[SOGo] Sogo a non-starter?

2012-04-10 Thread sogo.ilsa
I was in the process of doing a test deployment of Sogo to see if it would be
suitable to our needs. The feature set looks quite outstanding, especially the
upcoming native Outlook integration.

But, and there's always a but in these things, everywhere I look I read that
Sogo does not do SSL/TLS with SMTP, nor does it do SMTP authentication. Given
the state of the world today, I'm shocked that this isn't considered a basic
essential feature to all mail servers now. This is particular critical for
mobile users who need to send email while off-site.

Please tell me that I misread everything... I was really looking forward to
setting Sogo up, but if it cannot handle such basic features, then I have no
choice but to avoid it.

This has nothing to do with SOGo, since SOGo does not provide
SMTP/IMAP/POP features.
These are provided by your mail services (postfix, cyrus, dovecot,
whatever) and these are normaly able to handle TLS/SSL connections.

What is not SSL/TLS secured is the sending of mails from the SOGo
webinterface to your mail server.
But since in most cases you anyway have the smtp server on the very same
machine, it does not matter, since adding ssl/tls overhead to a
localhost:25 connection does not give you more security

The documentation that I've read pretty clearly shows SOGo being
integrated with 3rd party services for SMTP and IMAP. I *think* that as
long as the software SOGo is being integrated with supports SSL/TLS
there is no cause for concern.
