Hi Bryan,

It's a good idea to use a different time than the one shown so that the
update servers are not overloaded by the whole world banging them all
at once ;)

My sa-update script is configured to do this already:
 'svc -h /var/service/spamd'

And I have a crontab entry, so it's time for beer ;)

sa-update installation

2006-11-29 Thread Odhiambo Washington

Hello List,

I have successfully (I hope) installed and run sa-update, and
I see that it installed files in /var/lib/spamassassin/3.001007/

In my FreeBSD box, I am used to the rules being in
/usr/local/share/spamassassin and /usr/local/etc/mail/spamassassin.

Do I just go out for a cold beer and hope that SA will be reading
these rules as well?

What happens when I run sa-update? Does it update the rules files in
/usr/local/share/spamassassin or what?

Hi Magnus,

This is not the case. I call spamc via a procmail recipe, for certain
users only, so you can guess there is an Exim router/transport involved
;)

I did find the problem though, and it was something to do with my
migration from 2.64 -> 3.17 - spamd was simply not running, because I
had given it a stupid parameter in the startup arguments.

permissions for the bayes_*

2006-11-27 Thread Odhiambo Washington
I am trying to figure out something:

When spamd is being run WITHOUT -u johndoe, then presumably, it is
running as root, yes?

So, who should own the files in --siteconfigpath? Especially those that
require modification, like the bayes* and auto_whitelist files?

I am running a setup where spamc is invoked from a global procmailrc
for certain users. However, I see in the logs (I am logging spamd
activities via syslog rule) the following:

Tue Nov 28 00:01:08 2006 [96179] info: spamd: connection from localhost

This happens at every instance that spamc is invoked for a user.

Here is how the procmail rule invokes spamc:

Crazy things do happen in this Open Source world ;)

Anyway, for me, it's because I want to run a second instance of
FuzzyOCR on another box, which in most cases receives mail that has
been analyzed by SA from a box sitting in front of it. Spammers still
are able to connect to this box though, and this is for other reasons
that this box is only hidden by MX, but visible by other means.
It's just that I do not want to run a fully fledged SA on it.

Great! This clarifies the doubts that were lingering in my mind.

If you install the utility called portupgrade, you can do:

portupgrade -m WITH_TOOLS=1 p5-Mail-SpamAssassin

The sa-stats.pl will then be installed in
/usr/local/share/spamassassin/tools/

| Why? SpamAssassin isn't deleting messages, so what else is?

Well, I have told my MTA to reject mail that scores above 7, so yes, I
am responsible for these "not getting there", but SA is responsible for
the high scores, which is what I am trying to address.

My problem is not with rejections, but with the wildly "high scores" ;)

The greedy SA 3.1.7

2006-11-07 Thread Odhiambo Washington
Hi,

I have been watching one of my servers running 3.1.7 for several days.
With just the default install and a simplistic local.cf, this server is
scoring messages so highly that I have gotten suspicious.

I decided to deinstall and reinstall everything, even blew away all
bayes data!

I especially have an issue with the way it's scoring Mail Delivery
Failures, all of which seem to be classified as spam with very high
scores.
It would appear that NDR are not reaching my users, just because of this
behaviour.

Another thing I have noted is the fact that even legit mail is being
scored highly as spam, but it is the scores that are really amazing.

I have used rulesdujour sparingly, with the following rules:

TRUSTED_RULESETS="
 TRIPWIRE
 ANTIDRUG
 SARE_ADULT
 SARE_SPOOF
 SARE_OEM
 SARE_HEADER
 SARE_OBFU
 SARE_GENLSUBJ
 SARE_UNSUB
 SARE_WHITELIST
"
I have even disabled all these rules, but still, the SA seems to have
developed a mind of its own.

Now I am lost as to why this should happen.

I have put my local.cf at http://mx0.wananchi.com/sa/
I have also put in there a file named sample-data.txt which contains
an extract of my MTA's logs as SA is rejecting data. I am logging the
data with the following fields:

DISCARD_SPAM:
Size::$message_size
Score::SA_SCORE
F:sender_addr
T:recipient_addr
S:message_subject

PS: This data is here for a few hours only..

Again, it's simply amazing how much score (and damage) SA seems to be
showing.

Please advise.

You're right. They'd both work the same, as far as I've seen all these
years. The only difference is that the port allows one to pull in some
complementary apps like DCC, RAZOR, etc in a clean way (clean, as in
a systems maintained mostly via ports, not manual compiles).

Scripted Upgrade from 2.x to 3.x

2006-10-06 Thread Odhiambo Washington
Hello Everyone,

Long time ago, a link to a script names sa3-upgrade.pl was posted at
http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/UpgradeTo300.

The link to the script is currently broken, so it's unavailable.

Does anyone have this script and would like to share with me?

It's time to do away with my 2.64.

Thanks in advance.
