[Veritas-bu] Oracle RMAN backups and media IDs

2006-06-19 Thread Paul Keating
When using the Netbackup Oracle Agent, and a client initiated backup
is written, does the Oracle apps retain any record of media ID?
f'rinstance, if a backup is run, then the tape is bpduplicated to
another media ID, then the 2nd copy is promoted to primary.
When a restore is attempted, will the proper tape be accessed?
I'm assuming the application tracks something like the image ID, and
netbackup will figure out the proper media.

Providing it was a FULL Backup, the logs are committed to the
Database. Therefore any .log files should have been removed from the partition
or drive where the .log files were present :-)

You only need to worry if the .log files are present AFTER a full
Backup has completed. As this is incorrect!

Also, be sure to check the status of your drive / partition
containing the .log files before a backup, and note how many are
present.

Finally, NEVER delete any log files manually. Exchange handles all
of this for you.

To see the oracle instances in jbpSA you need to create the oratab

should use like below.

database_sid:oracle_home_dir:N # don't up the instance during the boot.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Catalog Backup Error

2006-06-19 Thread WEAVER, Simon

Jonathan
Ideally yes! What you should do is enable logging for BPTM on the server
performing the catalog backup. 174 could be Network time out related or
(hope not!!) SCSI or hardware tape drive issue.

What if you manually kick off the backup of the catalog? Also Network would
be a play in this if you have media servers as well.

NBU Datacenter version 4.5 FP9.

While running catalog backups manually or automatically it fails with error
174 - media manager - system error occurred(174). Any ideas? Do I
troubleshoot the catalog backups in the same manner I work on normal backup
errors?

Thanks!

Simon,Thanks for your points,After i rebooted the nodes of

Providing it was a
FULL Backup, the logs are committed to the Database. Therefore any .log
files should have been removed from the partition or drive where the .log
files were present :-)

You only need to worry
if the .log files are present AFTER a full Backup has completed. As this is
incorrect!

Also, be sure to check
the status of your drive / partition containing the .log files before a
backup, and note how many are present.

Finally, NEVER delete
any log files manually. Exchange handles all of this for
you.

Thanks.

Its possible Carlos - wondering if its underlying
problems of the old media servers that were destroyed. I am going to erase the
tapes and relabel them just in case.

Backups worked fine last night though

   Hi Simon,

Was the tape mounted in the
sime drive of the first error?
   Could also have had some
communication problem with the drive, I already had issues with SCSI/Fiber
communications durIng the backup and the NetBackup to interpret like a media
  error.
