Just one idea: 1-implement your own IStringResourceLoader that reads messages from where you need 2-register it on Application.init(). e.g. getResourceSettings().addStringResourceLoader(GetTextResourceLoader.getInstance()); I see no reason why wicket:message should not work as expected if you do the above. Actually I am using .class files as translation resources(gettext-commons generates them). I use lib called gettext-commons with ant ( http://code.google.com/p/gettext-commons/). I translate all translations with poEdit.
