RE: [Veritas-bu] Bpmedia -movedb problem

2006-02-14 Thread Stefanos Monovasios
The bpmedia -movedb moves a part of netbackup database. You can't change a
master server with this.
If you use 4.5 or 5.x just copy the /volmgr/database/ directory and
/netbackup/db/media/mediadb Then reconfigure the library and the tape drive
and your tapes are now moved to the new server.
You have to move the db/image dir and other files to complete the move of
the master server

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Bpmedia -movedb problem

Hello All

I'm moving a master/media server to a new machine. I'm trying to use the
procedure in this technote: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/266720.htm

But I keep getting:
2bpmedia: INITIATING: version NetBackup 5.1 created: 0
2bpmedia: client/server handshaking failed
client/server handshaking failed
2bpmedia: EXIT status = 26

Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated

Regards
Michael

[Veritas-bu] RE: How to backup open files using VSP

2006-02-14 Thread Drunen van, Marcel
V.T.,

Using VSP or VSS will only partially solve your problem. For instance,
never expect VSP to make a proper backup of any database, regardless if
it is SQL, Exchange or Access. For database backups there are two
options: (1) shut down the application using a bpstart_notify script and
make a backup of the flat files. (2) Install the corresponding extension
and make 'hot' backups of the database.

For system files and open documents VSP does not always succeed. In
order to make a snapshot, VSP waits for a quiescent moment. If this
moment soes not come, the snapshot is not created, and the file is
skipped. Notorious examples of this are system files like perfmon
counters. Since you probably don't need the majority of these files, you
might as well exclude them from backup.

The best thing is to configure VSP and then make a problems report after
every backup session. For each of the open files mentioned, decide
whether you really need the file and then take the appropriate action.

Regards,

Marcel

[Veritas-bu] interesting behaviour with NDMP and NFS backups

2006-02-14 Thread Paul Keating
Title: Message

Discovered something
in the lab that I found interesting...
if I back upa
NAS via NDMP (level 0), then do a FULL backup of the same unix style QTree, via
NFS, a few hours later.
subsequent level 1
NDMP backups backup *almost* the entire QTree.

It seems as if the
NFS backup tweaks each file enough that the Level 1 NDMP dump sees it
asnew/modified.

Not really
interesting I suppose, in that it's pretty obvious that NBU is touching files
(try doing an NFS backup of a RO FS.).

Just something I
noticed and thought I'd throw out there for anyone who happens to be doing both
(for whatever reason) and theought there would be no
interdependancy.

[Veritas-bu] Question on upgrading NetBackup

2006-02-14 Thread Justin Piszcz
When upgrading NetBackup, you have three main components:1) Master2) Media3) ClientWhat is the recommended way to upgrade these three components?Master - Media - Client?I believe in the
6.0 documentation it says the media servers should be up to the 6.0 revision first before upgrading the master server. However, I am in the midst of a 4.5x - 5.1x upgrade, any comments?Justin.

Justin,

We did
our 4.5 to 5.1 upgrade quite a while back. No issues, no problems. Just as the
note says, master, media client. Unix and w2k clients you can do at your
leisure, w2k3 needs to go to mp4 most rikkitik ora DRfullrestore will blow the
sysstate and you will have an inoperable machine.

[Veritas-bu] DLO information

2006-02-14 Thread Cornely, David
Title: DLO information

Hello,

Has anyone deployed and is anyone using the Desktop Laptop Option under Netbackup? I'm trying to get a general idea of cost per client and overall usability.

Also, is option part of Netbackup Enterprise Server or some other strain of NBU? Thanks!

-Dave

Re: [Veritas-bu] DLO information

2006-02-14 Thread Michael Anderson
NetBackup DLO is a standalone application that
essentially moves data from the desktop / laptop to
another storage location. There aren't any ties into
NetBackup at all so you don't have to install server
to use DLO. Backup Exec DLO is an actual module that
plugs into Backup Exec Server. Functionally they are
the same.

Not sure how detailed you wanted an answer on
useability but it does work. Configuration can be
automated at the client level so that specific
attributes are applied when the client first connects
to the server.

Costs are around $20-25 per client.

2006-02-14 Thread Ambrose, Monte
I tested it and it has some features I like and some I do not

I like: Small SQL DB overhead
   Backs up to file shares
Backs up files as they change
Caches on the desktop/laptop if requested
   Network throttling
   Easily deployed to users
   Support was very responsive

I don't like: No single instance store
Concerned about scaling in large environments

No migration path from the old NBUPro product it
is
Replacing.
No good active directory integration at the time
I tested
it.

Monte, what version are you running? I thought version 6 includes some
of the things that are on your don't like list, like the single
instance store and better active directory integration?

I am looking at implementing version 6 in the next while and would
appreciate any ones feed backup about that version . . .

Thanks, Scott
