Re: [Veritas-bu] SLP ??

2011-01-12 Thread David Stanaway
I saw that, but is is to me a crude hack. Plus I loose the ability to
easily report and check compliance for systems. It doesn't help with
tape backups either.

My typical SLP is:

Backup to DD
  Dupe to Tape
Dupe to Alternate site DD

or for systems primary backed up to alternate site:

Backup to Alternate site DD
Dupe to Main site DD
  Dupe to Tape

Keeping track of multi-synths making sure they all completed and
duplicating the appropriate copy to tape is very easy to manage and
maintain with SLP.

What would be cool is if you could use the multi-synth capability in an
SLP like:

Backup to DD
  Dupe to Tape
Multi-synth backup to Alternate site DD from local images - with
Opt-Synth if storage supports it.

or for systems primary backed up to alternate site:

Backup to Alternate site DD
Multi-synth backup to Main site DD from local images - with Opt-Synth if
storage supports it.

  Dupe to Tape

SLP policies can be checked for compliance also.

I have a daily script that check for any incomplete SLP images and
sends backup admins a nastygram. It has not fired yet due to fast
opt dupe on out datadomains :).

My only gripes with SLP (and they may be addressed with an EEB or
with 7.1, I don't know) are:
SLP policies cannot be used for synthetic backups. They will look
like it works but none of the duplications run. Can you say dataloss?
SLP policies cannot be used for GRT backups (EG: Sharepoint
backups maded with GRT turned on).

Pranav,

SLP's enable you to duplicate backup images to multiple different
locations all the while ensuring that Netbackup retains full
visibility of the duplicated images wherever they end up
residing. In our environment, where we'd traditionally used Data
Domain's built in replication technology, Netbackup was aware of
the backup image but was not aware of the duplicate copy on our
replica data domain appliance. We still use Data Domain but
now, using SLP's, Netbackup is aware of both copies and all the
duplication jobs are visible inside the activity monitor. You
can also use the same SLP for multiple policies. You just point
your policy to it like you'd point it to storage unit and the SLP
does the rest.

I'm sure there are lots of other benefits but this is at least a
start.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Problem recovering data from set of 32 tapes

2011-01-12 Thread Martin, Jonathan
Is this during the phase I or phase II import? Have you even tried phase II
imports? You have to complete phase I imports of media, then phase II imports
of the images on those media before you can restore anything.

Up your logging to verbose on the master and check the bptm and bpdbm logs. I
cant recall which log, but I think there is a bptar or similar for restore
operations from tape.

If you can't get this to work, I've got a document (posted to this forum
previously) on how to use Linux and tar to extract images from a media manually.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Problem recovering data from set of 32 tapes

I bought a 2d hand Dell 132-T LTO3 robotic library for the express purpose of
archiving my tremendous collection of data. I was/am a field systems engineer
for several companies covering Desk, Laptop and server systems for about 1300
different pieces of hardware and one aspect of my job involved getting and
keeping a copy of every OS, App, Driver and Utility of the many different
hardware and systems. I started in 1986 with Novell, Apple, Windows 3.1 and
various flavors of Unix, CP/M, MP/M and a Myriad of software and tools used for
fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair on the many US military systems I
contracted service and maintenance for. Since then, I have accumulated around
200 5.25 360/720 and 1.2Mb Floppies, 500 750 and 1.44Mb 1.44 floppies, 200
WANGDat, DAT1,2,3 and 4, QIC, TraVan, Mammoth M2 and DLT70 tapes and about
25-30 HDD sizing from 20Mb(!) to 500Gb.

The majority of the stuff from way-back-then is likely junk... but I consider
it all priceless ;-)

The data from the 5.25 and 3.5 floppies was imaged to several hundred bootable,
self extracting, stand-alone file(s) using a product called DDC and I built a
mini SCSI tower for reading all my WANGDat, Dat4 QIC, TraVan, Mammoth and DLT
tapes. I started with a 13-tape 2-drive DLT unit, progressed to a 24-tape
4-drive DLT unit, bought a 32tape 4-drive DLT unit and then I simply ran out of
space... so I bought the 132T 19Tb unit thinking I could surely archive
everything on it - and add tapes as needed until I did.

Well,Using NetBackup 5.1, I managed to fill up 3/4 of that drives mix of 16
LTO2 and 7 LTO3 tapes and then my picker burned up. Thats the gizmo that runs
along a track, grabs the tapes and takes 'em to the reader, drive or mail-slot.
I was dead in the water. Well; it took 3 months, but I finally was able to buy
a 132T-shell from an outfit in Tx, pull the picker off it, and get mine 132T
working again.

Trouble is, I moved the whole sheband 2x during that time (home renovation)
lost the catalog somehow along the way and now cannot restore anything to the
new 2Tb drives I just installed in the server.

I followed all the suggestions found on the many forums and identified 2 faults
with the barcoding that weren't there before. Tapes BC 00203 and 00211 were
appearing as 0203L2 and 0211L2 and wouldn't inventory or import. The had also
somehow migrated to the NBpool...

As they were assigned, I couldn't just move them so deassigned and then moved
them to the correct pool (LTO2), then made 2 BC that reflected their Media ID
and after 4-5hrs of fooling around I finally got them to inventory, updated the
VM and now they show up in the Media List, but they still will not import.

The err I get is:

Error bptm(pid=452) ERR - Cannot add client black_beauty_2, policy
320Gb_Unknown and schedule Full to image database for import, error = a
protocol error has occurred, skipping.

Black_Beauty_2 is the NB master and Media Server

320Gb_Unknown is one of many external, temporary USB Drives I copied over to
tape - the policy still exists but is deactivated (one time shot)

I was saving a copy of the Catalog on the D: drive under 'BP_Backup' and it is
still there - or at least some files are but any attempt to access or read it
results in errors that no importable records were found in the specified
location.

What am I doing wrong? What am I missing? All the other 22 tapes import
flawlessly (although I still cannot restore anything)

Any ideas?

After I import all those tapes, and despite the errs on those 2 'L2' tapes
during that process, what do I do next?

FYI: I am using NB 5.1 on a 2k3 Standard OS Server Install

Thanks in advance ;-)

2011-01-12 Thread Martin, Jonathan

1) Copy ...\NetBackup\db\images\client from master to dr-master. (Alternately
restore catalog or import media)
2) Put media in DR library and inventory. (If using copy method above, move
media into non-scratch volume pool.)
3) Change bp.conf on dr client to match source client name (if restore client
has alternate name.)
4) Create No.Restrictions touch file.
5) Run RMAN restore script.

If your DR environment is in a different timezone, you have to account for that
when creating the RMAN script, i.e. if your source client is in New York and a
backup occurred at 9:00PM, and your restore client is in L.A., then you need to
configure the RMAN script to restore to 6:00PM.

Good luck!

Dear All,

I am sorry, I have another question.

I have a setup of unix NBU 6.5 with Oracle Data Base on Site-A.

Oracle Database Backup is performed with Netbackup Oracle Agent and the
Backup is written to DISK.

Now The same backup written on disk is moved to Site B where we have Unix
NBU 7.0. We are able to backup and restore the data on file Level. Here we
don't have Netbackup Oracle Agent.

Please advise how we can restore this backup without the Veritas Netbackup
Oracle Agent ?

Hi,

I have a problem seeing the changer and tape device on a Sun T5220 Solaris 10
server with 2 x QLC HBA's installed.

Ive logged the problem with Sun but they advise me to install to the latest
patch level etc etc which unfortunately at the moment I cannot do due to
downtime restrictions.

Storage have told me I should be see 1 changer and 2 tapes drives

Basically I can see the ADIC Array controller from sgscan as below:

/dev/sg/c0t0l0: Disk (/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0): SEAGATE ST914602SSUN146G
/dev/sg/c0t1l0: Disk (/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0): SEAGATE ST914602SSUN146G
/dev/sg/c0tw500308c0019178b2l0: Array-controller: ADICScalar i2000

However I should be seeing the changer and 2 tape drives.

Ive followed the notes from the admin guide (sg.install, sgbuild etc) to no
avail. I did see a thread on the same lines
(http://www.adsm.org/lists/html/Veritas-bu/2006-06/msg00065.html) which said
the LUN mapping was wrong so if anyone could assist it would be appreciated.

The days of physical tape's being attached are nearing an end I think
unfortunately.

Thanks...

I don't think you need to but you should. Every new NetBackup release
incorporates something different in the license keys. You should have
received and invite from Symantec to upgrade your keys and you should take
advantage of that. There's no charge to upgrade your keys to the current
version.

I would agree. Take note, for Solaris, you need to be at Solaris10 Update

Re: [Veritas-bu] Problem recovering data from set of 32 tapes

2011-01-12 Thread denverbound

Thanks for the reply Jonathan,

I get these errors during the import
media action when 'Catalog' is
selected from the left side window of the
GUI tree and Initiate Import is
selected from the topmost 'Action' pull
down.

It chugs away, reading and importing data one tape after another
and
finishes with the several errors I related earlier.. then when I
select
'Import' from the Rt side window, setting 'From' date back to
1/1/2008,
choosing All media and hit start it says INF - Found no images
matching
the selection criteria that were ready for phase 2 import.

I
have no idea why, and it's always copy 1 fragment 1 that either fails
to
load or already exists.

If I click the 'Results' tab I see a list of
~30 jpbimport operations most
saying that the 'initiation of Bpdm process
to phase 1 import was
successful', and others (4-5) saying that it wasn't
successful either due
to protocol error, or because no importable Netbackup
images were found in
import path or they already existed.

How can I
'forcibly' delete the corrupt catalog -assuming it is corrupt,
and rebuild
a brand new one... or can I?

Do the policies have to be active for import
to work? They're all there,
just 'dead' as most were one-offs (plug in the
HDD, create a ploicy for the
newly added drive(s) (F; - Z:) back up the
data from the new drive(s),
unplug the HD, disable policy) and do another
one. Do the policies even
have to be there??

I'm beginning to feel as
thoug a total rebuild of the server is in order -
and poss. upgrade to 6x
or 7.

The idea was to get the data from all these old and failing
floppies, dat
tapes and ancient HDD onto tape. Safely and securely onto
tape, but not so
I can't get it off again to put some of it on the new 2Tb
drive and play.

I'm talking OLD stuff ;-). TRS-80, Apple, Ohio
Scientific, Cromemco,
Arari, Ortona, Epson, Brother, GRiD, ARC, Mac II and
Mac Quadra, Findex,
Packard Bell, TCG, TI-99-4A, Sinclair, LNW_80,
Northstar, Wang, NCR,
Zenith, Compaq, Houston Instruments, Centronics,
Genicom, and on and on ..)

Any help appreciated, send the document or
share the URL ;-)

archiving my tremendous collection of data. I was/am a field systems
engineer for several companies covering Desk, Laptop and server systems for
about 1300 different pieces of hardware and one aspect of my job involved
getting and keeping a copy of every OS, App, Driver and Utility of the many
different hardware and systems. I started in 1986 with Novell, Apple,
Windows 3.1 and various flavors of Unix, CP/M, MP/M and a Myriad of
software and tools used for fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair on
the many US military systems I contracted service and maintenance for.
Since then, I have accumulated around 200 5.25 360/720 and 1.2Mb Floppies,
500 750 and 1.44Mb 1.44 floppies, 200 WANGDat, DAT1,2,3 and 4, QIC, TraVan,
Mammoth M2 and DLT70 tapes and about 25-30 HDD sizing from 20Mb(!) to
500Gb.

The majority of the stuff from way-back-then is likely junk...
but I consider it all priceless ;-)

The data from the 5.25 and 3.5
floppies was imaged to several hundred bootable, self extracting,
stand-alone file(s) using a product called DDC and I built a mini SCSI
tower for reading all my WANGDat, Dat4 QIC, TraVan, Mammoth and DLT tapes.
I started with a 13-tape 2-drive DLT unit, progressed to a 24-tape 4-drive
DLT unit, bought a 32tape 4-drive DLT unit and then I simply ran out of
space... so I bought the 132T 19Tb unit thinking I could surely archive
everything on it - and add tapes as needed until I did.

Well,Using
NetBackup 5.1, I managed to fill up 3/4 of that drives mix of 16 LTO2 and 7
LTO3 tapes and then my picker burned up. Thats the gizmo that runs along a
track, grabs the tapes and takes 'em to the reader, drive or mail-slot. I
was dead in the water. Well; it took 3 months, but I finally was able to
buy a 132T-shell from an outfit in Tx, pull the picker off it, and get mine
132T working again.

Trouble is, I moved the whole sheband 2x during that
time (home renovation) lost the catalog somehow along the way and now
cannot restore anything to the new 2Tb drives I just installed in the
server.

I followed all the suggestions found on the many forums and
identified 2 faults with the barcoding that weren't there before. Tapes BC
00203 and 00211 were appearing as 0203L2 and 0211L2 and wouldn't inventory
or import. The had also somehow migrated to the NBpool...

As they were
assigned, I couldn't just move them so deassigned and then moved them to
the correct pool (LTO2), then made 2 BC that reflected their Media ID and
after 4-5hrs of fooling around I finally got them to inventory, updated the
VM and now they show up in the Media List, but they still will not import.

The err I get is:

Error bptm(pid=452) ERR - Cannot add client

Yes, you should be able to type a name in and it should detect the OS

Check for the computer browser service on the client and also turn off
firewall for testing purpose. But can't we just type the server name in
the clients tab.

[Veritas-bu] setup special account for backup ????????

2011-01-12 Thread men duffy

we have several Redhat LINUX servers with BACKEXEC or Netbackup client in it.
everytime our Backup administrator setup backup always ask us to provide
root password for them to setup backup.

Does there has way we don't need provide root password and Backup
administrator still can setup backup?

My ideal are:

1. create a account with special group assign?

2. use sudo???

Thanks.

For NetBackup, get a copy of the Linux client install and put it on yourself.
Once you have a working client, the NetBackup administrators can push the
updates to make it match the master.

Re: [Veritas-bu] setup special account for backup ????????

2011-01-12 Thread Len Boyle
There are several thoughts.

If you can upgrade to 7.1 it will have linux install packages as a method of
installing the client.

If you have an account on the linux client that can write to /tmp you can
use the install method using sftp to write a directory in /tmp with all the
install scripts and the netbackup objects that are needed for the install.
After the bits are left in /tmp you can use sudo to shell the install script
in /tmp and it should install the netbackup bits.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Restoring a Oracle backup from production to DR netbackup

2011-01-12 Thread Len Boyle
You can have more than one bp.conf files on the client.
You can have one in the normal location of /usr/openv/netbackup/ for the std
unix install.
Or you can have one in the home directory of the Oracle userid used for the
Oracle instance.
Therefore you can have different bp.conf files for different Oracle instances.

Thanks Michael for the info ,

I will try this today and give you a feed back , I presume that bp.conf is
located on the oracle server ( I mean the client ).

 Hello Ibby

Firstly you will have to import the tapes with the DB backups on the
 DR master

Then do an alternate client DB restore, you will have to change the
client name in the bp.conf on the DR client to that of the production
 client

 Hope this helps

  Hello Everyone,

I need to restore a full oracle backup taken from the production site to
DR,here is how we have setup the  backup environment at production and DR.

production site: netbackup 6.0 installed on windows 2003 server attached to
a T24 tale library , production, DB, oracle 10g running on RHEL 4 , daily
  RMAN backups are taken.

DR site: Netbackup 7.0 installed on windows 2003 server ,attached to a T24
tape library.DR DB  ,oracle 10g running on RHEL 4.

I was hoping to to restore my DB backups from my production Netback onto
this DR Netbackup instance but I am not understanding how this is performed.

Has anyone experience this before and would be willing to give me some
  pointers.
I do not have any experience (yet) with restoring catalogs or hot backups.

I read in various forum and it seems this is a tricky one ,

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  Thank you in advance
