[Veritas-bu] Is GNU tar --dereference option available?

2006-02-12 Thread Christopher Jay Manders

Hi,

So, we want to actually back up any data that is contained in symbolic
linked material on one set of systems.

If I were to use GNU tar I would specify the '--dereference' option.

Anyone know whether this is supported, or will be, in NBU?

TIA!

[Veritas-bu] EC6 - The backup failed to backup the requested files

2006-02-12 Thread Major, Rusty

When running an
Oracle backup that calls a script, the backups sometimes fail with this error
code. What does it really mean happened? I am guessing that the script said
backup /x/file, but it's not there. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetApp VTL

NetApp purchased Alacritus and redesigned the package such that it will
run on a NetApp head. I just purchased 6 of the NearStore VTL 600s and
am working on putting them into production. They are a FAS3050 head
running the VTL software instead of ONTAP.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

[Veritas-bu] Using rsync for the NetBackup catalog...

2006-02-12 Thread Michael L. Barrow
Someone had posted about this and I deleted the email before I replied.
I just wanted to follow up to what other folks had said.

Basically, it works well. The only advice that I would have is to create
a snapshot of the filesystem and then run the rsync using the read-only
copy as the source. That way, the filesystem is self-consistent and you
will prevent the errors about missing files, etc.

With Solaris, look at the fsnap command. With Linux, utilize the
snapshot feature of LVM. Other OSes have similar functionality. You will
achive better and more consistent results with the snapshots than without.

Good luck!

RE: [Veritas-bu] Can a 4.5FP_6 media server backup a 5.1 client?

2006-02-12 Thread Venkataramanan, Radhakrishnan
There is a problem, sometimes you may not able to restore files properly. I had
backups running for 4.5 master with 5.1 Media server. When i had restore there
was a problem it could restore somefiles although there was no issues in the
tape I couldn't restore the files. Veritas support simple told they won't this
configuration. I then duplicated the tapes using nompx option and got it
restored.

You could try, although you may get a message along the lines of

All my master servers are 5.1.x, some of the media servers
however are still running at 4.5_FP6.

Will there be any issues if I upgrade all of my clients to 5.1
as the media servers are still at the 4.5_FP6 revision?

1 version higher on Master and Media servers than the Clients is
acceptable in most cases, not the other way around. Clients should never
be a higher version than the Master or media servers.

but
bigger is better if your stuff all goes bigger).
