[Veritas-bu] NDMP Issues on Sun Storage 7410 Unified Storage System

2009-04-15 Thread Martin, Jonathan
All,

I know there are many Sun aficionados on here and I just wanted to
mention that NDMP on the new Sun Unified platform is apparently broken.
Basically, some backups will work for a while via NDMP but the NDMP
daemon has some sort of memory leak which will eventually lead to error
99s and all backups failing. The work around so far appears to be
rebooting the storage device, but I haven't confirmed that quite yet.
My testing so far has been on the 7410 series, but I'm about to work on
the 7210 as well. Sun document on the issue is 6787737 and there is
currently no fix available. My SR# for reference is 70900716. If this
debacle is anything like the Sun StorageTek 5320 debacle I'm sure plenty
of frustrated admins are trying to troubleshoot this issue as we speak.
I'm just pissed off because I've spent another 2 weeks troubleshooting
ANOTHER Sun storage device that never should have made it past QA.

[Veritas-bu] /usr/openv on NFS

2009-04-15 Thread loadnabox

from a DR standpoint it would make more sense to keep the EMM database on a
local drive. It's a pretty lightweight SyBase back-end and locally attached
drives do fine. Do nightly Catalog backups and send the catalog backup to the
NAS.

While you say if the NAS goes down you've got bigger problems, I would argue
that you are compounding them by completely losing your catalog and having to
rebuild it by importing tapes (depending on the media type anywhere from an
hour to eight hours PER TAPE)

You don't want your master server dependent on other systems for the catalog
and you don't want you catalog backup dependent on your master server.

As a note, if you're going to use the disk for backups then duplicate off;

newer versions (6.5+ of netbackup can use SLP's (Storage Lifecycle Policies) to
manage disk space but only with the AdvancedDisk, BasicDisk doesn't allow you
to use SLP's

If you're running older versions of NB or you prefer vaulting this wouldn't
apply.

2009-04-15 Thread Donaldson, Mark
With unix "Permission Denied" is usually an NFS mount thing.

I'll bet you a nickle it's on an NFS mount and the permissions in the
export table on the NFS server aren't allowing root on the client to
function with full permissions in that mountpoint. (root=)

Review the logs or the job details in Activity Monitor.

You dont mention what sort of client it is.

Usually, it could be due to locked file in use, and NetBackup was unable
to gain exclusive access to this.

Could also be a .tmp file that was locked.

Client Attributes properties apply to clients of currently selected master

General Tab
?Connect Options tab? on page 388
?Windows Open File Backup tab? on page 391

Figure 7-15 General tab of Client Attributes host properties dialog box
Allow client browse
The Allow client browse property allows all clients to browse files for
restoring. This attribute is overridden if the Browse and restore ability
on the General tab is set to Deny both for a particular client(s).
Allow client restore
The Allow client restore property allows all clients to restore files.
This attribute is overridden if the Browse and restore ability on the
General tab is set to Allow browse only or Deny both.

Access this window from NBU GUI on master -> Host Properties - Master
Servers. Select appropriate master and when it finishes clocking, right
click -> Properties -> Client Attributes.

Should be the same settings for Windows master.

[Veritas-bu] Restore Client on Red Hat Linux

I have been trying to perform a practice restore on a server running Red
Hat Linux, via the GUI provided with NBU, and I keep getting this error:

EXIT STATUS 135: client is not validated to perform the requested
operation.

I know NBU can see the server, because it writes the backups for it to
disk and eventually to tape. I updated the hosts tables on all machines,
just to be safe. I have tried to do the restore from the backup
server(Windows), but the GUI on that doesn?t show the directory structure
for any of the Linux servers, only the Windows servers. (I guess that
would be another problem I having!)

Does anyone have any suffestions/tips on getting the Restore to work, from
either GUI or even command-line?

When doing the restore from the GUI, and you say it does not show the
directory structure -

Are you meaning that in the BAR when you go to find the files you want
to restore it tells you it cannot find any backups?

Double check that in the screen where you pick your source server and
your destination server that the bottom pull down box says Standard (
this means unix) and now Windows-nt.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Restore Client on Red Hat Linux

2009-04-15 Thread Len Boyle
Good Morning James,

One thing you can check is to check the spelling of the client name on the
server and in the bp.conf file on the red hat client.
Make sure that they match including case.

If this is not the problem, check the netbackup logs on the server such as
bpbrm.
