The main reasons for it being alpha are that it doesn't yet support a seamless upgrade from Samba 3 and the Active Directory Domain Controller support it was set out to add isn't entirely done yet. The right way to get both the Samba 3 and Samba 4 code bases is to simply build them from the Samba git repository. The default ./configure will build and install both the Samba 3 and Samba4 binaries. I'll update the wiki page to reflect this as well.
