Thanks, but I was after some real world scenarios, as I had already found this
already.
Here is the problem I have..

I have many VM Guest machines that are Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 clusters. I
need to somehow create a script to ignore clusters and RDM.

Now, the RDM side, is ok - I have tested the query, but not put it into full
practice yet. The results say its worked, but I cannot just kick off the
backup, as it does not tell me how many it will do, and more so, 1000 VM's
being backed up right now isnt an idea time :)

My only other option, is to try and create a query against one VM Host I guess.
See if it works.
But ideally, was looking for examples of hte full use of VIP - In other
words... people that have lots of experience who may share some queries on what
can and cannot be done.
hope this explains a bit more :)
Simon

Hello Robin
The SQL Side is done using NetBackup for SQL (So its an online agent).
The Enterprise Vault backups are simply File level backups, no agents
involved here :(

I'm doing EV 10.0.3 backups through NBU 7.5.0.4

I use the directives and the database/app agent on my EV servers.

I'm not sure if you know about the safety copies that exist in EV, but
essentially EV won't remove the full-content email from Exchange until it gets
a full-content backup on both EV and Exchange.

With Exchange, it uses VSS. I'm not entirely sure what triggers with EV, but
file-level and database backups work.

Are you using the DB/APP agent on your EV server(s)? or are you just using
file-level? Also, how are you backing up your EV databases? Are they local or
point to an external sql server?

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup / Enterprise Vault 10 - Question / Query

Hi All

I am looking for some advice or assitance in regards to Enterprise Vault Email
Backups and NetBackup 7.5

Presently, I have been doing Full backups of all drive letters of the Server
(Windows 2008 R2) and Diff backups during the week (Based on the Enterprise
Vault details I found).

However, its been noticed that items are NOT being archived correctly. They
show a clock icon next to the emails and if you open the email it says This
item is being archived by Enterprise Vault do not copy, move or delete this
item.

However ,it has been like this for months, and the backups are being blamed :(

I downloaded the Symantec White Paper for Enterprise Vault. But before going
down this road, I wanted to find out how anyone else is backing up Enterprise
Vault for email.

Any input would be apprecaited.

Thanks, Simon

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup / Enterprise Vault 10 - Question / Query

2013-01-24 Thread Robin Small
Hi Simon,

There are some powershell commands that can set and release EV's backup mode.
Toward the tail end of EV's Admin Guide, it shows how to set release the
backup mode. The EV installation ISO has some pretty extensive documentation
(think about how much NetBackup has, EV is on par with NBU in that category).

The powershell stuff will put the EV volumes into read-only mode while backups
run so it'll minimize any stuck-open files.
I'm pretty sure that, at that point, a file-level will get it there if you set
it up to clear the archive bit on backup.

There's a link here:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=contentid=TECH172279
It's more database centric, but it does have some info on what to do.

FWIW, here are the bits on using the powershell cmdlets in backup scripts (from
the EV Admin's Guide):

%SystemRoot%\SysWow64\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell -psconsolefile
C:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault\EVShell.psc1 -command
{set-vaultstorebackupmode -name 'Express Vault Store Group' -evservername
EVserver -evobjecttype vaultstoregroup}

%SystemRoot%\SysWow64\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell -psconsolefile
C:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault\EVShell.psc1 -command
{clear-vaultstorebackupmode -name 'Express Vault Store Group' -evservername
EVserver -evobjecttype vaultstoregroup}
You should be able to put these in the bp start/stop notify scripts.

You'll need to work with your EV admins (assuming you're not the EV
administrator) to get the vault store group names (Express Vault Store Group
above), and EV environment details. All that is in the EV administrator console
on the server, but a lot of it is accessible only to the account that's the
specified EV Administrator (we use a service account here).

Hope that helps,
~ Robin
