Re: [ovirt-users] Removing Snapshot sub tasks

2014-05-25 Thread Meital Bourvine
Hi,

I'll try to explain - I hope that I'll get it right :)

Lets say that you have a vm with one disk, and you create a snapshot - what it
actually does is creating another disk and start writing to it from this point.
Now lets say that you create another snapshot now - again, it'll create another
disk and start writing to it.
Now if you want to remove the first snapshot, you need to merge the information
that was written on this snapshot, so you won't loose data in the second
snapshot.

I'm just wondering why there is a need to perform merge ?

Re: [ovirt-users] How to have this information?

2014-05-05 Thread Meital Bourvine
Hi,

You can get the information via snmp - here you can find some useful OIDs [1].

If I were you, I would have considered monitoring the VMs with zenoss [2]
(which uses snmp and already has all relevant OIDs).
It has a python api, so for creating the web page - I would have probably use
django [3] with zenoss' python api.

With that being said, there might be a way that I'm not aware about to get this
information from ovirt.

But if your storage domain contains only 1 FC lun, then listing the disks on

 Hello all,

I 'm having problems when I want to import a new virtual machine or create a
 new one from a template.

Every virtual machine I have running is unresponsive when I try to create a
new virtual machine with the import or from template.

I'm running a oVirt engine on a Centos 6.5 minimal installation which also
function as a NFS server. It has 6 NIC's available, 32 GB of RAM and 2 Quad
 cores.
My node has 2 NIC's, 64 GB of RAM and 2 Six cores.

How should I configure my network for optimal performance or how can I check
why my virtual machines are non responsive. I don't see much CPU activity or
 disk access at that moment.

 Kind regards.

Subject: [Users] Ovirt 3.4rc + Qemu Live snapshot : Problem to delete a
 Snapshot

 Hello,

 I upgraded to Ovirt 3.4rc allinone on centos6, and I compiled/installed
the qemu-kvm-rhev to be able to take live snapshots.

Taking the snapshot is OK, but I would like to delete them, and the
button and the menu are disabled (grey) until I shutdown the VM.

Once powered off, actions are available, and I'm able to delete snapshots.
This is the expected behaviour.

When looking the Snapshot Actions Matrix:
 http://www.ovirt.org/Live_Snapshots

Is the Revert operation needed to delete a snapshot ? (Deleting a
snapshot file implies to write changes from the snapshot file to the
parent file, looks to be Commit for me).
As far as I understand, revert means to go back to the point that you took the
snapshot,
while delete means to stay at the current point of time but deleting the option
to go back.

If not, should I have to upgrade something else, like libvirt, to be
 able to delete snapshots?
No.

 Thanks in advance

 Eric

As far as I understand, the idea is to automatically get the reviewers names,

  Hi

I'd like to contribute (within GSOC) in idea: Gerrit add potential
  reviewers.

Maybe at first I’ll introduce myself.
I'm Tomek, student from Poland. I study Computer Science at University of
Wroclaw. The next year will be last year of my first degree study, I hope.
As a python programmer I'm working since one year at Nokia Solutions and
Networks (don't worry I intend to change my job to another or to
participation at GSOC). Every day at work and school I'm using version
control system (Git and SVN). At work we were using to Gerrit as a review
system but currently we're using JIRA to report review statuses.
I love spend my free time in mountains (mainly polish - Tatras mountains).
  That's all about me.

I've got a few questions about project description.
Please tell me if my problem's understanding is good or not.
We need to add a few flags/methods to git review module. This flags should
allow to add potential reviewers in gerrit.
  So:
Let's assume that we've got special flags for this operations. What's next?
  1. In gerrit system we need to add special place for potential reviewers?
  2. Potential reviewers should agree that they want to review?
  3. We can have more than one accepted reviewer?

 Hi Tomasz,
I'm not sure i understood exactly what you mean by 'potential reviewers'.
do want gerrit (hook?) to automatically add reviewers to a patch according to
 the code sent?
so in fact you'll have a place somewhere for mapping code specific
 developers?

cause if you mean by adding reviewers to a patch, that's easily done by just
clicking the '+' sign on each patch.
those reviewers should have logged in at least once to gerrit.ovirt.org in
order to be in the list of potential viewers,
and they don't require any special permissions to review with +1/-1 any patch
 sent.
you can add as many reviewers as you want to a patch.

 does that answer your question?

 Eyal.

I know above questions might seem chaotic but I think answers allow me to
  better understanding Yours needments

  Best regards
  Tomasz Kolek

Subject: [Users] Data Center Non Responsive / Contending

 Hi everyone,
I'm asking for help again as testing my setup I put myself in a
situation in which I can't get out.

Layout: two hosts, an iSCSI storage, the engine installed as a
regular KVM guest on another host (external to the oVirt setup). All
 CentOS 6.5, oVirt 3.4.0beta3.
One DC (Default), one Cluster (Default), default storage type iSCSI.
Moreover, ISO domain is another external KVM guest exposing an NFS
share; Export Domain is in fact a VM in this Cluster.

 This is a preproduction setup.
Yesterday all was running fine until I needed to do some hardware
 maintenance.
So I decided to put the two hosts in maintenance from the webadmin
then shutdown them in the usual way. Engine was left operational.
Later i booted again one host, waited some time then tried to activate
it (from the webadmin) without success. Even switching on the second
 host didn't change anything.
Now the Data Center status toggles between Contending and Non Responsive.

None of the hosts is SPM and if I choose Select as SPM in the
webadmin the result is this popup:
 --
  Operation Canceled
 --
Error while executing action: Cannot force select SPM: Storage Domain
 cannot be accessed.
-Please check that at least one Host is operational and Data Center state is
 up.
 --

The two hosts are operational but the DC isn't up (downpointing red
arrow - Non Responsive, hourglass - Contending).

Storage domains are in Unknown state and if I try to Activate the
Master Data Domain its status becomes Locked and then it fails with
 these events:
. Invalid status on Data Center Default. Setting status to Non Responsive
. Failed to activate Storage Domain dt02clu6070 (Data Center Default) by
 admin

Connectivity seems OK. iSCSI connectivity seems OK.

I'm almost certain that if I had left one host active I would have had
 zero problems.
But I also think shutting down the full system should not be a problem.

In the end I restarted the ovirt-engine service without results (as
 expected).

 Any thought? Logs needed?

 TIA,
 Giorgio.

 Subject: [Users] Migration Failed

 Dear all,

I added a new host to our ovirt. Everything went good, exept in the beginnen
there was a problem with the firmware of the FibreCard but that is solved
(maybe relevant to the issue coming up ;-) ), host is green en up now. But
when I tried to migrate a machine for testing purpose to see if everythin
was ok, I get the following error in the engine.log and the migration fails:

 Hello,

I 'm starting to set up an ovirt enviroment to provide our test users a free
 but decent setup.

I have two servers and I would like to use one for NFS storage because of the
availability of 1 Tb and the the other server only as a node. I'm not sure
where to install the ovirt-engine on.

The NFS server has two quadcores and 32 Gb of RAM and 6 NIC's

The Node has two sixcores and 64 Gb of RAM and only 2 NIC's

 Kind regards.

However now I 'm puzzeled what I should install on my node. A minimal
installation with nfs support, a desktop for managing the

 Kind regards.

  Hi Jimmy,

As far as I know, scientific linux isn't supported by ovirt.

IIUC it's based on CentOS / RHEL so it may work.

If you don't support Scientific Linux, then I would recommend not
defaulting
the DIST to Fedora and instead searching for the specific supported

Future-wise, Scientific Linux *may* become a CentOS variant in Red

Hi Jimmy,

As far as I know, scientific linux isn't supported by ovirt.

But you can always try submitting a patch ;)

 Hi Folks,

 I've found a bug in ovirt-release-11.0.0. In ovirt-release.spec
#Handling EL exception only (for now)
if grep -qFi 'CentOS' /etc/system-release; then
  DIST=EL
elif grep -qFi 'Red Hat' /etc/system-release; then
  DIST=EL
 fi

This causes all kinds unhappiness on Scientific Linux :) Perhaps another
 elif line can be added.

 Cheers,
 Jimmy Dorff

 Hi Nir,

I have tried approving the host after executing setenforce 0 on the host.

This time the error in the Management Events says - Installation Failed.
Unable to Parse the Host key.

 What is causing this?

 Thanks for your help.

  Hi Meital,

There isn't any logs in the folder - /var/log/ovirt-engine/host-deploy

When I tried to ssh from the Engine to the Host I get the error message -
Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer .

service sshd status in the Host shows - fatal: Write permission denied.

Being able to login to the host using ssh is required for installing
a host, and required for soft-fencing feature. You should fix your host
 configuration.

One direction I would check is selinux issues. Try to disabe selinux and
 check
if the login issue is fixed, and check /var/log/messages for selinux warnings
 during the login.

Subject: [Users] Nodes lose storage at random

 Hi All,

We're seeing some weird issues in our ovirt setup. We have 4 nodes connected
and an NFS (v3) filestore (FreeBSD/ZFS).

Once in a while, it seems at random, a node loses their connection to
storage, recovers it a minute later. The other nodes usually don't lose
their storage at that moment. Just one, or two at a time.

We've setup extra tooling to verify the storage performance at those moments
and the availability for other systems. It's always online, just the nodes
 don't think so.

 The engine tells me this:

 2014-02-18 11:48:03,598 WARN

The export and data domain live over NFS. There's another domain, ISO, that
lives on the engine machine, also shared over NFS. That domain doesn't have
 any issue at all.

Attached are the logfiles for the relevant time period for both the engine
server and the node. The node by the way, is a deployment of the node ISO,
 not a full blown installation.

Any clues on where to begin searching? The NFS server shows no issues nor
anything in the logs. I did notice that the statd and lockd daemons were not
running, but I wonder if that can have anything to do with the issue.

2014-02-18 Thread Meital Bourvine
Hi Johan,

Can you please run something like this on the spm node?
while true; do echo `date; ps ax | grep -i remotefilehandler | wc -l`
/tmp/handler_num.txt; sleep 1; done

When it'll happen again, please stop the script, and write here the maximum
number and the time that it happened.

Also, please check if process_pool_max_slots_per_domain is defined in
/etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf, and if so, what's the value? (if it's not defined there,
the default is 10)

Thanks!

To follow up on this: The setup has only ~80 VM's active right now. The 2
bugreports are not in scope for this setup, the issues occur at random, even
when there's no activity (create/delete VM's) and there are only 4
 directories in / rhev/data-center/mnt/.

Hi All,

We're seeing some weird issues in our ovirt setup. We have 4 nodes
connected
and an NFS (v3) filestore (FreeBSD/ZFS).

Once in a while, it seems at random, a node loses their connection to
storage, recovers it a minute later. The other nodes usually don't lose
their storage at that moment. Just one, or two at a time.

We've setup extra tooling to verify the storage performance at those
moments
and the availability for other systems. It's always online, just

Hi,

Can you please open a bug about KeyError: 'path'?

What error did you get while trying to connect with console (vnc)?
Did you try changing it to spice and see what happens?

Btw, I can see on the dest host this error (on createVm?):

Subject: [Users] Problems with migration on a VM and not detected by gui

 Hello,
passing from 3.3.3rc to 3.3.3 final on fedora 19 based infra.
 Two hosts and one engine.
 Gluster DC.

 I have 3 VMs: CentOS 5.10, 6.5, Fedora 20

 Main steps:

 1) update engine with usual procedure
 2) all VMs are on one node; I put into maintenance the other one and
 update it and reboot
 3) activate the new node and migrate all VMs to it.

From webadmin gui point of view it seems all ok.
Only strange thing is that the CentOS 6.5 VM has no ip shown, when
usually it has becuse of ovrt-guest-agent installed on it

So I try to connect to its console (configured as VNC).
But I get error (the other two are ok and they are spice)
Also, I cannot ping or ssh into the VM so there is indeed some problem.

I didn't connect since 30th January so I don't knw if any probem
 arised before today.

 From the original host
 /var/log/libvirt/qemu/c6s.log

 I will do. Which component?
vdsm.
Thanks! :)
during migration itself the two nodes was not aligned.
In this case on source host I had 3.3.3rc packages such as
 vdsm-4.13.3-1.fc19.x86_64
 and
 kernel-3.12.8-200.fc19.x86_64

On dest I had already updated packages (also fedora ones) such as:
 vdsm-4.13.3-3.fc19.x86_64
 and
 kernel-3.12.9-201.fc19.x86_64

Instead libvirt was the same on both:
 libvirt-1.0.5.9-1.fc19.x86_64
 qemu-kvm-1.4.2-15.fc19.x86_64

What error did you get while trying to connect with console (vnc)?
I get unable to connect but sorry this was my fault. I'm using
SPiceProxy because from my client I cannot connect to port 5900 of
 hypervisors.
I was also testing some days ago the vnc protocol, but obviously it
doesn't use the SPiceProxy feature.. ;-)
on my client I have in fact, as expected:
 tcp0 1 10.4.23.21:5185610.4.4.58:5900 SYN_SENT

Going into a web console from a server that is in the same network of
hypervisors I can see the vnc console and the guest problem seems
during boot, apparently since 23rd of January... so it is normal I
 can't ping it.. ;-)
I will investigate at this point the reason of the problem and report...
 see screenshot:
 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvejFybE94WmJfQWM/edit?usp=sharing

Did you try changing it to spice and see what happens?
SO it was not a vnc problem at all apparently.
Anyway I think I can change console type only if VM is powered off, correct?
Yes.

What's the output of `lsof | wc -l`?
What's the output of `ulimit -a` for the same user that oVirt runs as?

Checking according to the blog I'm not even close to the limit from

 Hi Dafna,

 Thanks.

The vdsm logs are quite large, so I've only attached the logs for the
pause of the VM called Babbage on the 19th of Jan.

As for snapshots, Babbage has one from June 2013 and Reports has two
 from June and Oct 2013.

 I'm using FC storage, with 11 VM's and 3 nodes/hosts, 9 of the 11 VM's
 have thin provisioned disks.

Please shout if you'd like any further info or logs.

 Thank you.

 Regards.

 Neil Wilson.

  Thanks for the replies guys,

Looking at my two VM's that have paused so far through the oVirt GUI
the following sizes show under Disks.

  VM Reports:
Virtual Size 35GB, Actual Size 41GB
Looking on the Centos OS side, Disk size is 33G and used is 12G with
  19G available (40%) usage.

  VM Babbage:
Virtual Size is 40GB, Actual Size 53GB
On the Server 2003 OS side, Disk size is 39.9Gb and used is 16.3G, so
  under 50% usage.

Do you see any issues with the above stats?

Then my main Datacenter storage is as follows...

  Size: 6887 GB
  Available: 1948 GB
  Used: 4939 GB
  Allocated: 1196 GB
  Over Allocation: 61%

Could there be a problem here? I can allocate additional LUNS if you
feel the space isn't correctly allocated.

Apologies for going on about this, but I'm really concerned that
something isn't right and I might have a serious problem if an
  important machine locks up.

  Thank you and much appreciated.

this is configurable though so you can change it to less than 10% if you
  like.

to answer the second question, vm's will not pause on ENOSpace error if
  they
run out of space internally but only if the external storage cannot be
consumed. so only if you run out of space in the storage and and not if
  vm
runs out of space in its on fs.

Does the error VM babbage has paused due to no Storage space error
mean the main storage domain has run out of storage, or that the VM
  has run out?

Both VM's appear to have been running on node01 when they were paused.
  My vdsm versions are all...

  vdsm-cli-4.13.0-11.el6.noarch
  vdsm-python-cpopen-4.13.0-11.el6.x86_64
  vdsm-xmlrpc-4.13.0-11.el6.noarch
  vdsm-4.13.0-11.el6.x86_64
  vdsm-python-4.13.0-11.el6.x86_64

  Hi Dan,

Sorry for only coming back to you now.
The VM's are thin provisioned. The Server 2003 VM hasn't run out of
disk space there is about 20Gigs free, and the usage barely grows as
the VM only shares printers. The other VM that paused is also on thin
provisioned disks and also has plenty space, this guest is running
Centos 6.3 64bit and only runs basic reporting.

After the 2003 guest was rebooted, the network card showed up as
unplugged in ovirt, and we had to remove it, and re-add it again in
order to correct the issue. The Centos VM did not have the same issue.

I'm concerned that this might happen to a VM that's quite critical,
  any thoughts or ideas?

The only recent changes have been updating from Dreyou 3.2 to the
official Centos repo and updating to 3.3.1-2. Prior to updating I
  haven't had this issue.

  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Pausing happens when the VM has an IO error or runs out of space on

experience a disk corruption. If you have thin provisioned disks, and
  the VM
writes to it's disks faster than the disks can grow, this is exactly

Hi Koen,

What is the error that you got when live storage migration failed?
Can you please attach vdsm.log and engine.log

 Subject: [Users] Disk error

 Hi all!

I got a kind of a strange error in ovirt. THere was a problem with a vm that
was complaining about low disk space. (in terms of storage space of the
storage center). So I did a live migration of the vm's disk. This failed, so
I did a shutdown of the vm, to see if that would help, but now I can't get
the VM back up again. Neither can I remove the disk or deactivate the dis.
 This is the error:
Keep in mind that the vm is down and he had 2 disks...

While trying to deactivate the disk:

 Error while executing action:

 KV-virt-v2v:

 * Cannot hot unplug Virtual Machine Disk. Disk KV-virt-v2v_Disk2 is being
 moved or copied.

When I try to simply remove the vm:

 Error while executing action:

 KV-virt-v2v:

 * Cannot remove VM. Disk KV-virt-v2v_Disk2 is being moved or copied.
 * Cannot remove VM. Disk LargeTemplate_Disk1 is being moved or copied.

 Kind regards,

 Koen

First of all, I opened a bug about 'Drive' object has no attribute 'format':

Please send me the output of `rpm -q vdsm` so I'll update the version in the

 Hi

I am experiencing issues with manual VM migration. VM fails to migrate to
other node in the same Cluster. Here are some relevant engine.log entries:

Both Engine and Node are running CentOS 6.5 x64. oVirt Engine Version:
3.3.2-1.el6. VDSM version 4.13.2-1. I restarted engine and vdsm, that did
 not help.

Also in vdsm log file I see the following errors related to the same VM ID:

 Any hints?

I'm not sure what is your definition of node, but if you are talking about
hosts, then I think that hosted engine is what you're looking for.

Subject: [Users] ovirt-engine on the virtualization node?

 Hi

Is it possible to have oVirt engine installed on node1, while having both
node1 and node2 as the virtualization nodes?

Yes, it doesn't sound right at all for redundancy and etc. However, I have a
situation where I have two nodes in a small remote location where I can turn
them into virtualization nodes. I don't have another system I can leverage
for ovirt engine. Another option is to use the oVirt engine at the main site
to access these two remote systems over a dedicated line.

 Thanks

 Subject: [Users] VM Status Unknown

During a migration, the destination host lost connectivity to the san and
 crashed.

Once the server came back up, 3 VMs that didn’t finish migrating have been
stuck in status “Unknown.” Vdsclient doesn’t list any of the vms on either
host. Qemu doesn’t have them listed as mounted on either host. Action vm
start and stop result in “Status: 409”.

The disks for all 3 VMs are listed as green in the WebAdmin. I’ve tried
“action vm name start” “action vm name stop” “update vm name
--status-state down” no joy. They remain in “unknown.”

Subject: [Users] Unable to delete a snapshot

 Hi,

With our oVirt 3.3, I created a snapshot 3 weeks ago on a VM I've
 properly shutdown.
 It ran so far.
Today, after having shut it down properly, I'm trying to delete the
snapshot and I get an error :

Failed to delete snapshot 'blahblahbla' for VM 'myVM'.

The disk is thin provisionned, accessed via virtIO, nothing special.

The log below comes from the manager.

I hope someone could help us because this server is quite serious.

 Thank you.

Re: [Users] Bug? ovirt-guest-agent / Ubuntu

2014-01-06 Thread Meital Bourvine
I don't think that it's related to the engine.
I've never seen it on any ovirt setup that I have.

Anyway, you can try running:
lsof -c ovirt | wc -l

In order to see how many open files ovirt is using.

Changing the limits of the OS shouldn't cause any bad behaviour.
You can read a little bit about it - there is a soft limit and a hard limit.

Thank you for your fast reply,

currently the maximum is set to 1024.
I'll check back with my colleagues when they are in the office again.
A quick check on some different systems shows this seems to be pretty
standard behaviour, so why should it cause problems?

Can this be circumvented in the agent?
I must look first into what side-effects this change may introduce.

Engine log can be found on the engine (while vdsm.log is on the host).
The full path is - /var/log/ovirt-engine/engine.log

audit.log - /var/log/audit/audit.log

About the vdsm log - I don't see any error there, I think that you cut too much
from it.

SELinux is off. The cluster doesn't work if SELinux is on, my hosts and
storage is showing up as okay but VM is not starting up.

I've managed to get vdsm.log but cannot find engine.log and audit.log. Sorry
for being a noob, if you can tell me the path to these files I'll send them
 right away.

Please try running `setenforce 0` before starting the vm.

  Also please attach engine.log, vdsm.log, and audit.log

   Hello all,

First of all thank you for your help, I've finally managed to get my
   Cluster
configured properly but now that I create VMs I'm facing another problem.
Whenever I start my VM I get this error.

VM TestVm is down. Exit message: Child quit during startup handshake:
   Input/output error.

I've googled around but haven't found any satisfactory solution. If
   anyone
can help out it would be great.

Re: [Users] VM not starting up

2013-12-30 Thread Meital Bourvine
Are you sure that vdsm is running?

The error happened at 2013-12-31 11:32:56,999 (engine.log)
but the last line in vdsm.log is from 2013-12-31 07:20:50,807

Also make sure that your clocked are synced.

Sending files one by one. Vdsm.log

Engine log can be found on the engine (while vdsm.log is on the host).

The full path is - /var/log/ovirt-engine/engine.log

  audit.log - /var/log/audit/audit.log

About the vdsm log - I don't see any error there, I think that you cut too
  much from it.

Re: [Users] different data types on single node

2013-12-28 Thread Meital Bourvine
Hi Neil,

You need at least one host for each DC.
You can always set your host to maintenance, and edit it (change the DC).

I am trying to test the performance of iSCSI and NFS on our system.
However, I just discovered I have to have a new datacenter for each data
type. Does this mean it's a single DC for each host? Is it possible to
have a host use multiple data centers for different storage types?

 Than you,
 Neil

Subject: [Users] REST Error during VM creation

 Hi,

when we try to create a vm via REST-API, we get the following error
 via REST:

 h1HTTP Status 500 - org.codehaus.jackson.map.JsonMappingException:
 (was java.lang.NullPointerException) (through reference chain:

uThe server encountered an internal error

 from fulfilling this request./u/pHR size=1
 noshade=noshadeh3JBoss Web/7.0.13.Final/h3

However, the vm is correctly created (see attached engine.log).

 This is ovirt-engine 3.3.2-1.el6

 Any suggestions?

We need to be able to get the correct response via API.

Should I open a BZ for this?
