Re: [Veritas-bu] Right product

2010-11-15 Thread Dean
Simon

The SAN Media Server is now called Enterprise Client. Just like the
old SAN Media Server, it can back itself up to the SAN, but no other
clients. The tier is based on CPU type/number, as Johathon and Ed
mentioned.

And yes, SSO is still seperate - licensed per shared tape drive.

(I have been working with NBU for 10 years now, and have *always* had
to advise Veritas/Symantec sales people on how their own licensing
scheme works. I guess some things never change)

Cheers
Dean

2010-11-15 Thread judy_hinchcliffe
I use both.
I have line items for : NetBackup Windows Open Shared Storage
And items for: NetBackup Windows Server SAN Media Server

They are both things I had to order and get a license key to put into the
console.

(Now my SAN media server is just a media server that backs itself up - which is
why I wanted the SSO , I do not use Fiber Transport - that is yet another
license)

As for my keys - I have SSO key
And Remote Media server support keys

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup training

2010-11-15 Thread Nate Sanders
Our previous NBU admin left in March and we were still on NBU 5.1MP6 at
the time. In July I was given the chance to attend class for NBU 7.0 and
apply this to the 6.5 migration I was working on. By Aug I had
successfully completed a 5.1->6.5.6 upgrade. I highly recommend the
classes, especially in-person. The 7.0 class will still translate very
well to 6.5, as I use my 7.0 books weekly in our existing 6.5.6 environment.

The document is named "Licensing and Support Services" and your sales people
should be able to get their hands on it. It's for Symantec employees and

Im struggling really. I passed my NetBackup 6.5 Exam, but that was based
purely on working experience.

I could not do any training or work away from the job, due to
commitments.

Books I used was the manuals as well. No real choice like the Microsoft
type of exams.

Would be nice if I could have web training well in fact ANY training
I could do at home would be good. I am used to training manuals and
hands on, but dont have the time to go on a course.

I've been working through the web-based NBU 7.0 training (to fill in the
blanks before my cert exam). There's not much in there that doesn't
also apply to 6.5. By the time a new admin will get to the advanced
features of 7.0, you'll be there anyway.

BTW, unless you really don't like your new hire, don't subject him to
the web-based self-study Symantec course. That course needs to be
yanked from the curriculum - it's absolutely horrible. It consists of
an "English as a second language" speaker reading into a teleprompter
with slides you can't read unless you've got a >22' monitor at 1024x768
resolution.

SSO is still separate. From the "Licensing and Support Services"
guide:

NetBackup Shared Storage Option

NetBackup Shared Storage Option dynamically shares individual tape
drives, standalone or in a robotic tape library,
among multiple NetBackup Enterprise Servers and NDMP NAS systems. These
servers can be a NetBackup Master
Server, NetBackup Media Server, or NetBackup SAN Media Server.

NetBackup Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive,
regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or
number of NetBackup Servers attached to the SAN. The NetBackup Shared
Storage Option license is in addition to any
required NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive licenses. If the shared tape
drive is not included in a tape library, then only
a Share Storage Option license is required. The Shared Storage Option is
not needed when used with the NetBackup
