I read on Byte & Switch today that CommVault has 6,000 customers. That's
not too shabby.

I know that the University of Minnesota is one customers - they've been a
NetBackup customer and although they're keeping it around (for now/for a
while), all of their new backups are being deployed on CommVault.

Re: [Veritas-bu] [ORACLE] Policy Naming ... Best Practices ?

2007-06-15 Thread Curtis Preston
I hardly consider what Stephen did to be shilling. He's a long-time
contributor to the list with hundreds of posts to his credit. He's
obviously not happy with how NBU handles this particular area of
functionality and decided to move to CommVault because of it.

The list is a NBU list, but if someone who knows NBU well thinks that a
given customer's problem would best be solved by investigating another
product, then I don't see why they can't mention it. For example,
someone else recommended looking into Illuminator, which is a 3rd party
reporting product, and didn't recommend Veritas Backup Reporter. If
he/she truly felt it was a better product for them, then they should be
allowed to mention it. Now, if we find someone from the competitor
posting on here just to mention their product, then let's get the
guillotine.

As to CommVault being a product "no one has ever heard of," many people
consider it to be the "#4" of the "Big 3." They're not a perfect
product, and I actually disagree that it doesn't need a third-party
reporting product, but, they're definitely innovating in some areas,
especially that of Windows-oriented backups. As for me, I've told them
I'm not interested until they offer a server that runs on Unix/Linux.

Why not re-import the tape back into Netbackup and then remove the
images from the catalog when it's complete. I know this is probably the

So it's not in the VM database. I wonder if you could create a volume
with that name via 'vmadd'. Then try to expire it at that point (and if
it works, follow up with a 'vmdelete').

Hi Carl,

We are an all Windows shop so it may (or may not) be related to Win2k3
server. I have a feeling that issue I was seeing (and the one you seem to
be seeing as well) is stemming from an issue somewhere between the NBU Job
Details and the point where Aptare gathers that info FROM NBU. The odd
thing is , it?s happening to only 1 client. I would have expected to see
it from a lot more. This client isn?t even unique. It has 160GB of
storage with about 700,000 files, no big deal. I have many more clients
with similar specs that are reporting just fine.

I hold 90days worth of NBU info so Support thought it may have been the
large amount of data I have that needs to be pulled into Aptare. So when
I was working with support, they had me replace the bpdbjobs.exe with a
replacement that would knock that info down to 24hrs. Well, they gave me a
replacement file that was for Unix not windows so obviously when the jobs
ran again, errors started appearing (the 0 Bytes and NULL values). After
trying again with no success, I reverted back the bpdpbjobs and associated
files and things were normal for a few days; even the one client that was
reporting the wrong amount of data seemed to be cured. Then I upgraded
(thinking this might help stabilize things) and the 0 / NULL values for
the JOBIDs started to occur again. I have a feeling that there was some
resident evil lurking, and when I upgraded and restarted the services, it
appeared again.

Support was very quick to respond to my request yesterday and I have some
good techs working on the issue. It looks like the issue of 0 or NULL
valued JOBIDs has stopped and it looks like it appeared only after the
upgrade and my restarting the Aptare and Oracle services. Unfortunately,
my Aptare database is filled with these bogus jobs so Support wrote a sql
script to run in Oracle that will remove them from the database so my
reports and dashboards don?t look like a sea of red. With my second go of
Support, I have received some superior help and advice. I truly applaud
their efforts in trying to help solve my issue.

So far, the upgrade has been fine after that initial issue. I?m still
monitoring it but will let you know if I see any other issues or benefits.

Hope that helps Carl.

Phil.

Philip

We recently upgraded to NBU6.0MP4. Aptare 5.2.06 continued to work fine.
About two weeks later
I upgraded Aptare to 6.0.14. Since that time I have noticed missing
MBytes information at times, and
missing and inconsistent File List and Stirage Unit information from the
Netbackup Job Detail drill down.
I am collecting from two master servers, one is Solaris, the other is
Windows 2003. Interestingly the missing
File List information is always from the Windows server, the Solaris
server is fine. I have not really
checked the MBytes for accuracy to any level of detail. I am working with
Aptare support on these issues.

I am thinking about upgrading to 6.0.19, but your experience raises
converns.

I am doing direct attached with the filers as their own storage units.
You can do this when you are using native fibre channel drives. The
policies point to the NDMP storage units. I have done 3 way in the past
and it works as well. The difference is the data goes across the network
for 3 way.

We need a bigger picture of your environment.

What kind of Sun systems are these? Maybe you've hit the limits of the system.

Do you have enough fiber channel bandwidth to the device host and tape drives?
Sounds like you might be hitting the upper limit of 2Gbit - especially if other
traffic is going on that link. Not sure if you are direct attaching the tape
drives to the host or if you have some kind of tape SAN switch infra.

If the data is coming from over the network client backups..maybe you have a
network bandwidth issue on the backup host. 170MB/sec though would already
indicate > Gbit so you'd have to be aggregating more than one link already if
that is the case. Add more.

Anyway, it could be lots of things. You just need to take a hard look at the
data path and everything along the way to find out the least common denominator.

Re: [Veritas-bu] BPCLNTCMD -HN truncates IP address

2007-06-15 Thread Weber, Philip
I'd never seen this before but funnily enough just tripped over it on a
couple of clients I'm moving from NBU 4.5MP9 master to 5.1MP6 master.
Both clients are W2K3 & remaining at 4.5MP9 for now (because I can't
access them to upgrade). bpclient -hn on the master fails to return the
IP address correctly. I can't tell yet whether upgrading the client
would improve. I suspect this is what's making the job run as 1 stream
as the master can't find out what filesystems exist on the client.

Unbelievable!!! What does the "Net" in NetBackup stand for? You'd have
thought it could resolve addresses!

Anyone know of a workaround or fix?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Aptare and NBU not reporting properly ...

2007-06-15 Thread Philip McDougal
Thanks for the info Ed.

Up until the recent incidents, Aptare was running great and making my life much
easier. I am running NBU 6.0MP4 for quite a while now so it wasn't like
anything changed. Just odd behavior that I think was exacerbated by the tech
giving me files for a Unix box instead of Windows.

Since I contacted them about the issue showing up again, they have been
steadfastly by my side (almost too much, I need to eat and sleep ;-) trying to
fix the issue.

I followed up with some more details to Carl's message but I'm feeling much
better about the issue today than I was yesterday. I love the product and this
is the only issue I've had so I'm confident that support will get it
straightened out permanently.

Thanks!
Phil.

I've been running 6.0.19 since it first came out and haven't seen this
issue. I've had other issues over the years but not this one. The weirdest
one we just resolved today but the root cause of it was a NetBackup bug that
caused jobs to try and run on the wrong master server and Aptare caught it
and ended up seeing one client with backup jobs from 2 master servers.
Yeah, no wonder we've never seen that before!

Contact Aptare support again and work with them to try and figure out what's
causing it. It could be related to the version of NetBackup you're running
(they behave differently if you're version 5 or 6 and sometimes NBU maint
paks screw them up).

I hope I can get the missing detail info corrected. I think it is causing
some other problems like occaisionally missing a failed backup.
So far they are stumped on my issue, but are working on it diligentlty,

Phil.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] BPCLNTCMD -HN truncates IP address

Yes bpclntcmd -hn hostname cuts off the last digit when issued from the
5.1MP6 Solaris 9 Master Server. I noticed it with MP6. NB_5.1MP6 clients
that I tested return the right IP address.

Has anyone ever seen BPCLNTCMD -HN truncate the IP address?

For instance, the IP in the hosts file is 10.10.10.100 and BPCLNTCMD
looks like this:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin >
./bpclntcmd -hn hostname host hostname: hostname at 10.10.10.10
(0xabcde0)
checkhname: aliases:

I have at least two boxes that this is happening on, first one is above,
the other is .200 and comes out as .20 in bpclntcmd, and of course they
are failing with a 54. The only correlation I can draw between these two
is that they were new additions to the existing hosts file. Other hosts
entries are fine and backups are successful.

This is a new Solaris 10 media server that is barely in production and
nsswitch.conf lists files first. NBU 5.1MP6. A quick internet search
turned up nothing. Any ideas?

[Veritas-bu] Looking for command to display NB Oracle Client Version ?

2007-06-15 Thread Wilkinson, Alex
Hi all,

Can anyone recommend the command (unix) to list the actual version of the
Oracle client component installed ? i.e. have we got mp4 installed for this
oracle client ? I know there is:

#bpgetconfig -g hostname.dsto.defence.gov.au -L
Client/Master = Media Host
NetBackup Client Platform = Solaris, Solaris8
NetBackup Client Protocol Level = 6.0.0.0.4.4
Product = NetBackup
Version Name = 6.0
Version Number = 60
NetBackup Installation Path = /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
Client OS/Release = SunOS 5.9
#

But this doesn't indicate to me if NB_ORA_60_4_M_285967.tar has been installed.
It just lists the "NetBackup Client Protocol Level". Which could or could not
include the oracle components ??
