[Veritas-bu] EMM Service cannot start

2007-02-21 Thread Anas Kayal

Heres exactly what happened:

1. I received a new license key and entered it.
2. After that I was asked to restart NetBackup services (as usual)
3. I did bpdown and Netbackup hung.
4. I restarted the entire machine.

Now when I try to start NB console it opens the default page but when I
try accessing Activity Monitor is hangs for a while then tells me cannot
connect to Enterprise Media Manager.

System log returns a emm cannot initialize.

I recently upgraded from 5.1 MP5 to 6.0 MP4 and it was a smooth upgrade.
I removed the key that I recently added.

This is a critical problem and I already contacted my Symantec support.

Any ideas??

Did you use FQDN names when installing ICS? This is one of the reasons

I am pretty sure those files are NOT touch during backup time. Why we still
get ERR - inode change time ..?

How to fix it?

Thanks.

[Veritas-bu] Restore multiple SQL databases .... NB 5.1 MP4

2007-02-21 Thread Kennedy, Cameron
Looking for an opinion on the best (most efficient) way to restore 148
SQL databases that were backed up on a SQL2000 server and need to be
restored to a different server that has SQL2005 installed. The SQL2005
server has different path locations for the databases and it already has
some databases on it that can't be deleted (thus master DB cant be
erased).

I can use a move template to perform this operation successfully on
individual databases, but is there a way to script them without having
to touch the move template for each DB restore as this will indeed be
time consuming?

thanks in advance for any advice.

I agree with Justin, every time I have had an issue with EMM, it
turned out to be name resolution/route. I have multiple NICs in my
machines and backup over a dedicated connection. Issue occurred when
one server talked over 1 network and other server replied from
different. Not sure this is your issue, just my two cents

[Veritas-bu] DSSU w/60 MP3 and Auto-Staging/Low Water Mark

2007-02-21 Thread Brooks, Jason
I have a DSSU for my diffs that's set to have a 35% Low Water Mark (this
is on my Master, a Win 2k3 SP1 box). Periodically, I've been finding
that when jobs run, the auto migration to tape isn't occurring when a
129 is encountered. For instance, I cam in this morning and saw our
main file server had reached about 35% complete and had been suspended
because of a 129 - Disk full. I waited until a catalog backup finished,
waited for a while to see if the DSSU would kick off, but it never did.

Suggestions of where to look for problems? Something corrected in MP4?

2007-02-21 Thread Koster, Phil
In the DSSU configurations there is a staging schedule. Check that
first. We have ours set to every hour because we were having similar
problems with our DSSU's. That corrected it for us.

There is also a command you can execute via Win Scheduled Tasks. I
forget exactly what it is right at the moment but I do remember it
wasn't obvious (not even in the manual).

Hope that helps.

[Veritas-bu] Unexpected sparse restore of AFS volume using differential-inc method

2007-02-21 Thread Lin Osborne
All,

We've recently moved our backup infrastructure from NB Ent. 5.0 MP6 driving
dispersed SunStor L9 DLT and LTO-1 units to NB Ent. 6.0 MP4 driving a single
Dell ML6000 (sibling of the ADIC, now Quantum, Scaler i500) LTO-3 library.

I'm now experiencing a problem where NB will restore only the most recent
differential-inc AFS volume image instead of cumulatively working up from the
last full backup through the most recent diff-inc (which based on doc is how I
understand diff-inc restores should work). All necessary tape volumes for the
full through most recent diff-inc are in the library but NB reports only needing
and only uses the single tape that contains the latest diff-inc image. As a
result, the restored AFS volume is sparse; only the files that changed actually
exist. There are referents to the unchanged files, so the names of all other
files are visible, but they don't actually exist in the volume.

This problem didn't occur before the upgrade but I was not involved in
installing/configuring the previous system. I've poked around the new install
and compared with the old but still don't see anything obvious. Any ideas?

Thanks
Lin

Re: [Veritas-bu] Redhat or Fedora 2.6 kernel NB 5.1?

2007-02-21 Thread Cornely, David
This is what I've done to get it working on Fedora (I forget the exact
kernel version). Don't know if this will work for you but it's here if
you want to try.

1) Turned off SELinux because it was preventing some shared library
activity required by bpcd. You have the option of running Security
Enhanced Linux on Fedora but it's very paranoid and makes it hard to do
a lot of things. So, we turned it off. Here's how:
-Edit the /etc/selinux/config file and set the SELINUX variable to
disabled
-Rebooted the server (required to have this change take effect)

2) Ran the iptables commands to allow NBU servers access but I used the
IP address of the master/media server instead of the hostname.

3) Then ran this to save the new iptables rules:
# /sbin/service iptables save

4) Restarted xinetd
/etc/init.d/xinetd restart

Then we could access the client via NBU.

The database is still running.
Are you sure you've completely shut down the database before running the
backup?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Redhat or Fedora 2.6 kernel NB 5.1?

2007-02-21 Thread Jeff Lightner
Well duh!

I had been there but clicked on the first link for the archives. I
guess I expected the link for the search would be at that first link -
it didn't occur to me it would be one line down on the original page.

Thanks.

By the way - is there a way to search the archives for keywords? The
page I went to just gives me the archives by month so I have to open
each one and even then I can only search on the thread titles.

The html page mentioned at the bottom of this message should have links
both to the archives that you see and the search form.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Redhat or Fedora 2.6 kernel NB 5.1?

2007-02-21 Thread Jeff Lightner
Thanks.

Yep - I disabled SELinux during the OS install though I will mention
that FC6 has a nice little config tool for SELinux now that might
actually make me consider using it for something with less time
pressure.

I had worked it out before you wrote. The main problem I found is that
for whatever reasons FC5 and FC6 (and maybe FC4 - I haven't looked at
that yet) don't install xinetd by default! When I did the client
software install NBU apparently checked for xinetd and not finding it
assumed it was running inetd (it wasn't) so just created an inetd.conf
with what it wanted. (To me that sounds a little brain dead but
considering the answer to my second question who am I to talk? :-( )

Anyway based on the realization it didn't have xinetd I did the
following to get it going:

Doing yum install xinetd got me the correct xinetd stuff binary.

Running /etc/init.d/xinetd start got it running.

Reinstalled the NBU client and it created the appropriate files under
/etc/xinetd.d

Started a test backup which was sitting at connecting until it dawned
on me I hadn't updated iptables (firewall) for NBU. I ran
/etc/init.d/iptables stop to turn off iptables since it's an internal
box. I'll probably go ahead and do firewall setup for it later since
I'd already worked that out for some external boxes running earlier
versions of RedHat but for now it's running the backup so I'll leave it
alone.

By the way for anyone reading it in the archives - if you decide not to
use iptables and Veritas firewall setup make sure you use chkconfig to
disable the automatic start of iptables on reboots.

Before anyone says it - I know none of the 2.6 kernels for RH/FC are in
the compatibility matrix.

My question is despite the above has anyone got it successfully working
on either Redhat or Fedora Core version 4 or higher with the 2.6 kernel?

If so would you be willing to share how you got it going or at least the
xinetd changes you made for it?

It seems I saw a thread about this some time ago but I can't find it in
the archives.

They are too. We've been backing up RHEL 4 for a long time...
