Re: [Veritas-bu] Any one upgrade to Veritas Netbackup 6.5.2 yet?

2008-06-17 Thread Martin, Jonathan
I posted this two weeks ago. I'm still working with Symantec tech support.

https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=21&thread.id=44727

So far I've:

Upgraded Netbackup to 6.5.2
Upgraded the Virtual Center to 2.5 Update 1

The only change so far is that before the updates the files wouldn't remove
themselves from the mount point but now they do.

the host dies and you restore the EFS-encrypted files back to the host,
what happens? Will they still be readable, or?

Patchrm'ing it and installing 125081-08 and rebooting -- -r fixed the

To give a little more info, I'm doing this step by step:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/266501.htm

Maybe I have the wrong max targets and max luns setting?

I'm assuming that since the tape drives are at c4t2d1 and c5t4d0 I won't
need anything higher than 4 targets (t4) and 2 luns (d1), But I've tried
like 15 targets and 7 luns and a bunch of other junk, just to see if it
will catch.

Again, mt sees the drives, cfgadm sees them, but sgscan -v conf all
doesn't.

[Veritas-bu] Catalog restore tampered with by robot inventory

2008-06-17 Thread selwyn

I do not know for certain what the effect of running an inventory during a
catalog restore will be. I would think it has the potential to cause problems.

Information about the physical inventory is stored in the EMM database
beginning with Netbackup 6.0. If the EMM database was being written to while
the restore was taking place that would not bode well for the restore process.

[Veritas-bu] RESOLVED: Each stream uses different tape for RMAN 1-channel backup

2008-06-17 Thread Bryan S. Leaman
I finally resolved this issue and the cause was something I never would
have suspected. It turned out that my tape drives were flagged as
"needs cleaning", which apparently causes NBU to unload a tape
immediately after a stream is written and ignore any type of normal
unmount waiting period. I reset the mount time on my drives to clear
the flag, and suddenly the same backup job used one tape.

I need to give credit to the folks on the Symantec forum for the solution:

Re: [Veritas-bu] Media Tracking -

2008-06-17 Thread Sanda Smith

We've used Vertices with the Netbackup automation agent for about 6 months now.
We only have around 6000 media. Overall we've been happy with the product.
It was very helpful to have at audit time. The company is responsive and the
problems we've encountered have been fixed quickly. We did some custom post
processing and simple bat scripts to further automate things to meet our needs.
I'm hopeful the new web version will reduce some of the customization needs
but we haven't started playing with that version yet.

This thread is to get a feeling of what others are using for tracking their
media. We have around 30,000 media and we don't have a tracking system built
in. We depend on Netbackup and some other tools, but no tool is complete now.
Are people using any off the shelf tools such as Vertices or so? If so what are
the thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

[Veritas-bu] NB 5.1 mp7 scheduled jobs does not starts

2008-06-17 Thread comp_geek_gal

I don't know if your jobs ever went active or not. Typically if bpsched is not
scheduling jobs - something (obviously) caused it to stop responding.

Things that may be the cause:
1.CLIENT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT's being set to more then the default of 300
seconds (check the bp.conf file).
* If that is the root cause - grep the bpsched log for "timeout " (note
the space on the end - if you do not include a space in the search you will get
tons of queue timeout messages).

2. Insufficient message queue space.
* Check the bpsched log for messages about "suspending process", "queue
full" and "defer/undefer" messages. Those are indications that message queue
space is not adequate and should be increased. (this applies to Unix of course)

3. A corrupt bpsched.d worklist file. (in netbackup/bin/bpsched.d).
   * If you have checked for items 1 and 2 - then it's best to stop nbu, and
cleanup the worklist files in that directory and then restart (this includes
the drive worklist files).

Oh - and you can increase logging on the fly for bpsched for version 5.1 (not
sure which patch version this started at) - but run:
netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpschedreq -verbose #
   # is the verbosity level.

Hope that helps.

Hi Marion

Thanks for the above, that's the route I decided to go down as I feel
it's more elegant than hacking the netbackup scripts.

I needed to add these lines into sendmail.mc:

MASQUERADE_AS(mydomain.com)dnl
FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)dnl
FEATURE(masquerade_entire_domain)dnl
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(mydomain.com)dnl

Also I had to edit the solaris-generic.m4 file to remove the part which
exposes root's email as NetBackup will be sending it's emails from the
root account.

Cheers :)

Many of the notifications are generated by notify scripts that live
somewhere
under /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/. The originals are in the "goodies/"
subdir,
and are intended to be customized as needed. On Solaris, you would need
to
add "-r [EMAIL PROTECTED]" to the "mailx" command used to generate the message,
e.g. in mail_bp_reports.

> If not, can it be done with sendmail on Solaris? :)

That's a sendmail question, but you may be in need of enabling some form
of sender masquerading. On Solaris, look in /usr/lib/mail/README for some
flags you can set in /usr/lib/mail/cf/sendmail.mc and then regen
sendmail.cf
based on those settings.

Regards,

Marion
