The main reasons for it being alpha are that it doesn't yet support a seamless upgrade from Samba 3 and the Active Directory Domain Controller support it was set out to add isn't entirely done yet. It also just needs needs more polishing and documentation. The right way to get both the Samba 3 and Samba 4 code bases is to simply build them from the Samba git repository. The default ./configure will build and install both the Samba 3 and Samba4 binaries. I'll update the wiki page to reflect this as well.
