IMHO, Veritas has a long history of omitting or hiding pack/patch level
information from any sort of quality control.

Until customers demand they do better, they won't ... and it appears to
this customer (from a small shop, far from marketing and development

[Veritas-bu] Version information after FP9 Upgrade

2005-11-03 Thread Isamar Maia
I just upgraded my Windows NBU 4.5 Datacenter client with FP9 patch.
I use that Windows client basically for NBU Java Console to access my remote
Solaris Master/Media server.
The problem is that when I open "Help->About", it is still showing FP6
instead of FP9.

I already checked the history.txt log file and no problem happened
during the installation
process.
The file C:\Program Files\Veritas\Netbackup\version.txt shows
correctly the patched version NetBackup 4.5FP_9S1443.

How can I confirm that I really have FP9 Java Administrative console
running in this machine?

Thanks,

if there are features that are required that exist in
6 but not 5, the choice is clear. if 6 doesnt offer
anything new for what you require, go 5.x. you can
always have a test env running 6 to make sure that any
future upgrade to 6 will have as few bumps as possible
while letting you see the new features...

[Veritas-bu] Write errors defaults

2005-11-03 Thread Adrian Saidac

To all, hello,

I have a general question regarding the way how NBU is handling the
write errors on tape

The default is 3 in 12 hours per tape on the same or different Tape drive

So if there are write errors on tape is NBU marking the spots and
continue or counting 3 x same spot

How about restores for a tape with 2 errors ?
It is my understanding that for the 2 errors the backup will exit with
status 0

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Adrian Saidac

[Veritas-bu] loadvmmedia.ctl and loadbpmedia.ctl in goodies

2005-11-03 Thread Jon Bousselot

FYI,

Anybody who is using NB 5.x and is using the DIY database features found
in /usr/openv/netbackup/goodies/mediascripts may have found this already.

In my config, using an Oracle database, I had to amend two of the lines
in the loadvmmedia.ctl script to properly insert the data from the
vmquery.out file. The README file in this directory explains what all
this does and how you could use it. The loadvmmedia.ctl and
loadbpmedia.ctl scripts also explain what each one does.

From the loadvmmedia.ctl file:

off_slot POSITION(351:356) NULLIF (351:351)='-',
off_ses_id POSITION(359:364) NULLIF (359:359)='-',

While running the loadvmmedia.ctl script, it would fail on these two
fields, and I had to add the NULLIF statements.

After that, it all works fine.
I'm running NB 5.1 on Solaris 9, and the database is Oracle 10g on
Solaris 10.

2005-11-03 Thread Wayne T Smith
The specific fixes are in the MP3A readme, available in the downloads at
the veritas support site.

But the real difference to me is that one be at MP3A in order to apply
the (v5.1) security fix. I realize the security fix is not strictly
required if one's firewall is done right, but I'd rather put on the
security fix and avoid one of my machine owner's screwing up. Note:
hackers have been pounding on my ports 13722 for a week or so now.

But certainly Dean is correct ... with v5, your master must always
remain at the highest level, but media servers may trail in maintenance
and still be supported.

I don't understand your reluctance to apply MP3A and the security fix on

all your servers. Is there something in MP3A that you're trying to

With very few exceptions, the quality of v5.1 has improved with each

I'm pretty sure at this point that it was happening because the mount

/mnt/filer and then the share was mounted onto /filer, rather than
/mnt/filer.

this link deeked out netbackup, so it couldn't see that the mount was

I haven't been able to thouroughly test this theory yet, though.

thought it was mounted on /mnt/filer then I browsed the backup

Paul,

I'm seeing a similar thing associated with a new post I'll do. I
found the df or bdf commands were not listing the "."
directories. The backups were walking all of the .snapshot
directories and backing up considerably more data than expected.

Jeff

Cant see how that could fool netbackup unless follow symbolic links is
checked. There is an option to follow them. I can see if this was set
and becuase your NFS volume was mounted from a sym link that it may
ignore the fact follow NFS wasnt checked, but it should have picked
/filler up as a sym link to start with and just backed the link up and
not where it goes.

You don't
mention what OS. But there is a way to have the request sent to Syslog/Eventlog
you could then write a script/cmd file to search for it and send an email. I did

Hi Frank,

I don't think you have yet stated what NB version you're on or what OS
you're using?

We experienced jobs failing with 134's instead of 196's after upgrading
our Master & Media servers to 5.1 MP2 on Win2K. The issue was fixed by
upgrading to 5.1 MP3(It also fixed exit status 41 errors we were getting
when backing up servers that were running Legato Diskxtender). You'll
probably want to upgrade straight to 5.1 MP3A, to fix the Java
vulnerability, if this applies to you.

The 134 error can be reduced if not eliminated by ensuring the shared
memory of the NBU server is set properly. Also, you may notice 134 when
there is no storage unit readily available, meaning in use by another
backup/restore job when the backup starts; however, this should go away
when the resource becomes available. I have noticed that the if the job
opens without a resource available and then the start window closes
before the resource becomes available you will get the 134 error instead
of the expected 196. HTH

indicate an environmental issue, in my experience. Essentially, your media
servers are probably being swamped by jobs for the duration of the backup
window. I've seen this recently, where a couple of Win2k media servers, each
with 4 non-SSO LTO2 drives, were trying to backup about 200 slow clients.
MPX was set uncomfortably high, to 6 to be exact, but even so about 20% of
the clients were hitting the queue and never getting a chance to get
to tape.

The solution was to
stand up another media server, Solaris as it happens, which provided another 4
drives and allowed me to turn the multiplexing level down to 4. Hey presto, the
134s were never seen again.

[Veritas-bu] Pending request for Tape

2005-11-03 Thread Vikash Gupta

Hi,

I need some sort of notification email from NetBackup server side when
there is a pending request for Tape.

This is required because while
doing the restore NetBackup gives huge list of tapes and I know it's bogus list.

This email will help us the NetBackup admins to quickly looks for
the tapes and deposit them.

How can I do the above activity
?

Thanks & Regards
Vikash Gupta

[Veritas-bu] Re: Incrementals turning into full

2005-11-03 Thread Vincent_Mase
I had this problem a while back when we were running NBU4.5 FP6. For some
reason there was no
record in the image catalog of a full ever running for the client in the Policy
even though a full
backup had run. If you check Installpath\NetBackup\db\images\hostname\ you
will see folders
named "somestringofnumbers" inside one of the folders there should be a file
similar to
policyname_numbers_FULL, and _FULL.f. If those files does not exist Netbackup
assumes a full never
ran for the Policy and by default will run a full backup regardless of the type
of backup scheduled.
We upgraded to 5.1 and this problem went away.
As a workaround I was able to trick NBU into thinking a full ran by changing
the backup selection
of the Policy to include only a single file and then running the FULL schedule.
  I then changed the
backup selections back to include all the data I wanted to backup and then
incrementals ran as an
incrementals should.

  We have been experiencing a
problem lately.  We do a full on a client on one day successfully. The
next day we do an incremental, but get message that full has not been done,
and it does another full.  So far Veritas has not been able to come up
with a cause.  Wondering if anyone else is seeing this problem.  It
  is becoming very frequent.

  Thanks in
  advance.

RE: [Veritas-bu] cross mount points? NFS?

2005-11-03 Thread Paul Keating
Title: Message

yes,
the backup was traversing the snapshots as well.
however, it shouldn't have been an issue, since "follow NFS" was turned
off.

I'm
pretty sure at this point that it was happening because the mount point was
created (/mnt/filer) and a symlink created /filer -> /mnt/filer and then the
share was mounted onto /filer, rather than /mnt/filer.

this
link deeked out netbackup, so it couldn't see that the mount was of type
"NFS".

I
haven't been able to thouroughly test this theory yet,
though.

I will be looking this up shortly, but I forget where to
find it –

Specifically, when I add a box, I only see Solaris 7,8,9 and
not 10 Sparc or X86, does anyone remember the command to fix this?

Thanks,

Justin.

Hermawan,

No media servers or clients can be at a higher level than your master
server. So you'll need to patch the master, and the new media server,
but not necessarily the other media servers.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Multiplexing / Streaming

2005-11-03 Thread Dean
Simon

I believe this will happen -

Your first job will kick off at 6PM with 3 streams. All these streams
will go to one tape drive, because you have the MPX value on the
schedule set at 3.

The second policy will start at 7PM and generate another 3 streams. All
these streams will go to a second tape drive, for the same reason.

With the schedule's MPX setting at 3, you will never get more than 3
streams going to the drive that that schedule is backing up to,
regardless of what MPX setting you have on the storage unit.

I always set the MPX value on the schedule to the maximum (32 if I
recall correctly) and manage the number of streams at the storage unit
level.

We could could give more specific real-world advice if we knew exactly
what you are trying to do. Are the clients IP connected, or are they
media servers? If IP, what network speed? What kind of tape drives? Do
you want to be able to spread the I/O out across all 5 tape drives?

Cheers
Dean

RE: [Veritas-bu] error code 134

2005-11-03 Thread Marianne van den Berg

Have a
look at these TechNotes:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264495.htm
Why is status 134 an appropriate status and
DISABLE_RESOURCES_BUSY not suggested?

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/276200.htm
STATUS CODE: A Status 134 "unable to process
request because the server resources are busy" error occurs and jobs requeue.
The client's bpbkar process unexpectedly runs up to hundreds of times within an
hour.

Also
upgrade to the latest patch level - there are lots of fixes for
134.
