[Veritas-bu] Excluding jobs for file systems when using ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES

2006-01-06 Thread Jim VandeVegt
Solaris master, 5.0 MP5, also on MP1 before upgrade...I'm noticing mostly on Linux clients that using the common combination of multiple streams and the directive ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES creates streams for removable / auxilliary / pseudo / memory / kernel file systems like:/dev/pts/proc/proc/bus/*/dev/shm/media/*Generally, I have these listed in exclude_list. No data is slurped from them and written to tape.Is there a way to prevent these streams from ever being created in this scenario? It would be nice to not have the chaff. As a sub-topic ... and maybe both of these are feature requests ... it also would be nice if a file system mount point is in the exclude list a job should not be created for that file system either. Thanks,

In addition, If you would like to exclude directories and or files from

Exclude data using the exclude tape, policy and schedule.
The Include function will dominate over any excludes.

All Windows-based clients will work fine (NT4-2k3) with this.
ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES will back up the registry on the NT4 boxes and the
System State on the newer boxes. Where things get messy is when you try
to explicitly back up drives. For example, on Win 2k3, if your filelist
is C:\, D:\, it will NOT get the System State:\

Possibly? Check the tape device drivers, ensure that the correct and current
tape device drivers are installed. Veritas also supplies a set
Of good drivers on there installation CD's under additional products.
Block size is also very important for Windows - 64k as mentioned in previous
Reply should be the Max.

A correction for the third condition is adding a larger value
CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT value to your bp.conf on your client. It'll make
the media server more tolerant to slow conditions on the client. I find
it especially valuable on my large database servers.

I ahve a value of 10800 seconds per client as a matter of course now:

CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT = 10800

I've seen at least 3 different classification of 84 errors:

1. Bad tape or tape drive. You've eliminated this.
2. A full disk staging unit. You're not using DSSUs.
3. Connectivity issues between media server and tape drive. This is
where the fun happens... Check your switch ports for errors on the
ports. I had this happen when I had my ISLs set for 2Gbps and found out
later that the fibre wasn't capable of being driven at 2Gbps for that
distance. I dropped my ISL speed to 1Gbps and it's working fine (still
out of spec and giving me buffer credit issues but error-free from the
backup point of view). My fibre is actually being replaced now.

Have a good look at your SAN switch logs and the host error logs. When
I had my issue, I was logging scsi errors on the hosts (even though the
drives are on the other end of a fibre/scsi bridge).

RE: [Veritas-bu] Cleaning Tape Process NBU 5.1 Not functioning

2006-01-06 Thread Mark . Donaldson

Dean
pegged the problem with the library reading the rightmost characters, not the
leftmost set.  Find your library manual and fix that.  Delete the
incorrect tape entry entirely and reinventory to get the tape defined correctly
(or just manually fix it all - check the vmquery output for your current tape to
make sure it's defined as a cleaning tape).

Barcode rules are intended for automatically managing more than one
tape.  For example, for cleaning tapes, my barcode rule is

==rule number:
0barcode tag:  CLNmedia type:   HC_CLNpool
name:    Nonecleanings:
50description:  HCART Cleaning
Tape==

The
"tag" value is simply "CLN".  Any tape injected starting "CLN" will be
added as a HCART cleaning tape.  You probably shouldn't define a barcode
rule for a single tape - it's just wasteful and doesn't help you on the
next cleaning tape to be injected.

I've
got barcode rules that identiffy all tape numbers greater than 5000 to be LTO2
tapes while tapes less than this are LTO1 tapes.  Very magical when
managing more than one type of tape in your library.

Anyway

All Windows-based clients will work fine (NT4-2k3) with this.
ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES will back up the registry on the NT4 boxes and the
System State on the newer boxes. Where things get messy is when you try
to explicitly back up drives. For example, on Win 2k3, if your filelist
is C:\, D:\, it will NOT get the System State:\

RE: [Veritas-bu] Cleaning Tape Process NBU 5.1 Not functioning

2006-01-06 Thread King, Cheryl
Title: Message

I don’t bother using the barcode
rules for cleaning tapes.  Now that I have them inserted in the robot, I just eject
it out when it’s used up and put the label on a new cleaning tape.  Then
inventory it back in and use vmadm or the NBU admin console to change the # cleanings
left.

For adding them the first time I use NBU
admin console Actions-> New-> New Volumes.  You’ll have to delete
CLN0001 out of the inventory (right click, delete) first.  Then add it with the
correct media type, 1 volume, media ID CLN001 slot #, volume pool None, max
cleanings 40.  My barcodes are only 6 characters long and I’m using STK
but I think it should work the same way.

Tape Process NBU 5.1 Not functioning

Morning

I am having some problems getting Netbackup to use a
Cleaning Tape on a NBU 5.1 MP1 Win2k3 Master Server.

I have a Cleaning Tape called CLN0001L as a Barcode. I have
inserted into my HP EVL Tape Library into SLOT 1.

Netbackup sees the tape as Media ID N000L1

Now, reading the SysAdmin guide, it talks about creating a
rule for barcodes, therefore I created a rule as follows:

Barcode Tag CLN0001

Max Mounts 40

Media Type 1/2 Cleaning Tape

Volume Pool NONE (and I have confirmed the tape is in this
pool)

Description - Cleaning Tape

So, rule created, I tried to use the GUI to run a clean but
netbackup does not see the tape or actually recognise it!

Im wondering if anyone can advise where I have gone wrong? I
can do a clean from the Robot, but its a very long process

Thank you

So from the Robot

I have seen this before when backing up up file/print
server 1.2TB + data .  The windows and some other  servers with
terabyte plus data have been configured as a SAN media servers . SAN media
servers gives these servers direct access to DISK staging unit / Library ,so
they don`t send data over network . We have dedicated GIG network for backups
which always helps .You may want to consider putting  your file server
over GIG network and configure it as a SAN media server.

I've seen at least 3 different classification of 84 errors:

1. Bad tape or tape drive. You've eliminated this.
2. A full disk staging unit. You're not using DSSUs.
3. Connectivity issues between media server and tape drive. This is where
the fun happens... Check your switch ports for errors on the ports. I
had this happen when I had my ISLs set for 2Gbps and found out later
that the fibre wasn't capable of being driven at 2Gbps for that

[Veritas-bu] Performance Tuning with mixture of SDLT and LTO-2

2006-01-06 Thread Paul Porcelli
Hi folks,
I'm looking into the performance tuning side of things in Netbackup 5.1

I have been checking the stats in the bptm logs and it looks like we
could get some performance gains by tweaking SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS and
NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS. The Data Producer has much larger wait values than
the Data Consumer.

We are using a L700 Tape Library which has 6 SCSI attached SDLT
drives(Quantum SDLT 320) and 2 fibre attached LTO-2 drives(IBM Ultrium
TD2 38D0).

According to the VERITAS documentation , the SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS value
should be set depending on the Max IO size of the drives used. We are
currently running with only one media server so how should we choose the
value ?
I don't know the MAX IO sizes for the two different types of drives but
I'm guessing they are going to be different. If anyone know the MAX IO
sizes for those drives please let me know.

Any suggestions on how to tackle the problem of the diffent types of
drives ?
If we add a couple of media servers then I guess I would just vary the
values on each media server and restrict the media servers to using one
drive type only. In the menatime, that is not an option.

Thanks.
Paul

Re: [Veritas-bu] Cleaning Tape Process NBU 5.1 Not functioning

2006-01-06 Thread william . d . brown
The problem will be in the setup of your library, not in NetBackup. You
are reporting the rightmost 6 characters of the barcode. Normally the
library will read the 'L1' 'L2' etc and identify the tape type - NetBackup
does not see those letters.Hunt in the library manuals for how to set
the way the library handles barcodes. I don't know about EVL libraries -
what are they underneath the HP badge?

Or I could walk round...!

Might be something wrong there.

I don't know about that HP library (rebadged Quantum or ATL?). With STK
libraries, if you put a cleaning tape in the correct slot, the library
will automatically clean the drives when required, and NetBackup doesn't
need to know about it - it doesn't even know about the cleaning tape.

Yes. If you have Unix clients you can push the maintenance paks out from
the server, but for Windows clients you need to manually update each client
(and usually reboot).

[Veritas-bu] Cleaning Tape Process NBU 5.1 Not functioning

2006-01-06 Thread WEAVER, Simon
Title: Message

Morning
I am having some
problems getting Netbackup to use a Cleaning Tape on a NBU 5.1 MP1 Win2k3 Master
Server.

I have a Cleaning
Tape called CLN0001L as a Barcode. I have inserted into my HP EVL Tape Library
into SLOT 1.
Netbackup sees the
tape as Media ID N000L1

Now, reading the
SysAdmin guide, it talks about creating a rule for barcodes, therefore I created
a rule as follows:

Barcode Tag
CLN0001
Max Mounts
40
Media Type 1/2
Cleaning Tape
Volume Pool NONE
(and I have confirmed the tape is in this pool)
Description -
Cleaning Tape

So, rule created, I
tried to use the GUI to run a clean but netbackup does not see the tape or
actually recognise it!

Im wondering if
anyone can advise where I have gone wrong? I can do a clean from the Robot, but
its a very long process

Thank
you

So from the
Robot
