[Veritas-bu] Silly question: NetBackup Remote Media Server License?

2007-06-26 Thread Ellis, Jason
What is a NetBackup Remote Media Server License and what is a NetBackup
Remote Media server? From the name I can guess that it is a Media server
that is not in the same physical location as the Master (i.e. across the
WAN). Am I close?

[Veritas-bu] NBU 5.1 media server catalog

2007-06-26 Thread Stump, Bob A
Dear fellow NetBackup laborers,

It's been awhile since I've participated in this forum, but I would like
some opinions on DR for a large enterprise environment that simply has
too many media servers to list all of them in bpsyncinfo.

I am proposing to do the following for backing up the catalog
information in NetBackup 5.x media servers:

1. Remove the file lists for the media servers from the bpsyncinfo.
2. Create a single standard NetBackup policy for all UNIX media servers
   /usr/openv/netbackup/db
   /usr/openv/volmgr/database
   /usr/openv/var
   /usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf
   /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf
   /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_*
   /usr/openv/netbackup/include_*
3. Create a single windows NetBackup policy for all window media servers
   C/Program Files/VERITAS/Netbackup/db
   C/Program Files/VERITAS/volmgr/database
   C/Program Files/VERITAS/var
4. Create a bpsyncinfo that would only include the master catalog files

This is kind of like the 2 tape system for backing up large catalogs as
described in the NetBackup Sys Admin Guide. I think this should be OK
because in a disaster scenario the master server will be bprecovered
first. Then, if the media servers are one of the master server's regular
backup clients then it would have all the information it needs to be
able to restore the catalog and special files to the media servers as
its clients.

That's probably more of a performance suggestion. The system won't fall
over if you have connectivity to more than that, just don't try to
stream them all.

If you use the wizard for setup, it will use the serial numbers on the
drive, and will know that the drives attached to the other machine are
in particular positions in the robot. No problem moving the tapes
there.

The master server doesn't need /dev/sg paths for the drives it's not
using. It just needs to tell the robot to put a tape in that slot.

[Veritas-bu] SAN Media server question

2007-06-26 Thread Dave Markham
Guys running Netbackup 5.0Mp7 on solaris 9 environment.

I have a master server connected to L700 via fibre through a SANBOX2
switch to robot and 6 drives.

The master server has 2 HBA's ( as i believe Sun impose a limit of 3 *
LTO2 drives per 2GB HBA ).

I have 2 SAN Media servers ( DB nodes ) each connected via the switch to
the first 3 drives which are shared.

I am adding 2 extra drives and another SAN Media server.

Question is :-

Using robtest i will see the extra drives in the L700 once added but i
cant add these drives to the Master server as i have already hit my
limit of drives / HBA. The new media server will be connected through
the switch to the 2 new drives and will have the devices set up. The
query i have is how does the master server ( which is the robot
controller ) able to put the tapes into the drives for use with the 3rd
Media server? As i wont have the devices and thus /dev/sg paths set up
for these new drives on the master. Im unclear as to how this will work.

Anyone any ideas? I cant see anything in the docs from the scan through
i have had

It will definitely apply compression algorithms, regardless of the
state of the data which is being backed up.

Thanks, Jeff.

My assumption was the same. I didn't think that NetBackup would bother
to perform any checks to see if a file was already encrypted.

My question was prompted from one of my clients. I don't have any way
of knowing if any of my backup clients are encrypting their disk
filesystems
or partitions. I certainly hope my clients haven't purchased a
NetBackup
encryption license knowing their systems were already encrypting data.
