encoded: either its direct codepoint or diacritic + letter

Michael means that there are several ways to represent a "same"
string (from a semantic point of view). There are two normalized
representations: NFC and NFD. While Linux does not try to normalize
filenames (they are just viewed as a sequence of bytes[*]), Mac OS X
(at least with HFS+) requires that the filenames are valid UTF-8
strings (even in non-UTF-8 locales) and normalize them to NFD for
storing them on disk.

[*] The locale doesn't matter, and top-bit-set bytes are allowed and
can be handled even in ASCII-based locales.

SVN decides if two repositories are "the same" by comparing their UUIDs.
You can get the Repository UUID from the old repository with "svn info",
and set it on the new repository with "svnadmin setuuid".

test run of synchronizing repositories. I will have a small window to
migrate repositories. Using the svnsync gives me possibility to do major
job before the change window and then final sync during the change.

In this step I have some doubts whether users will have possibility to
relocate their local copies to new repository on new server. The first
step of sync procedure is to create fresh repository, I am afraid that
it will have different ID and svn will say "its not the same repository"


I will test it but you are welcome to give me your comments.

 

I have about 400 repositories to migrate. Svnsync showed about 60 -70
hours to sync all repos.

It depends on the Subversion repository backend.

If the BerkeleyDB backend is used, a dump/load cycle is probably
necessery,
so just do it to be on the safe side.

With repositories using FSFS, there is nothing to worry about.

The file "db/fs-type" in a repository tells you which kind of
backend
the repository is using: "bdb" or "fsfs"

Ah, thanks. I read the whole chapter on setting up svnsync, but it only 
said "never write to the mirror". In particular, it didn't mention that you 
could set up a write proxy if you are using Apache to serve the repository.

svn:keywords settings make file different?

I set properties svn:keywords HeadURL,Id yesterday. I can't compile my 
C++ source code today. 
I got LNK 1106,1248 errors.I tried to find out what happened and I use 
WinMerge to compare the 3party Lib, 
I found 
1.They are different lib I can see the binary is the same but content 
different with HeadURL 
2.If I rollback to setting properties before revision,I can compile 
success. 
I wonder to know,that svn:keywords will break the file? Is there 
anyone face to the same problems?

I'd like to know your experience on building subversion with
GNOME Keyring. Which GNOME Keyring version works well with
svn 1.6.12 and is there an easier way to do it? Your advice
will be much appreciated.


You don't say which flavour of Linux, but if you have a package manager, like 
yum or apt-get for example, it's much easier as they take care of all the 
dependencies.

Having said that, I personally had a hell of a time (and gave up for the time 
being) to unlock the keyring upon login. Once the keyring is unlocked the 
everything is fine, but I can't seem to be able to avoid entering the keyring 
password.

Check out both sources and compare. Also, you can suppress keyword expansion 
while checking out, I believe.

Not everybody knows what LNK 1106 and LNK 1248 are and I'm too lazy to look 
them up.

Wait. Did you actually set the svn:keywords property on the .LIB file or only 
on the textual source files? I don't think that setting it on non-text files 
is a good idea.

Keyword replacement changes the file in a well-specified way. Whether the 
result then causes it to become invalid in some context is a different issue, 
which you should have considered before setting that property.

Why would trunk be listed in the svn:mergeinfo in trunk? We've been
using mergeinfo's for a while now. Could this be the result of merging
out (from trunk to a project branch) and then back? 

Can this safely be deleted? I'm trying to clean up our mergeinfo's
because they exist in too many directories and they contain references
to literally 2 dozen branches that are long retired and I think they're
slowing down my merges which now take almost 5 minutes each.

here's a quick summary:


repository has these files:
xyz
A: commits changes to all the files and adds 2 new files 
repository now has these files:
pqxyz
B: Sees that these changes f**ks up the whole program and he rollbacks to only 
x,y,z
A: keeps his changes locally and keeps changing them until they work...
B: commits new code.
A: is happy because now everything works on his local copy. Then he pushes 
'update' in netbeans before he commits.
SVN: now deletes all of A's  changes and new files.. 
A: screams in terror and tries to get back his files... but not a chance... He 
can get the changes he committed before the rollback, but the real big changes 
are now deleted


Is there a way to undo this update? Or to save us the next time, is there a way 
to take a local backup before updating???Please help we're desperate here... 
Its about 1 week of programming down the toilet...

another mergeinfo question

I have two instances of mergeinfos in the root of my tree showing a
wider range of changes merged in than a merge info in a subdirectory.
Does svn merge these merge infos together? 

Example

Mergeinfo in /zcode/trunk   shows that
/zcode/branches/rel_2:1124-1406   was merged
Mergeinfo in /zcode/trunk/lcast shows that
/zcode/branches/rel_2/lcast:1124-1388 was merged

So was 1389-1406 merged in the lcast directory or not? 

No, I don't know how I got into this state. I wish I had caught this
sooner, but rel_2 has been dormant for a while. I suppose I could look
at the history of the property.

Well, from my amateur understanding if the merge into /zcode/trunk/lcast was 
done before the merge into /zcode/trunk/lcast when the top level merge was done 
the mergeinfo on /zcode/trunk/lcast should have been elided. My only guess is 
that the person that did the top level merge reverted the property change to 
the /zcode/trunk/lcast folder since they figured there was no change in that 
folder. 

Once again, from my understanding you can remove that merge info from 
/zcode/trunk/lcast because it is included in the /zcode/trunk folder. 

YMMV... check your logs and I expect you will see that the merge for 1124-1406 
into /trunk did not include a change to /trunk/lcast to elide the property... 
which it should of. Also, you might want to setup a test scenerio of this by 
dumping your repo or just create a similar situation in a test repo.

Also, you might want to train your people to not merge from project sub-folders 
to prevent child-node/file mergeinfo.

I don't think so... but you could test it. Do you have a test repo?

Is it possible at some point in time you just decided to make some branch into 
trunk by deleting trunk and then copying a branch to trunk? If you did that it 
may explain the mergeinfo.

I don't see why you would need to keep this data... it seems non-sensical to 
have mergeino on the trunk that shows merges from trunk.

Question about performance on large repository?

We have a single repository which contains multiple projects (as opposed 
to have different repositories each representing a single project) that 
has been worked on over a considerable amount of time totalling probably 
well over 50 gb (code + binaries).  In this scenario, how is the overall 
performance of SVN operations affected (i.e. update, switch, checkout, 
etc.)?

How to avoid the .svn  directories while preparing rpm packages?
When I am trying to do rpmbuild ,it is also taking all the .svn
directores recursively ,Which I don't want to see in the rpm packages
since we send to clients. I tried with %exclude but did not work. Do
any one has this problem?

Both A and B should have first talked with each other. A would then have 
created a branch probably.

I don't think so, as SVN tries very hard to preserve any user changes. If a 
file was deleted in the repository, SVN won't delete a local copy of a file 
if that contains modifications. If a file was modified, and those changes 
conflict with local changes, SVN will notify the user of this and attempt at 
resolving the conflict, but it first moves all three versions to separate 
files.

As I mentioned, SVN preserves those changes unless explicitly asked to throw 
them away (some "--force" options on the commandline). I don't know what 
netbeans' update button does. Also, if there are conflicts (I'm sure SVN 
would have complained), you can always choose "resolve using theirs", which 
implies that your own changes are discarded. If your colleague chose that, 
it's a user error.

Going one week without proper version control, without being able to backstep 
any changes, without the benefits of a centralised backup system, without 
updating the own WCs to see if changes conflict? Don't do that.

Note that if you had created a branch, you could have done these extensive 
changes in separation but still with version control etc, you should learn 
that. However, it still remains to find out what steps exactly lead to this 
data loss.

It doesn't work for your twisted requirement of having a program

It's not a solution because storing the information in wc meta-data
does not fix anything. What is Subversion supposed to do with filenames
that come down from the repository during an update, but cannot be
represented in the recorded charset? Using UTF-8 instead of the recorded
charset is out of the question. That leaves erroring out as the only
option. So how is that different from the current situation?

There is a clearly defined way of letting Subversion know which
charset to use. Set the locale. If you have to, set Subversion's locale
to something other than what locale your terminal uses.

You should probably export your working copy to a new folder and build your 
package from that. An export does not include the .svn folders.

How are you preparing rpm packages?  I have a tool svndownstream that we
use to package up workareas or export revisions from a URL into a
tarball and loose files that can be used in OBS (which uses rpmbuild at
the lower levels).  It may be useful for you.

It is smart enough to understand which files haven't been added to
Subversion yet or have been deleted, so it's useful for developers doing
test builds before checkins and it will ignore all the ? status derived
files.

svndownstream config -i obs .spec

If you want just the Subversion to Tarball bit that's in
http://www.gitorious.org/cray-obs/svndownstream/blobs/master/svndownstream/subversion.py

There's also support for injecting svn info, like the URL or revision
into files that rpmbuild can use.

Please,
I have svnserve running as a service.
It starts automatically with a repository.

I can use the command "svn list svn://localhost", this runs very well, but
when i tried to do this from another pc ("svn list svn://mycomputer"), i got
the following error (it's translated because my subversion is in portuguese
language): "cannot connect to the host 'mycomputer': No connection could be
done because the target machine actively refused it"

I'm not behind a firewall in both machines.
Can someone help me, please?

Many programs are able to use UTF-8 in a C locale, such as programs
that handle XML or any file format based on UTF-8.

Also, if Subversion needs a UTF-8 locale for handle UTF-8 data, why
wouldn't there be an option to do that?

Throw an error. But if the user has chosen UTF-8 as the recorded
charset, this won't happen.

With the current situation, a "svn up" run under the non-UTF-8 locale
will either fail or corrupt the working copy if some filenames have
non-ASCII characters. With UTF-8 recorded as the encoding for
filenames, "svn up" will always work. See the difference?

Err, ignore my previous response, it wasn't to the question you asked.

But why does it take a long time?  You can do

svn add file
svn ps p1 v1 file
svn ps p2 v2 file
svn ps p3 v3 file
svn ci file

and only the last line is done over the network.

I thought the properties would not apply to binary file so I apply the setting 
on the root folder.
If it couldn't tell binary or text file,I should find out thousands files which 
is binary or text,isn't it?

Properties will be successfully applied to any file you tell Subversion to 
apply them to. Setting properties on binary files will most likely corrupt 
them, as you've seen. Therefore do not instruct Subversion to set properties on 
binary files.

Um, in all of the above I mean the svn:keywords property specifically, and the 
svn:eol-style property; setting other properties on binary files should be fine.

No, not wrong, but totally correct - especially, if you need to parse the
output in some script, you (kinda) MUST set the locale to some value,
that you know. Leaving it in a undefined state is no good at all.

It is never too late to mend.Next time I would tell others do not apply 
svn:keywords on binaries files.
But is it possible skip binary files setting properties to prevent corrupt 
binary file? :P Just thought
