Kevin
Expect alot of problems with this. I am sure young Ed Wilts advised this is
not supported and with 2 mixes of version of NBU 6.5, its not going to
be alot of fun.

Maybe just import the tapes you need, as and when required?

While this is a really good tool, it is NOT freeware. If you want to

Re: [Veritas-bu] Reclaiming tapes to the scratch volume pool

2007-12-05 Thread Rosenkoetter, Gabriel
That's possible but unlikely. The most frequent circumstance in which I
see tapes not being returned to the scratch pool when their images are
expired is when they were assigned as Vault duplicates for a Vault
profile that is later removed. If that Vault profile doesn't rerun
later, they won't be reclaimed properly under NBU 5.

(It "shouldn't" happen if the images were copy 1 or a regular
bpduplicate, but I don't think it's inherent evidence of catalog
corruption.)

Thanks guys. We're using NBU 5.1 on unix. You are right that this
version doesn't move the tapes automatically (yet another reason to be
excited about our future move to 6.0 next year). I was able to finally
figure out using vmquery with -deassignbyid, which moved them to the
scratch pool once I did it. Thanks for the script, Gabriel. That could
be a definite timesaver once I read through it and get it working!

I use the attached for this.

It does exactly what you describe (walking through all media in
robotic control or taking a list of media on the command line).

The step you're missing is vmquery -deassignbyid. Otherwise,
you've got the right steps.

It depends on the version of NetBackup. Older versions won't
move the tapes to the scratch pool automatically whereas the newer
versions do. What version of NBU are you running? Windows or Unix?

To manually move the tapes, look for an assigned date of
"00/00/"

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Reclaiming tapes to the scratch volume
pool

I've run into a problem where my scratch volume pool is empty.
However, I have tons of empty tapes (can easily list with Aptare) that
just happen to be assigned to other specific pools. I can manually run
bpimmedia on these empty tapes to verify that there are no images on
them. But if I try to change the volume group on them via the GUI to
scratch (or the Netbackup pool), I get the "cannot change volume pool
for assigned media (91)" error.

If there are no images on the tape, what's the problem? I
thought once images expired on tapes, they were supposed to
automatically be kicked back out to a scratch pool anyway. I've found a
few places where I can manually force a tape into a different volume,
but it is pretty strongly suggested that you *not* do it that way.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Merge 2 Master Servers

2007-12-05 Thread Cruice, Daniel (US - Glen Mills)
We just did the same thing, but fortunately for me the two different
sites had different media prefixes so I got lucky. The only issues we
ran into was getting the other site's library to intergrate
successfully, but it wasn't that big of a deal. If you are running
vault, you will need to configure another vault profile for the two
different sites if you plan to continue to utilize the other site's
robotic / drives etc. The only down fall to this is you will need to
manually change the current profile session to run vault on siteA's
robotics / siteB's robotics. And again I was lucky enough that the
other site was a BCP site we were actually able to rebuild their NBU
servers from fresh. If you have that ability you should be in good
shape.

If not, you are going to have some fun importing tapes for restores for
the site you are bringing in. I don't know if there is a way to merge
both catalogs into one.

Thanks

[Veritas-bu] Multiple jobs going to an incomplete status

2007-12-05 Thread Cruice, Daniel (US - Glen Mills)
NBU environment:

Totally Windows 2003 Ent all media servers have 4 gig of ram

Fiber NICs (NC6136)

NBU 6.0 MP4

Am running into an issue where I am getting a large number of
"incomplete" jobs. And they all seem to be from a single media server.
I have gone thru three different Symantec Techs and am not any closer to
resolution and am getting quite frustrated.

So I reach out to the real experts. Seems I can run fine up to about 60
jobs at the same time, right around this threshold is when jobs start to
go to an incomplete status almost every error code is a "25". We tried
to decrease the TcpTimedWaitDelay from 240 seconds to 30 seconds in the
Windows Reg...still no worky. Tried upgrading the NIC drives to the
most current, still not working. Nothing has changed to NBU
environment, however I do not know about the Networking environment.
But will be reaching out to those guys as well.

Anyone seen this and does anyone have any suggestions.

We have a similar situation, and considered merging two masters. However
we ruled that out because of the complexity of
the tape libraries and tapes, and the backup catalog.. In our situation
we have two geographical locations, one is Solaris, the
other Windows.

I can be done, but it is strongly suggested that Symantec Netbackup
consulting be hired to assist.

It is non=trivial.

How long does it take to erase the tapes in question ?

Did you background your "erase_media.pl" script called by

Also, I might suggest put a sleep in the perl script for to allow netbackup to finish performing it's thing before
you go erasing the tape.

My thoughts.

amount of multiplexing that I do, so I have to quick erase the tapes as
they are deassigned.

When I upgraded to 6.5, I saw the
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/media_deassign_notify script, and figured I
could just throw my bplabel command within this. Well, the first issue
I ran into was that NB is not passing the correct # of parameters to the
script. Well, after I got around that, I needed more than the media id
to run bplabel, so I wrote a perl script.

Well, when I run the perl script by hand, it works great! When I run it
under the media_deassign_notify it reflects the correct options on the
bplabel command but it freezes vmd. What do I mean? I mean it I can
not select any tapes and I can not kill the erase job on the activity
screen. I have to do a UNIX kill to get rid of it.

Below is what I wrote, but my question is does anybody else already do
this? If so, I would appreciate any direction on what I have done
wrong.

This is the line I added in the media_deassign_notify:

/usr/openv/scripts/erase_media.pl $1

Here is the perl script:

#!/usr/bin/perl
#
# This script was created, because the CDL does not release space
already allocated.  So
# when a virtual tape is used on the CDL and uses 200GB, it does not
release that space after
# the tape is unassigned. This is being called by
media_deassign_notify
#
#
open (LOG,">/tmp/erase_media.log") || die("can not open file");
$#rv=-1;
@rv = (split ' ', `/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmquery -l -m $ARGV[0]
|/usr/xpg4/bin/awk '{print \$1,\$8,\$12,\$15,\$20,\$21}'`);
# ###
# check to see if it NOT robot 3 (physical robot), and the assign date
is empty, and the # of mounts is greater than 0
# ###
if ($rv[1] != "3" && $rv[1] gt -1 && $rv[4] == "00/00/" && $rv[3] gt
0) {
   print LOG "Erasing " . $rv[0] . " Pool " . $rv[2] . "\n";
   system `/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bplabel -erase -m $rv[0] -d
hcart2 -o -p $rv[2]`;
} else {
   print LOG "Not Erasing " . $rv[0] . " Pool " . $rv[2] . " Robot "
. $rv[1] . " Date " . $rv[4] . " Mounts " . $rv[3] . "\n";
}
close(LOG);

Re: [Veritas-bu] Reclaiming tapes to the scratch volume pool

2007-12-05 Thread bobbyrjw
In 4.5, 5.0, and 5.1, if the tape started in the pool designated as the
"scratch pool", then it will automatically go back when it expires.

The pool has to be designated as the scrach pool.

When you need a tape, 4.5-5.1 will pull a tape from the scratch pool and use it.

Bobby.

Thanks guys. We're using NBU 5.1 on unix. You are right that this version
doesn't move the tapes automatically (yet another reason to be excited about
our future move to 6.0 next year). I was able to finally figure out using
vmquery with -deassignbyid, which moved them to the scratch pool once I did it.
 Thanks for the script, Gabriel. That could be a definite timesaver once I
read through it and get it working!

I use the attached for this.

It does exactly what you describe (walking through all media in robotic control
or taking a list of media on the command line).

The step you're missing is vmquery -deassignbyid. Otherwise, you've got the
right steps.

It depends on the version of NetBackup. Older versions won't move the tapes to
the scratch pool automatically whereas the newer versions do. What version of
NBU are you running? Windows or Unix?

To manually move the tapes, look for an assigned date of "00/00/"

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Reclaiming tapes to the scratch volume pool

I've run into a problem where my scratch volume pool is empty. However, I have
tons of empty tapes (can easily list with Aptare) that just happen to be
assigned to other specific pools. I can manually run bpimmedia on these empty
tapes to verify that there are no images on them. But if I try to change the
volume group on them via the GUI to scratch (or the Netbackup pool), I get the
"cannot change volume pool for assigned media (91)" error.

If there are no images on the tape, what's the problem? I thought once images
expired on tapes, they were supposed to automatically be kicked back out to a
scratch pool anyway. I've found a few places where I can manually force a tape
into a different volume, but it is pretty strongly suggested that you *not* do
it that way.

Any suggestions?--- Begin Message ---

Why not just run the tool, and then if something looks to be wrong, call
