Barbara, your questions are actually complicated ones to answer, especially your question about Vista compatibility. Are you asking about supporting users who work on Vista machines? Running an SVN server on Vista? There's more to this decision than a simple yes or no answer. There are several SVN client tools that are not part of Subversion itself but which are commonly used. Finally, many users integrate SVN with other tools for project tracking, etc. The Subversion Book, which you can get from Nick's third link, explains the issues in good detail.
