That event is still in the planning stage. The plan is to go public once
we have enough of the details finalised (hopefully early next week).

TomcatCon had one day of
recordings care of our sponsor, Comcast. Other parts of the conference
had recordings as well.
Are those recordings available? I'm specifically interested in the
Tomcat ones.

I'm sure the ASF would accept a donation of that type.

Not really. The file is rotated *during* log events, and stalling to
compress a log file is probably not a great solution.

> Alternatively/preferably is there a way to put the access logging
> under "log4j"?

Also not really, but if you are willing to write code, you can do it.
The AccessLogValve handles its own logging to a file, but if you were
to subclass AccessLogValve and override the "open" method and assign a
value to the AccessLogValve.writer member that writes to a log4j
logger, then I think you could probably do this.

I believe that log4j will stall your access log during the
compression, though, so you might want to think about whether or not
you want to implement it this way.

What is your operating system? If it were me, I think I'd write a cron
job to check the directory for uncompressed, rotated log files and
compress them in a separate process.

> I am on Tomcat 7.0.62 (no, do not tell me to update. I know. I want

You should upgrade :)

Actually, 7.0.62 is pretty good. Most people say "I'm using Tomcat
7.0.13" or whatever. Your version is at least younger than my kids.

You might want to make your decision makers aware of several important
security issues with Tomcat 7.0.x that have been patched after the
version you are using. Have a look at the changelog[1] specifically
for versions 7.0.75 and 7.0.77. Depending upon your use of Tomcat's
various features, versions 7.0.68, 7.0.70, 7.0.73, and 7.0.78 might be
concerning to you.

jsvc needs to be built on the target machine, etc. which adds another
layer of complexity (just like adding httpd would), which means that
you need a whole toolchain on the target box (or a similar box
elsewhere to build the library, then make sure you really have all the
dependencies)

For my money, I'd front Tomcat with something else, if only for
load-balancing and fail-over capabilities. If you have a reverse
proxy, the port number becomes irrelevant.

I only recently started really playing-around with Tomcat and TLS,
mostly for my Let's Encrypt presentation at this year's ApacheCon.

Given that I think a LB is appropriate, I've never bothered with TLS
and port number games on Tomcat[1].

I looked, and unfortunately the slides jcflere and I did for AapcheCon
2014 are not posted anywhere. They contained lots of comparisons of
static-content load under various configurations and Tomcat keeps up
with httpd. When using TLS, use of OpenSSL is required because JSSE is
slow as a dog.

There are updated comparisons available from this past year where
jfclere compares OpenSSL performance through JSSE versus OpenSSL
through APR versus pure-Java JSSE. Unfortunately it does not include a
comparison against httpd, but https is essentially the same thing as
APR+OpenSSL in Tomcat.

http://schd.ws/hosted_files/apachecon2017/93/TomcatOpenSSL.pdf

Start on slide 15 for pretty graphs.

When you do Window -> Show Views -> Servers and select servers, you'll
get a new pane at the bottom middle of the IDE, labeled servers.

In that pane, you'll see a list of all the servers that you have
configured in your IDE and their states.

If you double-click on one of the servers in the bottom pane, it will
open up the overview in the main editor window. This is a GUI
representation of the main configuration options for that server.

The Server Options will be found in the left hand column at the bottom.
The second checkbox is 'Publish module context to separate XML files'.
Check that box.

Then save the configuration (Ctrl-S or File -> Save) and close the
configuration.

The key here is to double-click (not right-click) the server listed in
the server pane at the bottom center of the IDE.

. . . just my two cents

Tomcat YouTube channel shortly afterwards.
Awesome! Not sure I can make the live event due to time zone
differences (Pacific Time here), but I'll definitely watch the recording
if not.

This is a great initiative!

Re: This is weird: can't bind to 443

2017-08-03 Thread Mark H. Wood
I'm always surprised that so little mention is made of the Commons
Daemon approach:

  http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/setup.html#Unix_daemon

which, among other things, lets Tomcat get privileged ports the same
way that HTTPD (like most other daemons) does: start privileged,
acquire protected resources, drop privilege, run.

This *is* mentioned in RUNNING.txt, but somehow manages to be overlooked.

Automatically compressing localhost_access_log after rotation

2017-08-03 Thread Martin Knoblauch
Hi,

is there a way to compress the localhost_access_log.#.txt file
automatically after rotation? Alternatively/preferably is there a way to
put the access logging under "log4j"?

I am on Tomcat 7.0.62 (no, do not tell me to update. I know. I want to.
But I am not allowed to. So, do not tell me. Please :-)

Thanks
Martin
