[Veritas-bu] Media spanning job failures causing frozen media

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this - i'm seeing it on 2 or 3 of my 
environments...

When a backup spans media (and is the sole backup running to that media - i see 
this for NDMP jobs, and for some of my larger DB and Exchange clusters), but 
then fails on 2nd/3rd media... Netbackup marks the first tape as available 
again. Fair enough.  But NB also 'forgets' that that tape is currently sitting 
on the end of tape marker.  When it subsequently loads it for re-use, the tape 
reports a write error (because NB doesn't rewind it), and gets frozen.

I've included some truncated activity monitor logs below, to illustrate this in 
further detail, but just wanted to gauge if other people have experienced this, 
and whether theres some sort of work around short of make sure you've got 
enough tapes available.

Ran out of tapes... poor form, but fixable (we run a limited tape capacity per 
day, to allow for offsiting each day)

Huzzah!, someone else experiencing this...!

One of the guys I work with has had a ticket open with Symantec with this exact 
issue... Of course, they've been telling him till they're blue in the face that 
theres no problem.

Dont suppose Symantec gave you a bug track ID for this...?

I just had Symantec Support confirm that File List Exclusions broke at the 
6.5.6 level of code when backing up a MS Cluster via the Virtual Client Name. 

We currently have in each clients exclude list *.mdf, *.ndf and *.ldf to 
exclude all SQL database files. This would have gone un-noticed if it was not 
for our DBA who created some 1.8 TB of additional SQL databases on this specfic 
client of the cluster. The client was upgraded in the last month or two to the 
7.0 level. One day I happened to notice the the backup for this client was 
taking longer the normal to backup. I looked into it and noticed a ton of SQL 
Database files contained in the Windows based backups. Symantec did the 
troubleshooting on the issue and discovered that Client side exclude lists were 
OK at the 6.5.5 level of code but stopped to function when the client was 
upgraded to 6.5.6. I was able to confirm that a client at 7.0 and 7.0.1 level 
of code also had the problem.

@Scott - the bptestbpcd works fine

@WEAVER - nbconsole logs show nothing out of the ordinary and all names are 
correct - Since this is a master server we have not rebooted it lately.  I am 
trying to get one now, but it may tke a few days to get the downtime scheduled.

Have not heard from Symantec yet, but hoping today we will get some kind of 
answer or at least another direction.

It is really odd that it only affects the Master server in the Host Properties, 
but not in the client or media server properties.

Anyways thanks for everyone digging in and pointing me in different directions 
than were I was at..

Simon,

One very handy tool Symantec has recently published is NetBackup 
Domain Network Analyzer (NB DNA.) 

Download is:

It is delployed with 6.5.6, but can be used with 6.5.5. There is an 
additional patch you have to install with 6.5.5. I think the patch is a 
binary addition - you don't have to shutdown services to apply the patch. 
(I didn't anyway.)

The tool will give you a very detailed list of any name resolution 
problems. It will also list any network problems it finds when trying to 
initiate client connections. I'll be using it at least once a week to 
figure out what my network and firewall teams are doing to the backups.

Try logging into the client host from the master then run who am i or
who -r to see where it thinks you're coming from - sometimes it isn't
what you expect.   Also try the reverse.   This will validate
connections are being seen as the hostname you think they are.

@Len, we have checked everyplace we can think of for naming issues and
all that we have seen so far are correct.

@William, I am running both the jnbSA (from master) and the java windows
gui from my pc and neither work - and yes when i highlight the master
server it says connected - I can actually open up the master server
under the media server and client properties, just not under the master
server properties.

@Simon, i can run the bpgetconfig just fine from the master.

I have opened a case with Symantec since we upgraded to 6.5.5, so
hopefully they can help..

Find this part of the script.
You see where I put in comments of what I was doing.  
Then put in what I wanted.
Then commented that it was the end of my customization.

You can look at the other REM statements to see if there is any fancy stuff you 
want to use for testing.
I just added what I wanted and left the rest alone.

[Veritas-bu] Solaris Root File System Backup and restore.

(assuming root disk is dedicated for OS purpose).

BMR is already out of question.
