if you have the bandwidth to submit a PR with fixing the links it would
be really helpful. Otherwise, please open an issue for this on GitHub
and we'll try to route the task accordingly :)

[ovirt-users] Welcome: New ovirt.org website!

2016-02-19 Thread Mikey Ariel
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Following yesterday's pre-launch email[1], I'm happy to announce that
the new ovirt.org[2] website is now live in **public beta** and
available for community review.

All the information in this email is also available in the first blog
post of our shiny new oVirt blog[3]. Read on for information about new
features, known issues, and a call for reviews.

The old MediaWiki site is still available in read-only[4], and will be
taken offline on **March 1, 2016**. This is to ensure that you can
compare pages and review migrated content.

What's New
==

The new Website is full of improvements and enhancements, check out
these highlights:

* Source content is now formatted in Markdown instead of MediaWiki.
This means that you can create and edit documentation, blog posts, and
feature pages with the same Markdown syntax you know.

* The Website is deployed with Middleman and stored on GitHub. This
means that you can make changes to content with the same GitHub
contribution workflow that you know (fork, clone, edit, commit, submit
pull request). We even have an "Edit this page on GitHub" link at the
bottom of every page!

* New layout and design, from breadcrumbs to sidebards and an upgraded
landing page. (This is still WIP, please see known issues.)

* Automatic redirects from the old MediaWiki site. This means that if
the wiki page exists in the new website, previously-released URLs will
redirect to that page. If the page was removed, the Search page will
open with the page title auto-filled in the search box.

* Hierarchical content structure. This means that instead of flat
Wiki-style files, the deployed Website reflects an organized source
repo with content sorted into directories and sub-directories.

* Official oVirt blog! Our new blog welcomes contributions. This means
that if you solved a problem with oVirt, want to share your oVirt
story, or describe a cool integration, you can submit a pull request
with a blog post and we will provide editorial reviews and help
publish your posts.

* Standardized contribution process. The GitHub repo now includes a
README.md[5] file that you can use to learn about how to add and edit
content on the website. We welcome pull requests!

Known Issues

Despite our best efforts, there are still a few kinks with the new
website that you should be aware of:

* Attempting to navigate to ovirt.org (without www.) leads to a
redirect loop. We have a ticket open with OpenShift, our hosting
service to fix this.

* Only http is available. We also have a ticket with OpenShift to add
SSL and enable https.

* Home page and Download page are still being upgraded by our UX
experts, expect some cool new changes soon!

* Feature pages look-and-feel is still under construction. You can
still edit and push feature pages as usual.

What's Next
===

Even though the Website is live, the work is hardly over. We'd like to
ask for your help in:

* Reviewing content for anything obsolete or outdated (each page in
the new website includes a header toolbar with metadata from the
original wiki page for your convenience)

* Submitting blog posts or any other content that you wish to share
with the oVirt community

* Reporting bugs and proposing enhancements, for example broken links
or missing pages

We hope you will enjoy the new oVirt Website, looking forward to your
feedback and contributions!

[ovirt-users] Coming (Very) Soon - New ovirt.org Website & Deprecated Wiki

2016-02-18 Thread Mikey Ariel
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

In the past months we've been working on upgrading the oVirt project
infrastructure, to better support the community contributions.

One of the main platforms for our user documentation, release
management content, and community content has been the MediaWiki site
that you all know as ovirt.org. Most of us are familiar with the wiki
site format, with all its advantages and disadvantages.

After several years of serving the community, I'm happy to announce
that we are very near to completing a full upgrade of the website
infrastructure from a wiki site to a static site, source-controlled on
GitHub and authored in Markdown.

This email is the pre-launch announcement, as we are reaching the
final stages of the migration, and there are a few actions that might
affect your work on website content in the meantime.

Why migrate the website
===

As mentioned, wiki sites provide an open and flexible content editing
platform. Unfortunately, as the site grows the content becomes quite
difficult to manage and curate, resulting in lots of obsolete,
outdated, and incorrect information.

By moving to a source-controlled repository and implementing GitHub's
contribution workflow, we strive to ease the work of maintaining an
up-to-date content site, employ a peer-review process for changes, and
standardize the authoring markup language to lower the contribution
barrier.

The Middleman framework (Ruby-based static site generator) was chosen
based on observing successful implementation of other open-source
community websites, such as OpenStack RDO, Project Atomic, and Gluster.

What we did so far
==

When we started the migration, our Web design team exported all of the
wiki content from the old website and converted it to MD files. They
also set up the website config flow, auto-deploy, and upgraded the
look-and-feel of the website.

We then initiated a content review effort as well as a UX review for
the new website in a smaller forum, which caught most of the critical
issues with the new website and helped us get the new format to a
place where we can release the website in a near-GA/public-beta format.

Yesterday (Wednesday Feb 17) we exported the website one more time and
currently we're running a diff on all the files that changed since the
initial export was done, to make sure we grab all the updates and the
latest content before we launch the new website.

What is about to happen
===

Today we are initiating a **wiki freeze**, which means the old
MediaWiki site will become read-only. This is to ensure that all of
our diff scripts reflect the most current state of the content on the
website, and that we don't lose any content in the transition.

Barring any unexpected blockers, we will port the ovirt.org domain to
point to the new website and open the new website for contributions on
**Monday February 22** or earlier.

What do you need to do right now

If you have any wiki pages that you're actively editing, please don't
save them to the old MediaWiki site, and hold onto your pending
changes until we send the happy launch email.

We will also include instructions on how to contribute/edit/add
content to the new website, but in general the workflow will be
aligned with the standard GitHub best practices
(clone-edit-commit-pullrequest), so you can utilize all of the git
commands that you already know or work directly within the GitHub web
editor.

I'd like to thank all of the people who were involved with this
migration so far, ovirt.org is a big website with lots of content and
it was no small task to upgrade it.

Please feel free to ping me on- or off-list if you have any questions
about the next steps, and expect a happy launch email soon!

Cheers,
Mikey

[ovirt-users] oVirt goes to FOSDEM 2016 - the full scoop!

2016-01-06 Thread Mikey Ariel
FOSDEM 2016 is just a few short weeks away, and I'm happy to share with
you the full details about our community presence at the conference.

===
Virt & IaaS Devroom
===

Just a reminder that the full schedule is published on the FOSDEM
website[1], and we have some great presentations from our community
members for you to learn from.

===
oVirt/Foreman Stand
===

This year we will share a stand with our friends from the Foreman
project. Stop by to say hello, grab swag, and enjoy some cool demos!

**STAND VOLUNTEERS WANTED**

If you're attending FOSDEM and would like to help us out, we'd love to
have you there! This is a great opportunity to chat about oVirt with
FOSDEM attendees and meet other community members from all over the world.

Special surprise swag is reserved for booth volunteers! Please sign up
for booth shifts in the etherpad[2] (lines 11-33). One of our core
contributors will also be at the booth to support and co-pilot each shift.

===
Social Event on Saturday
===

In previous years, we had informal social gatherings for our community
members on Saturday evening. These evenings are yet another excellent
opportunity to meet and chat with the oVirt community outside the hectic
FOSDEM venue.

This year we'd like to hold an event again if there is enough demand, so
please write your name/IRCnick/Twitter/G+/email in the etherpad[2] (line
86 and down) **by January 15**.

If there is enough interest, we will reserve a nice pub in the center of
Brussels and buy the first round :)

See you in Brussels!

[ovirt-users] FOSDEM16 Virt & IaaS Devroom CFP Extension, Speaker Mentoring, CoC

2015-11-23 Thread Mikey Ariel
The CFP for the Virtualization & IaaS devroom at FOSDEM 2016 is in full
swing, and we'd like to share a few updates with you:

-
Speaker Mentoring Program
-

As a part of the rising efforts to grow our communities and encourage a
diverse and inclusive conference ecosystem, we're happy to announce that
we'll be offering mentoring for newcomer speakers. Our mentors can help
you with tasks such as reviewing your abstract, reviewing your
presentation outline or slides, or practicing your talk with you.

You may apply to the mentoring program as a newcomer speaker if you:

* Never presented before or
* Presented only lightning talks or
* Presented full-length talks at small meetups (<50 ppl)

Submission guidelines:

* Mentored presentations will have 25-minute slots, where 20 minutes
will include the presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for questions.

* The number of newcomer session slots is limited, so we will probably
not be able to accept all applications.

* You must submit your talk and abstract to apply for the mentoring
program, our mentors are volunteering their time and will happily
provide feedback but won't write your presentation for you! If you are
experiencing problems with Pentabarf, the proposal submission interface,
or have other questions, you can email iaas-virt-devroom at
lists.fosdem.org and we will try to help you.

How to apply:

* Follow the same procedure to submit an abstract in Pentabarf as
standard sessions. Instructions can be found in our original CFP
announcement:
http://community.redhat.com/blog/2015/10/call-for-proposals-fosdem16-virtualization-iaas-devroom/

* In addition to agreeing to video recording and confirming that you can
attend FOSDEM in case your session is accepted, please write "speaker
mentoring program application" in the "Submission notes" field, and list
any prior speaking experience or other relevant information for your
application.

Call for mentors!

Interested in mentoring newcomer speakers? We'd love to have your help!
Please email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org with a short speaker
bio and any specific fields of expertise (for example, KVM, OpenStack,
storage, etc) so that we can match you with a newcomer speaker from a
similar field. Estimated time investment can be as low as a 5-10 hours
in total, usually distributed weekly or bi-weekly.

Never mentored a newcomer speaker but interested to try? Our mentoring
program coordinator will be happy to answer your questions and give you
tips on how to optimize the mentoring process. Email us and we'll be
happy to answer your questions!

-
CFP Deadline Extension
-

To help accommodate the newcomer speaker proposals, we have decided to
extend the deadline for submitting proposals by one week.

The new deadline is **TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8 @ midnight CET**.

-
Code of Conduct
-

Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM[1], we'd
like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations
and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the
CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC
at all times.

If you submit a proposal and it is accepted, you will be required to
confirm that you accept the FOSDEM CoC. If you have any questions about
the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organizers review your
presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please
email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org and we will do our best to
help you out.

[ovirt-users] Community Newsflash: Local oVirt events

2015-11-13 Thread Mikey Ariel
As a part of the community activities for 2016, I'm excited to share
with you that we'll be boosting local oVirt activities in a city near you!

===
What is a "local oVirt event"?
===

Local events include (but are not limited to) meetups, workshops, or
hackathons, focused on bringing oVirt users and contributors together to
share stories, celebrate milestones, learn something new, or collaborate
on oVirt projects.

We're also hoping to collaborate with other open-source user and
developer groups, much like our upcoming oVirt/Foreman meetup in London[1].

===
Where will these events happen?
===

Anywhere you are! oVirt is a global community and we're happy to support
our regional users and contributors all around the world.

Suggestions for cities where you'd like to see the oVirt community get
together and grow are welcome, but we need your help to make it happen!

===
How can we make it happen?
===

At the core of any local technology event is the local community. Sadly,
I am not yet omnipresent, so I probably won't be able to personally
organize or attend all of these wonderful future events.

If you would like to:

* Help to coordinate a meetup, workshop, or hackathon in your city

* Give a workshop or a talk about an oVirt-related topic at a local user
or developer group (cross-project integration sessions are especially
welcome!)

* Lead a sprint or hackfest on an oVirt project or task

*

Subscribe to eve...@ovirt.org[1] and introduce yourself. This list will
be used to brainstorm, coordinate, and discuss ideas for oVirt-related
events.

NOTE: Official event announcements will be made to
annou...@ovirt.org[2], so if you just want to be notified of upcoming
events, you can subscribe to that list instead.

Looking forward to meeting you!
Mikey
