[Veritas-bu] NB 6.5.3 slow response for administrative tasks

2009-05-28 Thread Kathryn Hemness
Greetings,

I'm having some performance issues with various administrative
tasks in NetBackup 6.5.3.1 on a new master server and fewer than
20 active backup policies.

My master server is a Dell PE2950 server with 16GB memory running
Redhat 4 update 7.

What I'm seeing is really poor response when adding or changing
backup policy specifications. Sometimes to update the backup
windows via the Admin console, it takes longer than 2 minutes - even
when there is no other activity.

I've also seen significant pauses when activating/deactivating
policies via the command line.

Are there system or database parameters that can be set to
optimize response? What worries me is that if I'm seeing this lousy
response on an unloaded master server, what will I see when it's
busy backing up a couple hundred clients?

[Veritas-bu] Tape drives not seen - fibre channel config

2009-05-28 Thread Jeff Cleverley

Greetings,

I know this isn't a specific Veritas question but I'm guessing someone
may have run into this problem while setting up a new installation.

I'm trying to get a new 6.5.3 installation ready for some testing on a
linux RHEL 4.5 server using a qlogic QLE2462 card. The tape libraries
are HP/Compac MSL6000 libraries with Ultrium 2 drives and the e1200-160
fibre bridges. For this test I'm using a Brocade 3800 silkworm.

The problem that I have is nothing past the robotic controller gets
recognized on one bridge. The robotic is lun 0, and then drives at lun
1 and lun 2.

Is there some lun mapping or instance type issues associated with linux
or any of the pieces I'm trying to put into place? The output of
/proc/scsi/qla2xxx/0 is below. You can see it sees both targets but
luns 0-2 on Id 0 say they are not registered for some reason. Lun 3 is
the robotic controller but the fibre bridge actually has the robot as
lun 0. I'm not sure why it shows up here as 3.

Any ideas why the system isn't seeing the drives on ID 0? The library

[Veritas-bu] MS SQL Restore

2009-05-28 Thread Randy Doering
Got a MS SQL user who needs a restore of MS SQL database from last night.

We've been doing these SQL backups and this is the first time a restore is
needed. It was already in place when I got here.

The user is in the SQL part of NBU (6.5.3) and kicks off  his restore request -
with the "start/end dates selected.

The process sits for a moment and then he gets: "ERROR Initializing NetBackup
Catalog. This could be caused by a missing or expired NetBackup license key".

I put a "MS SQL Server extension" license key on the media server that does the
backups, but the error is still there.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks,
Randy

Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrading NetBackup from 5.1 to 6.5.3

2009-05-28 Thread Rusty . Major
Be sure you follow the documentation, even though it's scattered through
several different docs. Most of the other stuff has been mentioned
already, but you also need to pay attention to supported patch levels and
hardware. If PBX is already installed, you need to make sure that's at the
proper version.

Though it's been said, make sure your catalog is squeaky clean by opening
a case with Symantec and running the NBCC tool until they say it's ok. And
build in time to complete a cold catalog backup when you're done.

Verify proper forward and reverse lookup operates properly. PBX is quite
dependent on proper reverse lookups. If you have multiple interfaces, this
becomes more of a challenge.

If you have a third party reporting product (Aptare, etc.) you'll need to
make some changes, contact the vendor. Any scripts you have may need to be
edited due to changes in command syntax and/or output.

Good luck, it's not a big deal as long as you prepared up front.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrading NetBackup from 5.1 to 6.5.3

2009-05-28 Thread ratheesh . das
You need to do consistency check using NBCC.
Netbackup services should be done before upgrading.

Please find the steps which I have performed.

1. Preparing your server for upgrade

a) Ensure that the server list defined on the master server doesn’t
contain any media servers that are not valid. If any invalid servers are
detected during upgrade, it can cause errors.

b) Ensure that there are no non active media servers assigned to
storage unit.

c) Ensure that there are no image, media or volume database
inconsistencies. The NBCC must be installed and run on the server before
upgrading to ensure that all the db information is consistent.

d) Deactivate all the policies before upgrade.

2. Summary of sequence to upgrade to 6.5

a) Ensure that the current version of NetBackup is having latest
Maintenance patch.
b) If the file /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/driver/snapctl10_x exists,
remove it.
c) Remove the current NetBackup server package using pkgrm VRTSnetbp.
d) Ensure that you have all the license keys before hand.
e) Go to the folder where you have the software for NetBackup server
and run the install script.
f) Since we don’t have PBX installed in our system, it will ask us to
install the corresponding package for PBX ie VRTSpbx.
g) During the activities it will ask us whether we want to start all
the daemons for NetBackup. Answer in affirmative.
h) Caution: Do not run nbpushdata this time.
i) Verify that all the NetBackup policies are still deactivated but
all NetBackup services should be running.
j) Suspend netbackup resource allocation before running the
nbpushdata command.
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbrbutil –suspend
k) Delete all the files in /usr/openv/netbackup/remote_versions.
l) Run the nbpushdata –add command. This command moves data from your
current database files into a newly created EMM Database.
m) Stop and restart the NetBackup services.
Thanks ,

Ratheesh

2009-05-28 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Steve
Essentially, I done an upgrade yesterday. It was not too bad - make sure
your NBCC -upgrade is absolutely clean before starting.

For me, I took an image backup of the Master Server, Full Catalog Backup
of Master / SAN Media Servers to disk and tape and then removed tape
from the library.

Made an "offline" copy of catalog to a completely seperate disk while
Services were down and Registry keys and license keys of all Master /
Media Servers.
Made sure I had the 5.1 Software and MP7 to hand (just in case I had to
revert).

Finally, check no backups are running during this phase.

My environment was all Windows and apart from one niggle problem to do
with ltid, I had to raise a call with Symantec to get this fixed.
Otherwise, its been ok.

Simon

As a database server, yes. As a file server, no. Lots of vxfs around here
but our FlashBackup work on vxfs has been on Solaris.

See
ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/279042.pdffor
the compatibility details. RHEL 5 didn't become supported until 6.5.4
which isn't due out for another few weeks.

Does anyone know what pricing and options I'll need for Storage Foundation?

If you're already used to a logical volume manager, then vxfs isn't that
bad. Stay up to date on patches though!

rsync + mfork. It sucks less than other options.

I just finished moving a 20TB application with about 150M files on it from
Ibrix file systems on Linux to a NetApp filer. We also moved other file
systems from xfs to NetApps containing another couple of hundred million
files.

Grab the latest (3.0.x) release of rsync, and pipe your rsync commands into
mfork for parallelism. Run as many streams as you can until the users
complain or you bury your network interfaces. I've done both :-). Do lots
of logging.

To efficiently move the data, you need to understand the data to determine
how best to parallelize the moves. You can't blindly move the data since
Murphy's law says (and we've validated) that you'll have 1 tree in the set
that will take forever to move, blocking all your other moves.

I have upgraded 2 remote production environments last week Friday (1
small environment (1 Master/Media) and a large one (clustered Master)).

On NetBackup side I did not see ANY issue. The only issue we have right
now is that our backup reporting software (none-NetBackup) does not
recognize the version of NetBackup so it cannot update. This issue
should be solved by the end of this week.

I plan to upgrade 2 other remote environments (1 large and 1 small) next
week and after another 2 weeks I will upgrade our 2 main environments (1
large (1 Master + 1 Media Server) and 1 very large one (clustered Master
+ 34 Media Servers))

We upgraded our production environment yesterday, so not exactly a
long-term test, yet, but so far, so good...

It *appears* to have addressed problems that we were seeing with nbpem
in all versions after 6.5.2GA, where it simply failed up run jobs :-(
The coming weekend will be an interesting test - we usually have some
6000 jobs, ~200TB of data to tape.
