Re: [Veritas-bu] Slow catalog backup
Sorry 5.1 MP6 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Clooney, David Sent: 01 June 2007 12:34 To: VERITAS-BU@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: [Veritas-bu] Slow catalog backup Hi All Scenario Master server Solaris 8 64 bit We recently moved out catalog from local disk to SAN attached LUN, since then the catalog backup is taking hours compared to what is used to. We decided to take a copy of the catalog within a NBU policy to see the results, as this would make full use of bptm and use the NBU buffer setting config. The backup flew through fine confirming our SAN infrastructure is sound. I have tailed the bpbkar log when a catalog is running and it literally chugs along, it seems as though the buffer it is filling is tiny as the amount of data before pausing is tiny. Does anyone have any suggestions or could point me in the right direction? I get the feeling that this might be OS related somewhere as we have another identical production system that also had its catalog moved to a LUN and we have no issues what so ever with it? Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup SAP backup script
Whenever you execute a command within a script, it's usually best to specify the complete path to the executable you want to run, so there is no ambiguity. ie, if you want to run /opt/myscript/bin/test, rather than /usr/bin/test, then be specific. I've come across the following problem: - When initiating a backup it fails with error 29 (failed trying to execute a command). - The script it calls is named: brarchive_svc.cmd (brarchive being a command) - When you rename this script to test.cmd it works perfectly. Has anyone come across a similar problem, where the script name contains a command? Monique, is this on a PC? It _used_ to be (past tense since I just tested this and it no longer works this way on XP PC, at least) that the shell in DOS and DOS-based Windows releases didn't pay attention to the filename extension. Whether you typed foo or foo.bat, the current directory, then the PATH, were searched for foo.com, foo.exe and foo.bat in that order, so typing foo.bat would execute foo.com if foo.com were present. Maybe that's all changed now, but I still avoid giving an OS or shell more than one piece of code with the same basename regardless of extension. In your case, maybe there's something else also doing the command interpreting. Printing out the environment from your test.cmd might show who called it. If this really is your issue, and you're wedded to brarchive* naming, setting up an explicit search path in the order you want things found might be useful. ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu La version française suit le texte anglais. [Veritas-bu] Upgrade Strategies (fwd)
Our Solaris 9 Master Server is running NB_5.1 MP6 on a V480. What I want to do is to bring up Solaris 10 on a T2000, install NB_5.1 MP6 then upgrade to NB_6.0MP4. I heard that it would be better to upgrade Netbackup on the existing server then transfer to the T2000, but there is not enough disk on the current computer for NB 6.0. Bringing up a new server with NB_5.1 also leaves a fall back plan in-case the upgrade fails. I can switch back to the V480. I am thinking about adding new media pools and have the new server back up new tapes so the old master catalog will stay synchronized if I have to go back. Why is it better to upgrade Netbackup before migrating to the new platform? Thanks Carl Mathews University of Arkansas -- Forwarded message -- Ed Wilts ewilts at ewilts.org Tue May 29 22:00:45 CDT 2007 The general rule of thumb is to always do as few changes as possible to minimize the risk of things going seriously wrong. As long as 5.1MP6 is supported on RHEL 2.1 (I assumed you've checked - I haven't), you're taking the right approach by upgrading to 5.1MP6 first. Once you have that upgrade complete, let it stabilize for a while then build up your new system. There's really no catalog migration - you can rsync the /usr/openv tree to the RHEL 4 system - shut down the RHEL 2.1 system, change the RHEL 4 system host name back to what the original system name was, and then re-run the device configuration setup. Don't try and change names on your master during your migration - that will just get you in trouble. .../Ed -- Ed Wilts, RHCE, BCFP mailto:ewilts at ewilts.org ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

Re: [Veritas-bu] Help! Lost access to administrative commands.
Get you last good catalog backup and do a restore, then make sure you don't fiddle with the Authorization section of the NBU without first reading and making sure you truly understand what the is going on. It appears you have successfully restricted everyone from the administrative feature. In that your jobs are failing, do the recovery (well documented in the Troubleshooting Guide) and get your data protected. Thanks, Rockey J. Reed You're not obligated to win.
