through ovirt, you could just
select the volume in the ui and click "Optimize for virt store". It does
the job of setting the required parameters for the volume.

Thanks Aharon,

After a couple of hours, the chown 36:36 did the trick, now I have the domain
up.

This is a good way to set those perms and make them stick:

gluster volume set $yourvol storage.owner-uid 36
gluster volume set $yourvol storage.owner-gid 36

Subject: [ovirt-users] Glusterfs storage

Hi,

I have setup up 2 hosts, host1 with hosted engine, and on host 2, since I
have a spare disk, I want to setup a glusterfs domain storage.
I'm using Centos7 and ovirt 3.5.1.
The 2 hosts and hosted engine are up and running.
How can I configure the glusterfs storage?
I installed glusterfs server on host2:
glusterfs-api-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-fuse-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-libs-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-rdma-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-server-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64
glusterfs-cli-3.6.2-1.el7.x86_64

Do I need first configure a Volume with a brick? I tried that but no success.
Also tried to ad a Data domains of type glusterfs but no success.
What am I missing?

Thanks

AFAIK correct.

Right.

There is a "Enable Virt Service" flag but the options is selected and
greyed out. So I'm not able to disable it.

Mhm this is sad. I'm not aware of any bug tracking this, will you open
one? It's also possible I missed it, there are too many bugs to
remember them all.

This can happen if there are any VMS in the cluster you are trying to edit.

Do you have any VMS running on the cluster?

If you create cluster with just 'Enable Gluster Service' selected, you
should be able to manage your gluster hosts. Here the hosts need not to
have any virtualization stuff in it.

Re: [ovirt-users] all hosts non-operational

2014-12-22 Thread Kanagaraj
Looks like there is some network connectivity issue between the hosts.
Due to this, some hosts might not aware of the existence of the volume,
hence its removed from ovirt. Do you see any errors in gluster log file
when gluster commands fail?

Thanks,
Kanagaraj

Hello,

After testing replacing a failed Gluster brick (shared ovirt/gluster)
ALL hosts in the cluster go non-responsive, storage drops off etc.
Now, gluster peer status fails, can’t set any volume options, the
volume randomly drops out of oVirt (was created from oVirt), log in
oVirt dashboard shows the entry that the volume was deleted (but is
there). Any gluster commands just hang. The combination of Ovirt &
Gluster seems stable until there’s a problem, then literally
everything just grinds to a halt. All VM’s go down, datacenter & hosts
go non-responsive and the whole thing is broke.. Any ideas on what we
should be looking for?

can the import be safely done while the Gluster installation is live and
hosting files?

That article is about Ovirt 3.2, is it safe to assume the same procedure
holds true for recent versions?

should be - iirc gluster is always in "learn from storage" mode.

Import will not cause any problems to the services which serves the
data. There is no reboot involved if you are importing the hosts to
'gluster-only' cluster. During the host initialization process, glusterd
management daemon will be restarted and ovirtmgmt network bridge will be
created.

Do you see any errors in
/var/log/glusterfs/etc-glusterfs-glusterd.vol.log or vdsm.log when the
service is trying to start automatically after the reboot?

In both the environment glusterd enabled for next bootbut it's

Please help me to find the workaround here if can not resolve it...as
without this the Host machine can not connect after rebootthat

Corresponding error messages in vdsm.log should help here.

Do you see any command failure messages in vdsm.log or supervdsm.log?

Hi Nathan,

Could you please check if glusterd is running on the hosts you
are trying to install ? This issue occurs mostly due to glusterd
being stopped on the nodes. Please start glusterd by running the
command 'service glusterd start' and try activating the hosts.

Hope this helps.

Re: [ovirt-users] remove a lost gluster based datacenter

2014-07-11 Thread Kanagaraj Mayilsamy
Looks like the cluster has both virt and gluster services enabled. Otherwise a
host part of gluster-cluster cannot be a SPM.

I am not sure about the standard procedure to removed a SPM host.

Once SPM is disabled, you should be able to remove all the gluster hosts
forcefully.

Thanks,

I am could not remove the "dead" gluster based datacenter from ovirt.

Move all the gluster hosts to maintenance. And then select all of them
and click 'Remove', then select the 'Force' checkbox and Ok.

I don't want to reinstall the whole ovirt because I have a lot of vm
on the local datacenter.

So, how can I remove a complety dead datacenter from ovirt?

Re: [ovirt-users] probing peers in gluster after installing hosts

2014-06-02 Thread Kanagaraj
- selecting the 'enable gluster service' in later stage(after the hosts
are added) doesn't do anything. As you said, this could be a nice
feature though.
- 'gluster peer probe' is used to form a logical cluster. I don't think
having the hosts from different clusters to form a gluster-cluster is
the right way.

Hi all,

I created 3 clusters in unique datacenter. I installed my hosts to the
first one after activating the gluster service in the cluster tab. A
expected otopi installed then the vdsm-gluster rpm and everything were
ok for this first cluster.
The other ones weren't initially gluster ready and I wanted to
activate the service after installing the host (so they were without
vdsm-gluster package). But checking that item didn't do anything for
these hosts, so that I had to manually install vdsm-gluster package.
Then, when creating a volume, the UI told me that hosts couldn't
communicate. So I had to manually probe them. This leads me to that
question : is it an expected behaviour? The whole gluster job
(installing appropriated package and probing peers in the cluster)
should be done thanks to the UI cluster tab "gluster service".
A last question : why isn't it possible to probe host on different
clusters in the same datacenter, could be very useful.

Re: [ovirt-users] post glusterfs 3.4 -> 3.5 upgrade issue in ovirt (3.4.0-1.fc19): bricks unavailable

2014-05-21 Thread Kanagaraj

engine.log and vdsm.log?

This can mostly happen due to following reasons
- "gluster volume status vm-store" is not consistently returning the
right output

- ovirt-engine is not able to identify the bricks properly

Anyway, engine.log will give better clarity.

It reports "Up but all bricks are down"

This would seem to be impossible. Gluster on the nodes itself

As I mentioned the vms are running happily
initially the ISOs volume had the same issue. I did a volume start
and stop on the volume as it was not being activly used and that
cleared up the issue in the console. However, as I have VMs running
I can't so this for the vm-store volume.

bricks, then detach peers, probe them, add bricks again, bring the

As you said above, if you have volumes in the cluster, volumes needs to

Is there any basic check so that I cannot do this at all?
Any tip?

http://www.gluster.org/2013/09/ovirt-3-3-glusterized/, using POSIXFS
as I use CentOs and not Fedora.
The problem is, I'm supposed to see a "Gluster Enable Service" in the
configuration of cluster but I don't see it. When I first setup ovirt
engine, I selected the "virt" Application_Mode. When I try
"engine-setup", I don't have the question anymore.

I changed it in database : in the vdc_options table, the option
ApplicationMode is now 255 and AllowClusterWithVirtGlusterEnabled is
True.

Then I restarted ovirt-engine. However, I still don't see this option...

This should have worked.

You could clear the browser cache and try again?

Recommended way is to select 'Both' for 'ApplicationMode' during
engine-setup.

But if you want to do this after engine-setup, you need to tweak a
database entry. You could find an option_name called 'ApplicationMode'
in the vdc_options table, change the value of the field to 255, then
restart ovirt-engine service. Now you should able to manage both virt
and gluster in oVirt.

Just set check the gluster checkbox on the cluster edit page, put the
node/host into maintenance and reinstall it. It will install the
gluster bits and you'll be able to add volumes.

This is possible only if oVirt is installed in 'Both' (Virt+Gluster) mode.

Yes, you can, using the Import cluster option when you create a
cluster with gluster services enabled (Do not enable virt services on
cluster)

This will install vdsm on the hosts, but should not affect the
gluster setup in any other way.

Hello Sahina,

I've added my existing gluster hosts as well as the VM running the
ovirt-engine. It installed vdsm on this VM, set up a bridge called
ovirtmgmt and rebooted it. Can you assure me this will not happen with
the hosts I have in production. For the moment I cut access for ovirt
to the gluster hosts.. my heart just froze when I saw that reboot. :)

It is not supposed to reboot if you have created the cluster with
'Enable Gluster service' checked and 'Enable Virt Service' un-checked.

Re: [Users] Gluster Volume created and deleted repeatedly

2013-08-25 Thread Kanagaraj
Looks like your hosts are in an inconsistent state. If you look at the
below output, one host reports 2 peers and the another one reports 1
peer. Also if you look at the 'gluster peer status' from the second
host, it says 'Disconnected', it means it could not communicate with the
gluster in the peer(probably glusterd is down). This also leads to one
host reporting there is a volume but the other one says there are no
volumes.

oVirt engine pulls the volume information from any one of the hosts.
Thats why you see the volume gets added and removed.

Its better to fix this inconsistencies before doing further activities.
Make sure 'glusterd' is running and no firewall rules are blocking the
communication between the glusterd across hosts.

What version of glusterfs in installed in the hosts?

PS: You can ask gluster specific questions in
/gluster-us...@gluster.org/ mailing list.

Re: [Users] Host Agent-35 moved to Non-Operational state as host does not meet the cluster's minimum CPU level. Missing CPU features : model_Penryn

2013-08-16 Thread Kanagaraj Mayilsamy
The first question would be,
1)Do you want to use oVirt from managing gluster storage
(or)
2)You want to manage both your storage and virtualization

for case 1)

You can create a new cluster(or modify the existing one) with 'Enable Gluster
Service' and do not select 'Enable Virt Service'. Then add hosts to that
cluster, you won't see any errors complaining missing CPU features as this
cluster is not meant for Virt. Also gluster needs the machines to be x86 arch
and nothing else.

for case 2)

Here you would need create a cluster with both 'Gluster' and 'Virt' services
enabled. The CPU you select here should match with the CPU the hosts are having.

Re: [Users] vdsm-gluster is installed but host deployment report error: Cannot locate gluster packages

what is your repo url?

http://bits.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.4.0alpha3/ is working fine for
me.

Can you try the following on the host.

- remove the existing gluster repos
- and execute this $ yum-config-manager --add
http://bits.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.4.0alpha3/
- yum search glusterfs - this should list all the glusterfs packages

If the above works fine, you try repeating the install process.
If there are any more errors, please attach the ovirt-host-deploy log file for
further analysis.

gid and uid options are enough to make a gluster volume ready for virt store.
The third option sets a group(called as virt group) of options on the volume
mainly related to performance tuning. To make this option work, you have to
copy the file
https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/blob/master/extras/group-virt.example to
/var/lib/glusterd/groups/ and name it as virt. Now you can click on 'Optimize
for virt store' again to set the virt group. Setting this group option
recommended but not necessary to make the gluster volume to be used as virt
store.

I am not sure about the below errors, other people in the list can help you out.

Do you have the glusterfs rpms installed in your nodes? I think
glusterfs rpms are not packaged by default in the ovirt-node-iso, in
this case you may need install the rpms manually.

If you still face the problem after the above check, please attach the

On the second node I configured Optional password for adding Node through oVirt

On the engine when adding a new Host I add the values to Name, Address, and
Root Password , and than get this error:
Error: Cannot add host. SSH authentication failed, verify authentication
parameters are correct (Username/password, public key etc). You may refer to
the engine.log file for further details.

I notice that I cannot login as root on the second node, so how can I add a
node through oVirt Engine UI if it asks for a root password?

What am I doing wrong?

My yumfoo isn't that good so I don't know how to force it. Besides I
tried through yum localinstall but it will revert when yum update is
run. It looks like it thinks that 3.3.1 is newer than 3.4

The problem is that, released glusterfs rpms in fedora repository are
of the form 3.3.1-8, whereas the ones from above QA release are
v3.4.0qa7. I think because of the "v" before 3.4, these are
considered as lower version, and by default yum picks up the rpms
from fedora repository.

The 'v' is 99.9% the culprit. I had 3.4.0qa6 before I wiped and just
had a look that folder and repo doesn't have the 'v' in front of it.

Thats correct.

[kanagaraj@localhost ~]$ rpmdev-vercmp glusterfs-3.3.1-8.fc18.x86_64

glusterfs-3.3.1-8.fc18.x86_64 > glusterfs-v3.4.0qa7-1.el6.x86_64

Is there someone on this list that has the 'powers' to change that ??

Re: [Users] gluster volume creation error

2013-01-21 Thread Kanagaraj Mayilsamy
Hi Jithin,

By looking at the logs, looks like you already had a volume named 'vol1' in
the gluster and you have tried to create another volume with the same name from
the UI. Thats why you were able to see the volume 'vol1' even after the
creation was failed.

I am not sure which version of ovirt-engine you are using. The recent
releases(3.2) and the upstream code currently have the support for reflecting
the old volumes in the UI even though there were created via UI or directly
from CLI. With this change vol1 should have appeared in the UI even before the
creation.

So it looks like there are no issues with the creation of volume. I am not
familiar with the mount issues, some one else will help you out.

Thanks,
Kanagaraj

- start with a clean engine-setup

- add the two hosts, went OK.
- add a Volume, gluster-data, gets created OK, BUT the Create Volume

Looking at the logs I see that the volume is created, st01 is used,
st02 gets the message, creation is returning Succes but it looks

We have an issue with locking while creating a volume, fix for this

I still might have the vdsm logs or else I can replay it to generate

Is the workaround I used a viable one? (restarting ovirt-engine)

We are waiting for the fix to be approved.

I can't think of any workaround for this now. After restarting also you
will have the same issue while creating the next volume in the cluster.
Other operations like start/stop/add-bricks will work after the restart.

Re: [Users] problem adding a gluster storage domain.

2012-11-29 Thread Kanagaraj Mayilsamy
I am not sure how you have created a gluster volume with name as 'volume'. In
gluster you cannot create volume with name 'volume'.
If i try to do that, gluster says '"volume" cannot be the name of a volume'.

Can you replace 'volume' with actual volume name while creating storage domain
and repeat the steps?
something like: 192.168.77.107:/test_vol or localhost:/test_vol

# /usr/bin/sudo -n /usr/bin/mount -t glusterfs -o vers=3 localhost:/volume
/rhev/data-center/mnt/localhost\:_volume
unknown option vers (ignored)

I can mounted when I have created using gluster's command.

# gluster volume create test_vol replica 2 transport tcp 192.168.77.107:/test
192.168.77.108:/test
Creation of volume test_vol has been successful. Please start the volume to
access data.

# gluster volume start test_vol
Starting volume test_vol has been successful
# mount.glusterfs localhost:/test_vol /mnt

# df -h | grep test_vol
localhost:/test_vol 50G 2.2G 45G 5% /mnt

Have tried mounting the gluster volume? (to make sure problem is not there in
gluster) Something like 'mount -t glusterfs localhost:/volume /tmp/volume'.

You could execute '/usr/bin/sudo -n /usr/bin/mount -t glusterfs -o vers=3
localhost:/volume /rhev/data-center/mnt/localhost:_volume' and see what
happens.

vdsm.log? (from 'Use Host')

Possible checklist:
- all the bricks of the volume should have 36:36 permission
- 'Use Host' should have gluster client packages
- you could try without passing any mount options(vers=3)

Cluster #2 [Virtualized] Enable Ovirt Service [no] & Enable Gluster

Have tried this several Times as full gluster working setup, empty
nodes and oVirt agent nodes. No luck.
Did you create any gluster volumes in Cluster #2, are you seeing any
failures there?

If that's succeeded you can use the gluster volume for two purposes

1. Normal Storage
- you can mount the gluster volume from any of nodes(the node could be
any host and need not be part of the gluster cluster). Should have
gluster client packages installed if you want mount the volume using
gluster native, alternatively you can mount the volume as nfs also.

 mount -t glusterfs HOSTNAME-OR-IPADDRESS:/VOLNAME MOUNTDIR
here the HOSTNAME could be any one of your gluster nodes.
Example: mount -t glusterfs server1:/test-volume /mnt/glusterfs

2. Storage for VMs

-When you want to use gluster as a an underlying storage for VM's, you
can't simply have a gluster cluster and use it as it is. The gluster
volume can be used as an underlying storage for the VMs. Select the
volume you want to use, click on 'Optimize for Virt' to change the brick
permissions on the nodes(kvm:vdsm).

-Make sure you Data Center is PosixFS complaint. Create a new Storage
domain and select the storage type as PosixFS. for 'Use Host' field
select any one of your hypervisor fields, for path
'hostname:/volumename' (hostname-any one of your gluster node), and Vfs
Type - gluster. Now you will see the storage domain is created on top of
a gluster volume. Now you can use this Storage Domain for your VMs.
Don't forget to install gluster client packages in your hypervisor
nodes(Cluster #1), this is needed because the gluster volume will be
mounted in the selected hypervisor node('Use Host').

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Best,
Peter

Any indication or pointer on how to mount gluster cluster as the only
storage for ovirt would be of great help.

Re: [Users] Speakers Needed: Upcoming Workshops

2012-09-05 Thread Kanagaraj

Hi All,

I would like to give a session on Overview of Webadmin and UI
frameworks in Bangalore oVirt Workshop. I will be starting with an
introduction about the frameworks GWT, GWTP, GIN and MVP. And will be
explaining about different modules, layers, communication between
frontend and backend, techniques behind the search and auto-completion,
bookmarks. Finally about the different modes supported by oVirt and.

About myself, i am part of Storage Development team in Bangalore, and
currently working on the Gluster related features in oVirt. I am taking
care of all the gluster related UI works. Sometimes I do work on backend
and rest-api as well. I have around 2.5 years of experience in
