Re: Max Number of VMs per Host

2012-05-24 Thread Alexander Patterson
I'm not sure from what I have been reading, might want to contact your
VMware Rep and see what they can do if you plan on upgrading to 5.

WIth ESXI 4.1

Infrastructure limitations
Some limitations in ESX Server 4 may constrain the design of data centers:
Guest system maximum RAM: 255 GB
Host system maximum RAM: 1 TB[
Number of hosts in a high availability cluster: 32
Number of Primary Nodes in ESX Cluster high availability: 5
Number of hosts in a Distributed Resource Scheduler cluster: 32
Maximum number of processors per virtual machine: 8
Maximum number of processors per host: 160
Maximum number of cores per processor: 12
Maximum number of virtual machines per host: 320
VMFS-3 limits files to 262,144 (218) blocks, which translates to 256
GB for 1 MB block sizes (the default) or up to 2 TB for 8 MB block
sizes.However, on a VMFS Boot drive, it is usually very difficult to
use anything other than 1 MB Block size

With ESXI 5 there has been some changes to these limits
Guest system maximum RAM: 1 TB
Host system maximum RAM: 2 TB
Number of hosts in a high availability cluster: 32
Maximum number of processors per virtual machine: 32
Maximum number of processors per host: 160
Maximum number of cores per processor: 25
Maximum number of virtual machines per host: 512
VMFS-3 is supported and has the same limits as before
VMFS-5 however has a max volume size of 64 TB and a max file size of 2
TB - 512 B
How much vRAM does a VMware vSphere Hypervisor license provide?
vSphere Hypervisor license provides a vRAM entitlement of 32GB per
server, regardless of the number of physical processors. vSphere
Hypervisor can be used on servers with maximum physical RAM capacity
of 32GB.

Re: Max Number of VMs per Host

2012-05-24 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

ESXI 5 is limit by licenses with the amount of ram you can run on each machine.
The 8 GB vRAM limit is for the upcoming 5.0 free Hypervisor, the 4.x
version had no such memory limits.
VM makes you pay now if you want to use X amount of ram per host with
the upcoming version.

Making 4.1 I Free Version a much more attractive option to go with

We have each of our blades running ESXI 4.1 with 16 Cores and 48 GB of
ram and we have 20 VM's per blade but we give 1.5 GB of ram to each
VM.

Re: Benchmarking Software's on VCL

2012-04-16 Thread Alexander Patterson
We have the same issue here with the GIS software. It's due to RDP has to
refresh the whole screen shot. The GIS software works much better with like
a Cirtix or VMware VDI that doesVmware PCoip that only needs to fresh the
parts thats being used.

RDP does has it's down faults.

Image Not Loading

2011-12-15 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

I'm having an issue with one of my images

See Log here

http://pastebin.com/LT5wdBQr

This image was working fine before nothing was changed. I tried to do
both a image roll back and update the image and each time this image
loads I keep getting the same error.

I see the image on my ESXI 4.1 host, it's loaded up and waiting to log
in, I see it run the SSH Cygwin Scripts. I have the correct IP and the
machine is waiting for the connect, but ends up failing.

State Est/Act

It's strange because it doesn't really fail, it's up and running but
it won't ssh into it, when it's the same passwords as my other images.
It's only this image that was working for about 4 months and now it's
not working. I tested loading it on different ESXI 4.1 host and it was
the same issue. Same error log, any ideas?

1 most of the information that is lost isn't important and when they
need to make another block they can redo it. We don't do as many
blocks are you do, but 1 would be ideal.

with Identity Management, we are unable to import classes from
peoplesoft for students. Our classes are starting next week. I wanted
to know if you had any time to help? Could we setup up a short call?

Please let me know

We are having a short meeting at 11:00 AM to discus this, I'm in the
dark about the issue myself as this was always done by our Identity
Management team.

This is what I know from eamils back and forth if it helps at all?
Might be better to speak on the phone.

-
For adding in VCL classes but the educoursemember attribute value
corresponding to TERM=2114 from the salt lake city database is not
coming.

The query is same and works okay in both cases like from shibboleth
Identity Provider and Roger's query. However, when I was populating
the classes using Bumble Bee netid in VCL, and Bumble bee netid was
not getting the educoursemember attribute values from Peoplesoft and
same with my netid.

VCL ESXI 4.1 DHCP settting

2011-07-26 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello VCL Dev,

I had a question about how other institutes are running ESXI 4.1
hypervisior and DHCP with VCL.
I wanted to know if anyone could share with me the way they configured
the network setting to work with the VM's and get a IP address from
using a DHCP server.

Could someone post how you are setting up your Virtual Switch
The Virtual Machine Port Group
The VMkernel Port Setting you used
And VMkernel Port setting you used

Something that I could as an example to make sure that my setting are
correct. An example would be ideal, something to build off of.

Also does it matter if we have extra vmnic accounts? Should it be 1
Vmnic per port?

Re: Install problems with VCL

2011-03-01 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello Fento,

Have you add the information about your Managment Node and Web Page
URL to your secrets.php file.

Also Did you setup the Mysql?

yum install mysql -y
yum install mysql-server -y
/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 mysqld on
/sbin/service mysqld start

Enter into mysql

mysql

Create a database in mysql named for use with VCL

CREATE DATABASE vcl;

create a user with SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE privileges on
the database you just created

GRANT SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE ON vcl.* TO 'vcluser'@'localhost'
IDENTIFIED BY 'YOUR VCL PASSWORD HERE';

Another Way is to manually type in

Check and Make sure

mysql -u vcldbuser2 -h localhost –p

Log in and make sure your password will match your secrets file

For the Secrets file

vim secrets.php
should be located vcl/.ht-inc/secrets.php

mv secrets-default.php secrets.php

You need to make changes to
 $vclhost, $vcldb, $vclusername, and $vclpassword to match your database setup

Hope this is helpful.

mcrypt-2.6.8 not working correctly with VCL 2.2

2011-02-14 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

I'm having a few issues with a new install of VCL 2.2

I am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6 (Tikanga)

yum install httpd mod_ssl php-gd php-mcrypt php-mysql php-xml
php-xmlrpc php-ldap

-yum php-mcrypt ins't working or being found in 5.6 in Red Hat, so I
have to set it up manuailly. I'm getting the errors in my log

Testing for required php extensions ...

* Missing these extensiosn: mcrypt. Depending on the extension,
some or all of VCL will not work.

Testing mcrypt ...

* mcrypt extension missing

Here is what I did

1) Install libmcrypt (2.5.x or better) http://mcrypt.hellug.gr/lib/index.html
I installed 2.5.8
-download and uncompress: tar z -xvf xxx.tar.gz
-cd into libmcrypt dir and type: ./configure
-when configure is done type: make
-when make is done type: make install

This worked just fine..

2) Add the library dir to /etc/ld.so.conf
-edit /etc/ld.so.conf and add: /usr/local/lib
-save file and then type the command: ldconfig
I can't run the ldconfig command but I added the options.

Install latest version of mcrypt (2.6.x or better)
http://mcrypt.hellug.gr/mcrypt/index.html
I installed 2.6.8
-download and uncompress: tar z -xvf xxx.tar.gz
-cd into mcrypt dir and type: ./configure

I then get this error. during the configure : Is there a different
version that I should be using.

*** 'libmcrypt-config --version' returned 2.4.0, but LIBMCRYPT (2.5.8)
*** was found! If libmcrypt-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of LIBMCRYPT. You may also be able to
fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If libmcrypt-config was wrong, set the environment variable LIBMCRYPT_CONFIG
*** to point to the correct copy of libmcrypt-config, and remove the
file config.cache
*** before re-running configure
configure: error: *** libmcrypt was not found
[root@vclman01 mcrypt-2.6.8]#

So to fix this issue I went out and got the libmcrypt 2.5.7 even
older. Same error

and I am still getting the same error.

What is the correct versions that I need to install. I can't find a
libmcypt newer then 2.5.8

Re: auto image capturing for imaging reservations

2011-02-10 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello Aaron Peeler,

I think this is a great idea, I have had this happen to me before and
It's no fun. I would also love to see a easy way to extend the time
frame that you can create images for. Currently it is set to 8 hours.
If there was a menu options with a time frame drop down, or even an
edit mode that would extend the time to create/modify images that
would be helpful as well as your suggested auto image patch.

Re: How to Change time out time in VCL code?

2010-11-29 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello Aaron,

We wanted both 20 minutes for the connect button and 20 minutes for the idle
time out. We are having issues with idle time out and idle connect time.
Students and Staff would like to have more leave way and 20 minutes steamed
ideal.

-Alex

I just retested today and we are still only getting 15 minutes, see attached
pictures

How to Change time out time in VCL code?

2010-11-19 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hi Aaron -

We made the changes you suggested
to /var/www/html/apache-VCL-2.1-incubating/managementnode/lib/VCL/
reserved.pm . The reservations are still timing out after 15 minutes.

The changes were applied as seen below. But it didn't change the time from
15 minutes to 20 minutes like we wanted

Let us know if we missed any steps

Here's the Reserved.pm file after change
##

*1. **LINE 315*
elsif ($acknowledge_attempts <* 240*) {
# User has approximately 20 minutes to acknowledge (5
seconds * 240 attempts)

# Print a status message every tenth attempt
if (($acknowledge_attempts % 10) == 0) {
# Print message every tenth attempt
notify($ERRORS{'OK'}, 0, "attempt
$acknowledge_attempts of 240, user has not acknowleged");
}

sleep 5;

*2. **LINE 165 *
my $connected = 0;
my $curr_time = time();
my $time_limit=* 20;*
my $time_exceeded = 0;
my $break = 0;

*3.* Restarted vcld and httpd after saving the changes

I think this is a great idea and would be a welcome change to VCL. I'm sure
we would use this for professors who want to manage their own groups and not
have full privileges.

VCL cleanup scripts and Vmware-tmp directory

2010-10-21 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

This is an ongoing question about how the VCL scripts clean up the vmware
tmp directory.

I have a few questions about the process and what gets cleaned.

What files are deleted in the vmware tmp, when the vcl runs its cleanup
scripts. Are there any directory or files that are safe to manually delete
and where are they located in that directory?

Our campus has created local storage on the each blade for the vmware tmp
files for it’s called /vmware-tmp and adding the string to to put the tmp
directory in vmware to its own folder.

Here is our current vmware configuration setup

serverd.init.fullpath = "/usr/lib/vmware/serverd/init.pl"

authd.client.port = "904"

control.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware-cmd"

authd.fullpath = "/usr/sbin/vmware-authd"

loop.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware-loop"

libdir = "/usr/lib/vmware"

vmware.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmware"

vmdir = "/virtualmachines"

dhcpd.fullpath = "/usr/bin/vmnet-dhcpd"

serverd.fullpath = "/usr/sbin/vmware-serverd"

tmpDirectory = "/vmware-tmp/"

datastore.name = "local"

datastore.localpath = "/virtualmachines/"

prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = "TRUE"

prefvmx.minVmMemPct = "100"

defaultVMPath = "/virtualmachines"

priority.grabbed = "normal"

priority.ungrabbed = "normal"

This is very helpful before we were having our tmp fill up to %100 and crash
our blades.

Our currently DF looks like this.

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda2 60948136   3384160  54418048   6% /

/dev/sda6  8123168293208   7410668   4% /home

/dev/sda5 10153988695628   8934244   8% /var

/dev/sda1   101086 11878 83989  13% /boot

tmpfs 24716364 0  24716364   0% /dev/shm

netappfiler02:/vol/sata1/virtualmachines

5610301032 1500130872 4110170160  27% /virtualmachines

/dev/sda7 49414916  35444872  11459892  76% /vmware-tmp

We are running a NFS mount to run our images off our current hardware.

The /vmware-tmp directory is slowly filling up again. This has been a huge
ongoing issue, we have already given the directory more space. We have it
limited before but within about 6 days, it’s getting full.

I know that the VCL scripts don’t point to this current custom directory and
run a cleanup.

Is there a way to change to code to clean up to a custom directory? Is there
a way to setup a cleanup script or cron job to clean up the directory after
X amount of time? I need to know what I can and can’t delete if I have to do
this manually as well?

+ 1 from Me. I would love to use 2.2 with vmware server 2.0 and Windows 7
support! I look forward to using esxi over gsx as well.

That's a persona option, no idea if my company will want to go in the same
direction.

Re: failed: cloning base image failed

2010-09-16 Thread Alexander Patterson
The solution to our problem was solve by Aaron
Thank you for fixing the code to work with our net storage we are using.

CSUEB uses NFS mounts on our NFS to storage our images, Thanks to Aaron for
modified vmware.pm.

vmware.pm is in /usr/local/vcl/lib/VCL/Module/Provisioning/

If anyone else runs into this issue, this is the solution

Thanks

failed: cloning base image failed

2010-09-08 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

Been having an issue with our system. We just added a few new blades
and had our network team move over files to clone our blades so they
work correct.

I can't create images anymore. Normal operation works, but I can't
update or create images currently.

Here is the error code I am getting.

I think that vmkfstools was deleted (I can't find it anywhere), but I
only see that tool for ESX? Do we have this tool on the VCL web site?
Or am I missing something else that is needed to make images?

Re: Image Failing Error

Hello Andy

I must of missed that the OS id was incorrect. Thank you

Any info about the time zone changes in VCL images? Or the other error?

Thanks so much

BTW

I just renamed the original file to vmwarelinux-Centos5.582-v0
changed the vmx files and everything php ect. So now both my Cent OS
images still work but both still can't create correctly.

Thanks

CentOS 5.5 Image creation fail

2010-07-08 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello All,

I'm having an issue with my Centos 5.5. I have built it just as
instructed in the boot camp.

I'm having an issue with the Image Creation. I can load up the image
and use it just fine. I'm having a problem creating an image off of
it.
I did turn of sysprep when I was asked, but anyways here is the error log.

This was build on the Vmware server and has the correct naming convention.

Creating New Image
Add Image
Add the following image?

Name:   CentOS
Owner:  ad...@local

Image Description:
CENTOS

Usage Notes:
CENTOS

Revision Comments:
CENTOS

Advanced Options:
Minimum RAM (MB):   1024
Minimum Num of Processors:  1
Minimum Processor Speed (MHz):  2000
Minimum Network Speed (Mbps):   100
Maximum Concurrent Usage:
Available for checkout: Yes
Check for logged in user: Yes
User group allowed to log in: Any
Use sysprep:No

I get the Server reponded "Connectiong closed"

Showing that the imaging process has kicked me out and is working.

Image failing at resource ready

2010-05-01 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

I am getting an error one one of my new Images that was built in Vmware
Server.
I had to built it in Vmware Server due to it's Size.

19.1 GB

The Software is Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium, It's Windows XP SP3
Firewall is off
SingleCore Image, i have built my other 30 that work the same way. This one
is not working.

I can SSH into the image. It works just fine when I load in in vmware
server. When I try to load it into the system. I always get stuck at
resource ready.

resource ready(43)0:00/0:221:09
failed: process failed after trying to load or make available

It doesn't matter what Vmware guest it uses, all of them fail at the same
point.

Here is the Log

Connecting to Linux and Solaris remotely with VCL?

2010-04-09 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

I wanted to know how everyone else is connecting to there local Linux or
Solaris Labs with VCL?
We have a few labs that here on campus that are running Linux and Solaris.
We have students here who connect to these labs via remote. We want to move
these computers to a rack and only allow users to connect to these computer
remotely. We want to use VCL to do this so the user doesn't have to be on
campus to gain access to these machines. We need to gain access to our
local Solaris 10 and Linux build labs. These machines are already loaded
with the current software the student need access to.

They need to be able to log into the current images of locally campus hosted
Linix and Solaris boxes and be able to access a gui.

What program to do you use to setup this up in the VCL environment? Do you
have a recommendation of what program to use and how to do this in VCL?

Also lets say we want to do a Windows to Linux Image
Also do you a requirement for having a Windows box with a VNC that that is
perfected to do this type of action in the VCL environment?

CentOS 5.4 Linux Vmware guest accounts won't release

2010-04-03 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

We have our CentOS 5.4 Linux Image. It works just fine when we load it in
the VCL system We are able to log in and use the image, in our current
vmware guest accounts.
The problem we are having with our system is that when another image like a
Windows Based images tries to reload over the current CentOS 5.4 guest
account, it will fail.

I went into our blades with the image running and it's currently on and
waiting. It stays loaded in the system and acts like a normal image. It
won't release the image to load another in it's place. I have to manually
shut down the machine in vmware server and delete the inventory in order for
a windows based machine to use that vmware guest account that the CentOS was
loaded on.
I also checked the vmware logs and the image is created correctly. I can get
a Window based machine to boot on the guest account but it will fail during
machine booting. The Centos stays in the inventory and we get

vmguest-6 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX failed ad...@local VCL 24x7 CentOS 5.4
(selected by system) vcl

I can change this guest account back to available in the system
I have also tried to load an image in this place via the system page. That
also fails.
If i leave it available, when a user tries to load a image and this guest
account is selected the image will fail. All other images will fail on this
account but the CentOS5.4.

The CentOS5.4 will load just fine on this guest account nothing else.

Printer Drivers not installing

2010-04-01 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello

Anyone have a fix on why IP printing with Windows 7 RDP is not working
correctly.

Is there a way to have the IP printer drives that are installed on a Windows
7 machines that are connecting to a XP Vmware Image will be able to pull the
drivers and be able to use IP printing with RDP?

The local printer drivers work in Windows 7, but IP printers are not showing
up in our XP images. When the user is connecting from a Windows 7 machine.

Anyone else having these issues?

Windows XP 64 Bit NETWORK Card Issues

2010-03-24 Thread Alexander Patterson
Hello,

Just wanted to know with the VCL system, how are you getting Windows XP 64
bit to work correctly.
When I load up bridged network drivers I get Intel 1000 Drivers installed
because those are the 64 Bit Drivers.
The VMX file says it's Windows XP 64 Bit
When I go to load up my images they will never boot. When I load into the
machine to see why; it is due to the network driver not being installed.
The network is isntalled and working fine when I load it Vmware Server on
the blade.
When the VM guest is loaded up, it changes over to Other Operating system
and never installs the correct drivers.
I have already tired to manually changing the VMX file for Windows XP 64 Bit
network drivers.

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" is the default and after the machine boots,
It ask to install the network drivers on the blade as it loads and never
boots in the system.

New Hardware found Ethernet controllers

I have tired and change to "e1000". 'ethernet0.virtualDev = "vlance"
'ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmx" Says not a 64 Bit Driver ect.

How is everyone else doing this?
