Do not write data in the webapplication folder, this folder is supposed to be overwritten when webapplication is redeployed and datas will be lost. One way is to send back a reference to a servlet that knows how to retrieve the image. I.e., in your .jsp, say: img src=/path/to/avatar/servlet?avatar=1234/ Where 1234 is the primary key (ID) field of the avatar in the DB. Have the servlet set the response type to image/jpeg or image/png or whatever is appropriate, and then stream the bytes out of the blob from the DB.
