Are the connections being returned to the pool after use? If they are not then your application could quickly run out of connections. I do not know about c3p0, I just know that with the connection pools we use, you must return a connection to the pool once you are finished with it because our pools have a limit on the number of connections that can be created in the pool. This stops the database getting too many requests. I think it's not this the problem...
