[vchkpw] vpopmail >= 5.4.8 solaris install problem
I have identified an installation problem in the latest releases of vpopmail on Solaris 2.7 the install program used by the Makefile does not support installing multiple files in one run, and it does not error when told to install multiple files -- it simply installs the first in the list, and exits. this yields 'make install' not copying config.h, vauth.h, nor vlimits.h to ~vpopmail/include/ needless to say, this makes things _very_ confusing, when vuserinfo works, but when programs like qmailadmin dont work (because they are using include files from an older vpopmail series that were not overwritten) the following patch fixes the problem (use patch -d vpopmail-5.4.8 < vpopmail-5.4.8-kisterfix): --- Makefile.am.orig 2004-12-09 00:29:58.222616000 -0500 +++ Makefile.am 2004-12-09 00:31:00.863282000 -0500 @@ -151,9 +151,9 @@ $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 \ config.h $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/vpopmail_config.h - $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 \ -vpopmail.h config.h vauth.h vlimits.h \ -$(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/ + for include in vpopmail.h config.h vauth.h vlimits.h ; do \ + $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 $$include $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/ ; \ + done $(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/doc/man_html $(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/doc/doc_html --- Makefile.in.orig 2004-12-09 00:30:02.552653000 -0500 +++ Makefile.in 2004-12-09 00:30:30.282952000 -0500 @@ -829,9 +829,9 @@ $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 \ config.h $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/vpopmail_config.h - $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 \ -vpopmail.h config.h vauth.h vlimits.h \ -$(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/ + for include in vpopmail.h config.h vauth.h vlimits.h ; do \ + $(INSTALL) -o root -m 0444 $$include $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/include/ ; \ + done $(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/doc/man_html $(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)@vpopmaildir@/doc/doc_html -- Jeremy Kister http://jeremy.kister.net/
[vchkpw] chkuser 2.0.8 released again -> 2.0.8a
A damned typing error in chkuser.c gives compile error when #define CHKUSER_STARTING_VARIABLE is defined. You may download 2.0.8a, or change, in chkuser.c, this line: if (strùcasecmp(starting_string, "ALWAYS") == 0) { to if (strcasecmp(starting_string, "ALWAYS") == 0) { Sorry for any inconvenience. Tonino chkuser 2.0.8 has been released, and is available at www.interazioni.it/opensource. As usual, this version has been tested and is now working on my production systems since some weeks. This version, basically: freeze all important changes in 2.0.7 (closing DB connections among all) is more RFC compliant (NULL SENDER is now ALWAYS accepted, and all FORMAT and MX checking defines are OFF by default) cleans some small bugs. It has been released as complete "release" package, and as "update" of previous installed versions (from 2.0.5 to 2.0.7). Additional note: I put on the site a small script displaying chkuser activity. On one of my systems, I defined acceptance limits for existing (limit is 50) and wrong (limit is 5) users. On that system, I'm facing each day several attacks, and these acceptance limits help me rejecting them. They are also suggesting me to implement additional features for rejecting those IP. Any comment on this topic is welcomed. qstat -yesterday CHKUSER entries 10135 CHKUSER accepted null senders 365 CHKUSER rejected senders 268 CHKUSER accepted senders 3615 CHKUSER rejected rcpts 966 CHKUSER accepted rcpts 3809 CHKUSER rejected relaying 88 CHKUSER accepted relaying 42 CHKUSER mbx overquota 0 CHKUSER max rcpt intrusion triggers 0 CHKUSER max wrong rcpt intrusion triggers 62 CHKUSER rejected intrusions 920 Please note I may answer any question until friday, then I'll be again available at the end of the month. I tried to compile it with the patch in the contrib dir, and it worked out. But the result is just the same. But I guess you're totally right. I've tried more extensively and with Outlook Express it doesn't give any error (I suppose OE doesn't use CRAM-MD5). I'm using vpopmail 5.4.6, and qmail is already patched with smtp auth, but still nothing. The question still, is how to make this work, not to make me start using smtp auth. Of course pop-before-smtp is silly. Not supporting smtp auth is at the same time very silly. What if all you want to do is send mail, without popping or imapping? If was really smart I would stop using an utterly dead (not developed since 1998), and unsupported software like qmail is and use _any_ of the others that is still alive, supported, developed and in much wider use. I'm sorry you're not really smart. All I can tell you is I love qmail! If qmail is utterly dead I'm a necrophiliac. Yours truly, Mikael

Dear Alastair, Thank you very much for your help! I tried SIMSCAN_DEBUG=2 in my qmail init script and the logs said the lines I'm sending below. When I installed simscan I used --disable-ripmime because clamav can scan mail messages, but It seems that I must install ripmime anyway??? [vchkpw] vchkpw fails and then succeeds!
When a user tries to authenticate itself, the first time vchkpw fails with: "Dec 6 21:50:08 [vpopmail] vchkpw-smtp: password fail" but then it succeeds immediatly after: "Dec 6 21:50:13 [vpopmail] vchkpw-smtp: (PLAIN) login success" This is very annoying, besides the fact that this only happens with Thunderbird, with other e-mail clients they give an error message and the connection is terminated. Is there any way to solve this thing?
