Many thanks Thomas, I didn't have the setting SOGoMaximumSyncResponseSize in my config so I added it with a 512 option and emails started to download. Apologies, That would be Sogo 3.0.2 (with some fixes taken manually applied from git) on a CentOS 7 server.
