This is a known issue which occurs sometimes (reproducibly for some people) when the Additions are installed on a new-ish Linux distribution. It can be fixed by deleting /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache and restarting the X server. Is this a know issue? I reinstalled ubuntu-9.04, this time -WITHOUT- USB support. I installed the Guest Editions and everything INCLUDING the mouse works as expected. Also the video driver didn't pick up the right resolution on my laptop, I had to hack xorg.conf. (I'm using Xubuntu, though) Debian 5 picked the right 1280x800 straight away.
