[Veritas-bu] Tape Eject failures

2007-02-02 Thread Michael Winn
I'm unable to eject tapes from within Netbackup, version 6.0, MP4

The eject process ends with Completed with Errors / Eject Aborted / Status
Code 23 - A read operation from a socket failed.

However, when running a vault job, and ejecting the tape(s), it is
successful.

Any thoughts on this?

[Veritas-bu] Type 1 Error on Duplication Caused by Image Already Existing

2007-02-02 Thread JAJA (Jamie Jamison)
I've seen this error before on duplication jobs when I was running tests
and manually duplicated an existing image. But what would cause this to
happen with images that were automatically duplicated?

TCB1:duplicate.log.1_en

>failed batch dup: 03:12:51 INF - Duplicate of backup id
patches.zgi.com_1169867358 failed, the entity already exists (226).

Is this a catalog glitch I should worry about?

Thanks,

[Veritas-bu] Anyone running 5.1 on a Solaris 10 master?

2007-02-02 Thread Peters, Devon C
Go for Solaris 10, it's worth it.

We've been running 5.1 master servers with Solaris 10 for over a year,
and haven't had any issues with the OS (I definitely prefer it to
Solaris 8/9). One thing to keep in mind is that when installing 5.1GA,
don't try to start any processes until you either 1) apply MP2 or
greater, or 2) run inetconv -f.

Also, you should run /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/new_clients if you
want Solaris 10 to be a client OS option in the Java GUI.

I'm about to upgrade from 4.5 to 5.1 and it appears that as of MP2,
Solaris 10 is supported on a master running on Sparc processors, and
that MP6 fixed connection and Java GUI issues. Can anyone confirm this?

I've got a new V440 with Solaris 9 already loaded but I'm going to move
to 6.0 fairly soon and it would be easier to install Solaris 10 now. It
will be a single master /media server combo; I've got NDMP and Exchange
clients. (not currently using Vault).

Thoughts, recommendations?

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Ankur, it's really dangerous, so I said for to do this when
doesn't have backups being executed. And after change the volume pool you
need use the parameter assignbyid. As I mentioned in another e-mail I used
this some times to solve catalog issues.

I haven't, but if you have a lot of extra CPU compared to I/O, it sounds
like it should work. I wouldn't do it on a box that already had high
CPU utilization.

Good luck and let us know how it works.

I'm running NBU 6.0 MP3 on Windows 2K3. No change on the client side -
both are Windows 2K3, one a file server, one a Web Server. They've both
been at 2K3 for some time and I've done restores on both without the
error. Google turned this up, but it only applies to NBU 5.x and
restoring to different file systems.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/276828.htm

None of the conditions seem to match why I'm suddenly seeing this. In
the above example, I suspect one is because it was a shortcut. The
others, mostly image files and a few pdfs, not sure. Ideas why? Where
to look?

Thanks,

I'm toying with the idea of running zfs on my DSSU's. This way i can
compress the data to the dssu as it's being written thus decreasing the
amount of space needed for the dssu's.

It might not be the best flow
client -> NB Server -> DSSU write the data with zfs compression
zfs uncompress -> tape

I'm wondering if anyone has done it.

[Veritas-bu] Vendor Support for Daylight Savings Time

2007-02-02 Thread peterschmidt
A few weeks ago, there were a handful of notes on the upcoming Daylight
Savings Time change and the solutions from different vendors.

Those notes indicated java patches, O/S patches, etc. and various
sources and procedures to obtain and install them.

My impression was that some vendors were either unaware or unsure of the
complete scope of the issue, and so I requested additional assurances.
The latest responses that I had received (from two of our vendors)
indicated that they were conducting a more thorough investigation, and
that results/procedures would be posted near late February. Given that
many environments are shared, either with other users or other
applications, the scope of the testing and the groups involved needs to
be broadened in order to insure compatibility with apps other than
backup software. Unfortunately, a late February announcement doesn't
leave a lot of time to put those changes through our testing and
implementation lifecycle.

I'm fairly certain some type of solution(s) will be published, but not
so certain that it will happen in a timely matter.

Has anyone else heard similar/dissimilar news? Is anyone else also
getting vague responses on the issue?

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU 6 MP4 Catalog Hot Backup

I had this problem or something very similar. You have corrupt images
most likely. There is a command, which I forget the name of, check
google/etc, it will go through all of your images on disk and move them to
an old/ or bad/ folder, once the crap images have been removed, the
catalog backup should run successfully.

I had the same problem, once I got rid of these images, it worked with no
problems.

server2.intersil.com

For Windows clients it gets added to the registry. You can do it through
the client's Backup,Archive and restore GUI. Go to "file" click on
"Specify NBU machines and polices" the nedit server list. Add the FQDN
to the client. Stop and restart NBU client services.

I'm working on DNS authentication for my back end (versus huge hosts

refuse to work. NBU documentation says add the FQDN to your media
servers list, but isn't there a switch to turn off the client's DNS Nazi
tendencies? Fair enough I could just add the entries to the hosts files
or add the FQDNs to the servers list, but this works on 50 other servers
including several fresh server installs. ?!

Re: [Veritas-bu] NB 6.0 & Aptare

2007-02-02 Thread ckstehman
We have been using Aptare for about 5 years now and it has worked very
well. Their support is excellent.
I agree, that even with NOM, we will want to keep Aptare for historical
purposes.

We use Aptare for our SOX reports. Without it collecting that information
would be very painful.

Yup - works like a charm. I have used Aptare's Storage Console software
for several years and have absolutely no reason to migrate to a "free"
NOM. I don't see NOM being a full-fledged reporting packages - that's
the *extremely* expensive Backup Reporter, but more of an "operations
manager" which is, after all, it's title. You'll have some operational
control with NOM that you won't have with Storage Console (e.g. down and
up tape drives) but you'll give up reporting functionality to get it.
Nothing, of course, stops you from running both. NOM is free so go
ahead and try it out. Don't forget that it does require a separate
server though - don't even think about it installing it on your master
server.

I've heard that NOM had a lot of bugs in its early releases, and it's
only been out since 6.0. With MP4, it's actually supposed to work.
Storage Console has a long track record and I trust it to keep my
history intact.

2007-02-02 Thread WEAVER, Simon

Hi
Are you licensed to backup Exchange? Look for a Key on your Master Server -
It will enable the exchange add-in component.

Also, in case I overlooked it, what is your NBU environment? 5.1, 6.0 ? I
think its "likely" that NBU may not "fully" support Exchange 2007, as its a
brand new piece of software - unless v6.0 MP4 does the job?

May find other products, like BackupExec may also not support it yet!

Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrading our Exchange Cluster from Win 2000 to Win2003

2007-02-02 Thread WEAVER, Simon

Just to add to my comments, if you are performing a "rolling" upgrade from
Win2k to Win2k3, the cluster should also get updated at the same time.
There is a process to follow in order to upgrade the last node of your
cluster, but I would have thought your Admins would have prepared for this
(ie: check list, documentation, research, ect).

How Exchange will behave, remains to be seen (hence why I stressed you cover
yourself!)

The key thing here, is that if you have a latest MP on your client, then
your Master needs the same - as the latest MP will contain updates that your
earlier MP will possibly not know about!

What you should be doing is ensuring you are in a prime position to recover
BOTH nodes at its current setup, BEFORE any upgrade takes place (either from
a backup, flash image, drive image, ect) so you can rollback.

This way, your protecting yourself, as well as NetBackup, should the upgrade
go wrong.

But as a rule. updates should be...

MP on Master

MP on Media Servers

MP on Clients

If you keep the same NBU Client on both nodes, it should work, and when both
are completed, you can then upgrade your environment to MP5 or later (think
6 is out now!).

Veritas should support all versions of Windows providing its a client that
can be backed up with the current version of NBU with the corresponding MP.

As for "while its failing over" - possibly. you know, if I was in your

something goes horribly wrong.

recover BOTH nodes at its current setup, BEFORE any upgrade takes place
(either from a backup, flash image, drive image, ect) so you can
rollback.

This way, your protecting yourself, as well as NetBackup, should the
upgrade go wrong.

But as a rule. updates should be...

MP on Master

MP on Media Servers

MP on Clients

If you keep the same NBU Client on both nodes, it should work, and when
both are completed, you can then upgrade your environment to MP5 or
later (think 6 is out now!).

HTH a bit !

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Upgrading our Exchange Cluster from Win
2000 to Win2003

The exchange team are upgrading there servers from Windows 2000
to Windows 2003.

During the upgrade process they are planning to have one node 1
at Windows 2000 and the other node at Windows 2003.

Netbackup is installed on the X:\ drive which is shared between
the clusters.

The version of Netbackup on each node is currently - 5.1 MP3

I have two questions from the Netbackup point of view:

Question 1

Is it possible to have different version of Windows OS and still
perform Backups and restores, while failing over the package between the
nodes?

Question 2

Is it possible to have different versions of NB software on both
nodes e.g?

Windows 2000 5.1 MP3 Windows 2003
5.1 MP5

Kind Regards

2007-02-02 Thread WEAVER, Simon

The key thing here, is that if you have a latest MP on your client, then
your Master needs the same - as the latest MP will contain updates that your
earlier MP will possibly not know about!

What you should be doing is ensuring you are in a prime position to recover
BOTH nodes at its current setup, BEFORE any upgrade takes place (either from
