Taking mirror Backup of SVN Repos through 3rd Party Software

2011-06-29 Thread Waseem Bokhari
Hi Guys!
We are using 3rd party software that take (Copy/Paste)
Backup of all databases of SVN on differential basis. I have some confusion.
What's in all these *.txn folders (33740-q3q.txn, 1757-1d0.txn,
33753-q43.txn) Please guide ? Are they of any use? What is their importance
for Us? Could they be ignored or excluded?
For some reason new set of files that are being dropped into these folders
and they happen to be Alternate data streams, and which we do not seem to be
able to pseudo mirror.
Thanks in advance

Waseem,

indeed, anyone can _unlock_ the file because the pre-lock hook script is
never triggered for an unlock operation. (The unlock operation is called
Break lock in TortoiseSVN's Repository Browser.)

You'd need to provide a pre-unlock hook script to handle this.

- --- snip snip ---
@echo off
set trc=C:\tmp\waseem\trace.txt
echo === BEGIN pre-unlock  %trc%

:: Set all parameters
set repository=%1
set repopath=%2
set user=%3

:: Set path to svnlook
set svnlook=%VISUALSVN_SERVER%bin\svnlook.exe

echo repository = %repository% %trc%
echo repopath = %repopath% %trc%
echo user = %user% %trc%
echo svnlook = %svnlook% %trc%

echo --- %trc%

:: Check that the lock exists and has an owner.
echo 1 %trc%
%svnlook% lock %repository% %repopath% %trc% 21
echo 2 %trc%
%svnlook% lock %repository% %repopath% | findstr /C:Owner: %user%
 nul 21

:: If the person locking matches the lock's owner, allow unlocking.
set rc=%ERRORLEVEL%
echo 3 %trc%
if %rc% EQU 0 ^ echo Info: %repopath% OK to unlock by %user%. %trc%
echo 4 %trc%
if %rc% EQU 0 exit 0

:: Otherwise, print notice to stderr and return failure.
echo 5 %trc%
echo Error: %repopath% is locked by another user. %trc%
echo 6 %trc%
echo Error: %repopath% is locked by another user. 12
exit 1

Waseem,

that's too little information to give advice. Tell us about your
repository and client setup.

Wild guess: are you perhaps using the file:// access method when
browsing the repository? Hook scripts are run by the Subversion server
process. Using the file:// access method effectively disables them.

I don't think %VISUALSVN_SERVER% is set in your lock script. Subversion
explicitly clears most environment variables before calling hook scripts.

Most likely your script can't find svnlook.exe

working
copy. This has the effect that every child directory of a working copy
is
itself a working copy. SVN 1.7 wants to centralise this, i.e. only use a
  single place to store this.

This won't be configurable, won't it? I always found it really
practical to be able to just copy/move entire sub folders of my
working copy to a new location and have a functional working copy,
without the need to checkout over and over again.

There will be a detach command to support this use case eventually.
So far it's not present in trunk so probably not in 1.7, but later.

In the meantime, you'll just have to live without this technically
unsupported use case which only worked because of a side-effect of
the 1.6 working copy design.

RE: Stress-Testing of SVN

2011-02-08 Thread Waseem Bokhari
Subversion client works in Disconnected mode unless you go to perform some
function(s) that really create session with server unless it ends. Whenever
you need to test subversion performance and server load ; keep the following
parameters in your mind:-

· CPU Usage and monitoring
· SVN Logs
· Hard disk space w.r.to repo size on which repos database :
· RAM usage
· Loading bulk amount of users etc etc :. Depends on OS you
are using

PS: Specially when performance during massive Commits or Massive checkouts
or Increasing load of users on server using Commit, checkouts etc :..

I used these all.
We have Visual SVN on server side with 1000 GB of data for svn repos. TSVN
on client side. Good server specs and RAM/HD as well.

If anyone have good ideas other than ; please share J

Thanks in advance

 Cheers!

Subject: Stress-Testing of SVN

Good afternoon!
I have a task to stress test our SVN server, but unfortunately I'd know how
to emulate some definite number of users and how to monitor server load
during the work of these users.
Please, can you recommend me how can I stress test SVN server, to what
metrics should I pay attention (what is the bottleneck of SVN: memory, CPU,
hdd?) and with what tools I can monitor ubuntu server/svn server ?

I will be very grateful! Please help me!

This line looks wrong. Try using a backslash ('\') instead of a forward
slash ('/'). Although many Windows programs tolerate forward slashes in
file names, the Windows batch processor is not one of them. It uses forward
slashes to mark parameters (as is shown in the For /F lines) so it is
trying to interpret /message.txt as a parameter, not part of your message
file name.

If you're going to be creating or editing Windows batch files, I strongly
encourage you to buy a book on how to create them. It's been so long that I
can't recommend one to you, unfortunately.

Even I have changed the slashed but the message was same.

Please advice.

Did you change both lines? I also see forward slashes in the line which is
described as SEND THE EMAIL at the very end.

For that matter, this line looks wrong too. Earlier, you set the variable
DIR to E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\hooks. The value of this variable will
be substituted whenever %DIR% appears. Thus if you have SET
MESSAGE_FILE=%DIR%\message.txt this is the same as SET
MESSAGE_FILE=E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\hooks\message.txt and the value of
this variable will be substituted whenever %MESSAGE_FILE% appears, as it
does on the last line.

If you replace the forward slashes in the last line with backslashes and
perform the substitution of %MESSAGE_FILE%, the first word of the line
will become
E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\hooks\message.txt,
which is obviously an invalid Windows path name.

The message file is clearly not intended to include the name of the mail
program, so you need to supply the name of the E-mail program. I don't know
what that would be. Nor do I know the command-line parameters for the
E-mail program, so I cannot tell you whether the syntax of this line is
correct. But if your E-mail send program is
E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\hooks\send_message.exe and it accepted the
parameters you have listed, the last line of the batch program would be:

E:\Repositories\WSBokhari\hooks\send_message.exe %MESSAGE_FILE% %server%
%to% %from% %subj% %auth%

Write a post-commit hook script, or better yet, use one of the several

There's also commit-email.rb:

Don't download it manually, use ActiveState Perl and ppm to get the
package or you have to build the package on your own.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
