[Veritas-bu] How to make a single tape drive operable

2006-07-06 Thread krish . subramanian

Hi,

I am unable to mount tapes in a single
tape drive. When trying to assign any request to this drive, it says drive
not ready or inoperable.  However, i am able to see the drive status
as UP through the NB Java console.

Any help in this regard is appreciated.

2006-07-06 Thread Mansell, Richard

Do you have the option to create a disk staging unit? That is what we
use to back up servers on our slower links and works well as the data
then takes minutes to copy to tape rather than hours straight to tape
from the network. We also use compression for the very very slow links.

[Veritas-bu] NBU: small office WAN config - deal? or no deal?

2006-07-06 Thread Siano, James C

Hello:

Deal or no deal? Or should I say - remote media server or no remote
media server?

I've got an instance of NBU 5.0 mp3 doing backup chores for a good bevy
of Windows and Unix machines pretty much limited to a relatively close
WAN all attached to main fiber backbone. One Master /media media server
combo attached to a Qualstar AIT4 robotic.

However, I've got odd ball machine is multiple router hops away in
another state and another part of the country -- on a relatively shared,
slow link. Backup times because on the host at this location to the
Qualstar are way more than they should be that and causes a tape drive
to be tied up. The entire window suffers.

Would it make any sense to place a small tape device at the remote site
and install a local media server? (DEAL) I'm think, the main NBU
instance in my data center would do all the
controlling/tracking/scheduling but without the overhead of pulling the
data across the wire to the local robotic.
I have another remote office with about 4 wintel boxes that could take
on the same notional scheme.

My other option (NO DEAL) would to put standalone Backup Exec instances
at each of the remote sites and have all local tape and
scheduling/controlling. The remote offices don't have dedicated IT
support staff.

I'm hoping I could put everything under one Netbackup umbrella.

Let me know your thoughts. Deal or no deal.

Sincerely,

MP3 is better than MP2. However, MP3 is *MUCH* worse than 5.1 for us.

I expect we'll be seeing new binaries shortly. There's no doubt in
anybody's mind that the scheduler is still defective. Some jobs simply
will not get scheduled. If you've already upgraded to 6.0, then very
carefully check every mount point of every policy and make sure that all
of the jobs really are running. We've found many jobs that simply
didn't run with no failures, even with MP3. Some of the jobs that don't
get scheduled include DSSUs.

We have not yet identified a pattern as to why some jobs get scheduled
and others don't. If we can find that, I expect we'll get a fix faster.

I've heard rumors that Veritas has a "get well" program for NetBackup 6.
Hopefully they can get it out of the ICU quickly.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Multiplexing problem

2006-07-06 Thread Jerry Vochteloo
These things will determine if multiple jobs run

Multiplexing in the storage unit
Multiplexing in the schedule
Max jobs/clients (global) set to more then one (if you are also multistreaming)
Max jobs this client
Max jobs per policy
Number of drives in STU
Max of concurrent drives used for backup

Very configurable, right :)

If any of these are set to one, then you won't get multiple jobs. Btw if you do
make changes, make sure that bpsched (if
you are running 5.x) has died before running them again

Demystification summary: VSP is "default: on" only if you install it
(why would you install it and want it to default to off?) and the
installation of VSP's predecessor included a boot to make it active.

You first control VSP by including it (the default) during installation.
OTM (4.5 and earlier) was the same way. Haven't installed a Win client
in ages, but it is one of those little installation GUI blocks that have
a "do not install" option. From the Installation Guide for Windows:

during the installation process you have the option of
installing VERITAS Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP)

By default, [...] the server uses the following Windows

  clients (5.0 or later):

o Windows Open File Backup is enabled on the client.
o The snapshot provider for the client is VSP. [...]

> Perhaps the power outage made VSP work?

If this were OTM (older NetBackup equivalent of VSP), I'd say it was the
reboot. Including OTM in the client installation generated a deferrable
reboot after installation so it could load as a device driver. The
NetBackup 6.0 Installation Guide says

Note You may need to reboot the system for the changes to
  take effect.

Until demonstrated otherwise, I'd expect VSP to behave like OTM WRT
needing a boot to set up properly. Is it possible that the boxes that
had WOFB issues weren't booted after client installation?

There are 2 large players in the encryption appliance market - NetApp
(which bought Decru) and NeoScale. These products may be expensive
(which is relative to the value of your data) but are essentially
transparent - you plug them in and the data goes through them on the way
from the media servers to the tape drives. Once you've solved the
problem for one client, you've solved it for them all. Our approach
will be (as soon as our purchase req is approved) to encrypt everything.
That way you'll not have to worry about missing a client and losing a
tape with critical data still unencrypted (or discovering the hard way
that one of your users moved a file to a different client that wasn't
encrypted).

There is a
NetBackup Encryption Option that you can purchase on a per client basis that
encrypted the data from the client all the way to the tape. The encryption
strength can be set anywhere form 40 or 6 bit DES up to 256 bit AES
(assuming you have NBU 5.1 or higher).
Bear in mind that
encryption will make the data essentially uncompressible so turn on software
compression on the client of you want it and use the uncompressed tapes
drives. Since encryption (and compression) will take place on the client, it
will impact backup speed and varies by how high the encryption is
set.
The other option is
look for hardware compression between the Media server and the tape
drives.

I've been using the Encryption option. I've found that the BlowFish
cipher is a good balance between speed and security.

Encrypting your backups is a really good idea if you are sending them
offsite. Incidents of stolen backup tapes with sensitive personal
information are turning into a more common news event. It's probably
more dangerous than having a laptop stolen since a laptop will
probably just be resold where the tapes are only stolen for the data
on them.

Using software compression is not really feasible for me and I don't
recommend it. It affects the speed far more than the encryption. It
is much better suited for the situation where you have slow pipes and
fast CPUs. If your network and your tape drives are fast and modern,
You need your data to be available as rapidly as possible and not
slowed down by compression.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Multiplexing problem

2006-07-06 Thread Shane Liebling
A couple things to keep in mind that can trip you up w/ multiplexing
(and have done so to me in the past):

1) Configuration - The tape drive needs to be set up to multiplex and,
if you really want to get the most bang for the buck, the policy
should be set to multistream as well.

2) Media retention levels - you cannot multiplex policies with
different retention levels to a single tape. f you have 3 policies w/
retention levels 2, 3, and 3, only the latter two will run if the tape
in the drive is an RL3 tape.

    What are the
tools available to doing encryption outside of Netbackup and than taking that
encrypted data to tape?? Are these products expensive??? We may have a
requirement at our site for such thing for few servers.

There is a
NetBackup Encryption Option that you can purchase on a per client basis that
encrypted the data from the client all the way to the tape.

When a backup is written to tape, is there any type of encrypting that

One trick I use to connectivity between any client and the master or media
server is to perform the following from the server (either windows or unix
works):

bpgetconfig -s

or

bpgetconfig.exe -s

where is either a hostname (with the correct resolution) or IP
address. If it can perform this, then the necessary NetBackup components are
in place to perform a backup or restore to/from that client. The output
from that command should look something like:
