This is a lost cause so save yourself some work. There is no guarantee
that the last stream won't complete before an earlier stream and unless
you disallow retries completely, the task gets harder and harders.

What are you going to do if stream 1 starts, gets partially done, has a
tape error, and retries? What are you going to do if the last stream
finishes early? What are you going to do if the last stream dies
completely and can't finish?

The problem is much harder than it looks...

The product is Enterprise Vault.

It ain't cheap and isn't a hack. It's a serious archiving solution for
serious archiving problems.

Don't forget that you actually have 2 problems, not 1. You don't just
want to be able to archive the files. You probably want to be able to
get them back :-)

You are correct - this is not possible. In order to get multiple data
streams working, you'd have to walk the file system. The reason
FlashBackup goes as fast as it does because it does not walk the file
system.

You wouldn't get better performance by using more streams - you'll do
much better by optimizing the disk reads and the network transfers.
I've seen FlashBackup jobs top 60 MB/sec here.

If you're not using vault, I'm not sure anything else is available.
What are you hoping for in "more appropriate"?

Depends on what you're looking for.

If you have a pool dedicated for duplicataion, check the bpimagelist for
volumes in the correct pool.

If everything is in the same pool, look for the different copy numbers
in bpimagelist output. Each one will represent a separate copy.

[Veritas-bu] Yet another bpstart/bpend script question

2007-01-18 Thread Ellis, Jason
For Windows 2000 and NT clients the bpstart_notify and bpend_notify
scripts have the following environmental variables:

STREAM_NUMBER
STREAM_COUNT

STREAM_PID

I created a quick and dirty bpstart_notify script to try and capture
these, however I didn't get anything. How are these variables used?

I really need to capture the STREAM_NUMBER if possible to help mitigate
a job with multiple data streams. My idea is to use lock files to
prevent the bpstart_notify from running once one stream has already
started, and the bpend_notify script from kicking off until the last
stream has completed.

You might be able to create a script that dynamically builds the file
list based on access time of the file and then passes it via command
line to NetBackup. I used to work with a customer that had a similar
script in their environment that would dynamically build backup policies
on a nightly basis.

[Veritas-bu] FlashBackup and NEW_STREAM

2007-01-18 Thread Ellis, Jason
I'm testing FlashBackup to backup a large volume with millions of small
files at raw volume speeds with the ability to perform single file
restores. I know FlashBackup supports multiple data streams with
multiple devices, but is there a way to use the NEW_STREAM directive on
a single volume to get multiple data streams from one device (this is a
large LUN with multiple spindles so I'm not worried about head
thrashing). I'm getting about 18 MB/sec right now (a far cry from the 1
MB/sec without FlashBackup) and would like to get more speed if
possible, hence multiple data streams. I'm thinking that it is not
possible since I am technically accessing raw volume, not the file
system.

Thanks in advanced.

Ahh Windows...

The bpimagelist.exe exists (in C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin), so
you can ge the totals, but you will have to find another way to "awk" the
total column and add them up.

Alternatively you could install CYGWIN, and use the command as if you were

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Script for Daily Backup Totals

I have NBU 5.1 MP5 on Windows. I was curious if anyone had a script for
getting a daily backup total. I am using bpcatlist but it comes back with a
value like 2G, 400M, 760k. Is there a command that will return a value just
in kilobytes?

Thanks

Mike

Solaris 9 nb 5.0 mp6

Is there any easy way to move assigned media from one volume pool to
another? We have recreated our volume pools to meet new internal standards
but I have a bunch of tapes that cannot be moved because they are assigned.
The last time I talked to Symantec they said it was messy trying to move
tapes from one pool to another. Does anyone have a easy way to do this?

[Veritas-bu] Disk estimates for 5.1 to 6.0 upgrade

2007-01-18 Thread BeDour, Wayne

Our environment is HP-UX 11.11, Netbackup 5.1 MP3 backing up mostly HP
unix with some Sun and Windows backups. We are thinking about upgrading
to 6.0 sometime before the end of support for 5.1 happens in October
2007. With all the bad press for 6.0, we have been waiting until it
settled down. For those who have upgraded, what did you see as far as
additional disk needed (catalog size, log size, etc.)? I'm looking for
a rough guesstimate, our disk guys are also trying to plan ahead and are
asking for numbers now. Thanks in advance, any input will be
appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] Downgrade a netbackup Master/Media Server to netbackup media server

2007-01-18 Thread Ana Alltari

Hi all,

Here is the current situation.

2 Separate Netbackup v.6 Domains (one for each Site)
on each Site the config is as follows.
Only one Netbackup Master/Media server on win2k3 platform that performs
backup process for additional Win2k3 & Unix clients.

What i want to do is to create a centralize environmet for both sites.(on
site 1 new HW for Master Media is going to be installed).
here is the procedure:

Steps to do on Site1:
-Prepare the new master server
- Prepare the new media server
- Migrate the operational Master/Media server to the new Master & Media
server

Steps to do on Site 2:
- Migrate the Master/Media server (Master config) to the New Master Server
- Downgrade the Master/Media server to Media server.

the questions that arise are:
1- Is possible to downgrade a Netbackup v.6.0 Master/Media server to only a
Media Server?
2- Any pro & cons on the procedure for the centralized procedure?

Thanks in advance for the advices.
